NFT: Funniest sitcoms? Need another good one

Sonic Youth : 5/22/2020 1:44 pm
Title says it all. Need another funny sitcom. Dramas are great, but too laborious at times for my ADHD.

For reference, my favorite sitcoms are:

1a) Always Sunny
1b) Seinfeld
3) Curb
4) Silicon Valley
5) The Office

Any recommendations for stuff in this vein?

I'm a big fan of three of the five on your list.

If I were going to add others not mentioned, I would say:

Arrested Development (people either LOVE this or HATE...very little middle ground... but the first three seasons were amazing...don't bother with the more recent final two seasons which were garbage).

Big Bang Theory (I put off watching this for years as it didn't look like my cup of tea, but the writing is actually pretty funny).

Better Off Ted (Only survived a few seasons but I thought it deserved a longer run).

Going back, as recommended above, you can't go wrong with Barney Miller. (Unfortunately my streaming services only have the first 2 seasons)
Try...

I agree, it's one of the few sitcoms I investing in buying the series on DVD.

Taxi is another one I did so with as well and a sitcom I would recommend.

Mr Bean is a little quirky and another off the radar series worth watching if you never have.

Parks and Rec

has very similar humor to The office IMO.

Not really a sitcom but I have been enjoying Ricky Gervais' show Afterlife on Netflix. It can be a little sad at times but also very funny.
Get Smart. My all-time favorite sitcom.

Definitely give it a look. Personally, I thought it was far superior to the American version.
I recently started watching Taxi

I hadn't seen that show in decades, and its still as funny as I remembered it being.

Danny DeVito is brilliant, and quite a few of the recurring and guest cast memebers ended up appearing in Cheers later on as both shows were produced by the same person.

Taxi is kind of strange for me. It has two of three of my all time favorite comedy characters but as a whole I do not rate the show that high.

Arrested Development is one I recently got into -- really really liking it so far!

To the poster who mentioned Party Down -- that's another one of my all time favorites. Parks and Rec is also something I've liked when I've seen it, but never stuck with it, just seen random episodes. I love Aziz though, huge fan of my funny Indian-American bretheren.

Gotta say though, Big Bang Theory is one of my most hated shows lol. Maybe I should give it a shot, but I have such a huge aversion to it.

Gonna check out Better Off Ted since multiple people have mentioned it. Might try Brooklyn 99 as I've heard good things as well.

It's heresy but I agree re MASH. Hugely popular for years, my mom loved it (really, Alan Alda), and I thought I did. But watch the last 6-7(!) seasons and it's just painfully bad a lot of the time. The first 4 or so, though, were genuinely funny.

I read the difference was that the first 4 or so seasons "belonged" to Larry Gelbart and it was a writers' show. But then Alda wrested control and it was all about him and got overly earnest, sentimental, cutesy. New/replacement characters paled in comparison. Henry Blake / Trapper John / Frank Burns vs. Colonel Potter / BJ Hunnicutt / C. Winchester... laughable (ironically).

I used to watch it because my dad loved it. We love Frank Burns. But Alan Alda is just painful. The show did not age well.

Still, I remember crying my eyes out when Radar told everyone in the operating room that Colonel Blake's plan crashed.

I had an odd aversion to the show while it aired. Yet, coworkers would discuss the show and encourage me to watch it. I just didn't want to watch a show about a bunch of geeks.

It was after the Fappening release of Kaley Couco's pictures that I decided to give it a shot. Watched a random show, and it was funny. But of course, I didn't understand the character relationships. So I gave it an honest shot starting from the beginning. I've really enjoyed the show and like The Office, it is one of the shows that despite seeing every episode multiple times I still tune in to watch.

pjcas18 : 5/22/2020 3:21 pm : link
you may have seen that were avoided by some people but were absolutely worth watching IMO.

Everybody Loves Raymond mentioned above. Frank was classic.

King of Queens. Arthur hilarious.

Modern Family. I began watching it with my then 8 year old because it came on after the Goldberg's and we just stuck with it. Great ensemble cast, deceptively funny and so subtle my 8-year old didn't get many of the jokes.

They had their final episode this year and it was funny hearing the kids in the cast talk about how they re-watch the show now from the beginning and realize they had no idea why some of the things they said were funny - usually double entendre or innuendo - and now they get it. Well it was funny and I guess a little sad to if you allow yourself to realize many of the kids were exploited and will suffer for it the rest of their lives (probably) like many child actors do.

