From the most recent GM Shuffle podcast released yesterday. Lombardi was talking about the lack of diversity in NFL head coaches where he pointed out the Giants.
He said that Thomas McGaughey is widely viewed in the NFL as an excellent ST coach, but the Giants didn’t consider him because he wasn’t sellable to the fan base, therefore they hired Judge.
I’m glad McGaughey was retained as ST coach, but that statement feels like complete nonsense to me. Just throwing shit against the wall.
Lombardi would be the same guy ripping the Giants if they went with the “safe, predictable” head coach hire.
Can you imagine if the Giants hired ANY assistant coach from Shurmur's staff to be the next HC?
Giants fans have been bitching for years ago going outside the organization.
But Lombardi is a clown. And again, I hope to one love someone like Mike Lombardi loves Mike Lombardi.

He also wanted to hire Kyle Shanahan while in Cleveland, but ownership overruled him and hired Pettine. He’s never been wrong.

Can you parse that last sentence or is that an indication that you have started drinking early?
nothing at all against McGaughey, I'm glad they kept him and perhaps one day he too will get a shot as a head coach, but there's probably about 100 reasons more important than being a "good special teams coach" as to why Judge got hired as a head coach (and why he will either succeed or fail). Team vision, philosophy, experience under Belichek/Saban and their recommendations, leadership, and on and on.
And btw god help anyone in this alternate reality with the misfortune of being in between Lombardi and a microphone in the moments after he'd heard the Giants named McGaughey head coach. He would have stroked out mid-rant against John Mara, just after getting out one of his trademark disclaimers that he "deeply respects the man".
Notably:
* Has ONLY worked for arguabl\y the two greatest collegiate and professional football coaches of all time.
* Mentored directly by The Hooded One, for most of the last decade, to become a head football coach. Was spotted early by Saban, and passed along to Belichick.
* Said Hooded One spent ”days” on the phone with John Mara, holding his hand through the hiring process. Not a bad guy to have pushing your candidacy.
* Has an enormous professional network in the college and professional ranks. Was able to put together a top flight coaching staff, at his own pace, after other teams had already filled out. This was most impressive. Deep connections through the SEC and Saban-Belichick pipeline are vast.
And all the other outstanding intangibles we’re learning such as his command, preparedness, leadership, confidence, championship pedigree, etc.
It’s not really apples to apples when you’re dealing with one-offs like him. That doesn’t mean McGaughey shouldn’t get a look, just that it isn’t ST to ST.

Bingo. A staff that went 5-27 but let's make the ST coach the HC?!??!?
Where did he complain?
Quote:
needed to break up their culture and hire someone from the Pats. The Giants go out and hire from the Pats and now they should have promoted from within. Got it. Just complain about what happened no matter what.
Where did he complain?
Huh? He's complaining we didn't hire our special teams coach. He has complained how we run our team for years because his answer is always the Patriots way.

Is he? I don't see such a complaint in the OP's summary of his comments. He is simply saying the Giants may have hired McLaughlin but were concerned about a fan backlash.
I know we have a persecution complex a mile wide around here, but where is he saying we *should* have done that and made a mistake by going with Judge?
I think there is possibly 2 things to consider. Mccaughey has bounced around quite a bit. Since 2014, he has been a coach on 4 different teams. Why was he let go or not given a new contract? The other thing you see is his career trajectory, he went from special teams coordinator to assistant special teams coordinator in some places.
I am not knocking mccaughey at all, because I am really glad that he was retained and I think he will really start making a name for himself here for future consideration as a head coach somewhere.
Joe judge has steadily climbed through the ranks. 3 years as special teams assistant at Alabama and then 3 years as a special teams assistant in new England before becoming special teams coordinator for another 5 years.
Not many special teams coordinators get hired as head coaches to begin with, it's even harder when you are bouncing all over the place.
2) They didn't just pick an ST coach from a hat and pick Judge. Him being an ST coach was probably the least important reason they hired him as a head coach.
Such absolute nonsense. I can't tell if these people are that dumb or think we're that dumb.
You are confusing him with Quinn
