"He really did a great job of mastering the fundamentals and the techniques of what it took to be an offensive lineman," Edsall, a former Syracuse quarterback, said of his development. "I think that's first and foremost. Then the second thing is his strength. He got stronger every year, and that has enabled him to be able to play at a better level. I still think moving forward, as I've said to a lot of people when they came through, he has tremendous upside. He's not one of those kids that is maxed out. You're going to be able to get a lot more out of him. If he can stay healthy, he can be a guy who can play 12-15 years in the National Football League and one who's going to be a credit to your locker room. "He's going to be a leader, he's going to do things the right way. You're never going to have to worry about him, and you're never going to have to worry, 'Is he doing what he's supposed to be doing? Is he going to be in shape? Is he going to be studying the playbook?' All of those things he's done and continues to do and continues to get better at." .... "He's going to come in and give it his very best to be a starter," Edsall said. "He'll work as hard as anybody. He'll take the time to master the playbook. He'll do exactly what the coaches down there want him to do in terms of what they want done within their scheme and the fundamentals and techniques. I wouldn't bet against him that he could come in there and win the job. I think it's also a situation where it's a good situation. If there's an opportunity for him to continue to develop and learn, I think that's only going to be that much better. But I know this. Whenever he's earned the right to step in and play, Matt's going to be ready to play." |
Eric, no way do you go to extremes.😁
And Thomas was considered top 5 before season too
How do you set up Edsall in a small time program? Give him a big program and wait.
And lord knows, there is an opportunity for them to make a difference on this team.
People get on Edsall but he did spend time in the NFL with Coughlin so he certainly knows what is needed.
I thought this line, spoke volumes.
But I know this. Whenever he's earned the right to step in and play, Matt's going to be ready to play
Thomas-Hernandez-Pulley-Zeitler-Solder starting and next year, perhaps Thomas-Hernandez-Lemieux-Gates-Peart or something like that. If we have three solid starters for the OL in one draft we are well on our way to be a solid offense.
He tried to copy the old Tommy C, he felt the louder he screamed and closer to the players faces that he got the better coach he is.
Love the comment about how to take a major football program and downsize it.
We suffered through years of him and Durkin and would get excited if we destroyed Howard.
Hell Temple wiped the field with us.
Go Randy
I think some will be very surprised by his overall play and of course his length which helps a great deal. I saw him give up one sack this year and the pressures were only a couple all seven games I attended
I don't want to sound TOO pollyanyish. ;)
Of course, I was excited about Clint Sintim too.
+1

This. I wouldn't trust Edsall's opinion on a breakfast choice let alone a right tackle.

jjgmrg901 - Be glad you weren’t around for the Joe Krivak - Mark Duffner - Ron VanDerLinden debacles. But as bad as they were, they were light years ahead of Edsall.
Listen everyone, I hope Peart has a hall of fame career, but basing anything about talent because Edsall said so is foolhardy, at best.
If you look at the tape of Peart, you see a big man who actually looks thin. He probably can play closer to 325 pounds and he moves very well for a guy that size.
I'm most excited about Thomas. He's the real deal. But getting Peart late in round 3 and then to get Lemieux in round 5 was fantastic. I still don't get why Lemieux fell that far.

Maybe teams thought he was a hockey player? :-)
I don't know much about him, but put me in the group that really isn't swayed by the opinion of Randy Edsall.

Edsall was a major failure at Maryland. As a long time Terp football sufferer it all began with Randy.

Joe Krivak! Haven't heard that name in decades. Brings me back to my wonderful College Park days. He was an offensive pioneer with the endless 3rd and long draw plays.