I also watched the Middle with this same child and she loved it, was sad when it ended.

Also Scrubs (didn't watch with my daughter, but another good ensemble cast.)

I recommend watching all of them as you make your way through the list.
Thank God...

totally agree re: Arrested Development. The show does not work unless you watch it from the beginning. It has a huge cast of characters with their own idiosyncrasies, and it's impossible for it to hit its potential without getting to know the characters first.

Might have to pass on Big Bang Theory though -- I find Sheldon's character to be insufferable, so, as you said, I probably wouldn't like that show.

This is a bit of a tangent, but IMO, it's Always Sunny vs Seinfeld for the top spot for funniest show of all time. I actually think Sunny edges out Seinfeld, but similar to Arrested Development, it only hits its potential once you get to know the characters.

Well written and acted. Episode (Season 5) where they pretended they were Jewish was hilarious. The Valentine's Day episode where Niles sets the sofa on fire is brilliant physical acting - on par with Chaplin and Lewis, IMO.

In terms of recent stuff Veep is great (with 2 vets of Seinfeld and Arrested Development).

Brand new I like Fleabag very quirky and not for everyone and am now enjoying The Great on Amazon Prime - kinda a thinking man's Schitts Creek.

Obviously most of these are shows I watched as a kid. But I really really really like Everybody Loves Raymond a LOT! And I never saw a single episode in its original run. Someone at work recommended it to me as they thought it was up my alley and they were right.

Funny with The Office...most people seem to prefer the British version, and while I liked it, it just seemed a bit too dark to me, especially David. I find that I like the Michael Scott character much more than David Brent.

I didnt consider F&G a sitcom and thats the only reason it didnt make my list. Awesome show.

For some reason I always thought Id hate it and never gave it a chance. After seeing it was the same guy behind Home Movies i gave it a shot and absolutely love it. The kids are hilarious.

For those who said What We Do in the Shadows, check out the original movie with Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi. One of my favorite comedies of all time. Its really that good.

Speaking of adult animation, Rick and Morty is incredible. It's definitely not something that would gel with the people who are on this board, but oh man, that show is incredibly hilarious.

I love just about everything on Adult Swim. Rick and Morty is the crown jewel, but theres so many legitimately awesome original shows. My favorites are probably Check It Out with Dr. Brule and The Eric Andre Show. Also been digging Joe Pera Talks with You. Tim and Eric's new show Beef House is pretty good too. Really hoping to see a second season of Genndy Tartakovsky's Primal soon, which I think is deserving of some awards. Its amazing that such good shows can be relegated to strange overnight time slots and still find a diehard audience.
Totally on the same page as you
Sonic Youth : 5/22/2020 6:08 pm : link
I love Eric Andre, although its EXTREMELY hit or miss for other people. You either love it or don't get it/hate it.

Tim and Eric are also awesome. I like their horror/comedy Bedtime Stories series.

But one thing that is universal IMO is Check It Out -- John C Reily is a national treasure
+1'ing many suggestions above

Frasier & Veep are top tier. Haven't watched Frasier in a little bit but it held up great for at least 10 years after it went off the air. 30 Rock is also solid but not as good as the first 2. Can't go wrong with those 3.

May have missed it but all in the family still holds up as well, and is obviously top tier.

Some others that are a more recent and not entirely sitcomy - Schitt's Creek, Sex Education, Fleabag, Mrs. Maisel, Master of None. It also sounds like you would really like Community.

I hadn't seen that show in decades, and its still as funny as I remembered it being.

Danny DeVito is brilliant, and quite a few of the recurring and guest cast memebers ended up appearing in Cheers later on as both shows were produced by the same person.
I always loved Taxi. Judd Hirsch is my cousin (I never met him, but my mom saw him aot as a kid). Jim is the best character in TV history, in my opinion.
We binge watched the entire series of Schitt's Creek

we did a thread on this a while ago, but it's amazing if you go back and look at stuff you used to think was funny. Sometimes it is painfully bad. MASH immediately comes to mind.
Eric - do you think the humor doesn't stand up today, or your taste changed? I feel the same about MASH. But a couple of other favorites from that era in Barney Miller, All in the Family, and The Jeffersons I can still watch and enjoy.

Another from my childhood that I've caught a few times recently and can't watch is Diff'rent Strokes.

I have read a few articles saying that Michael Richards used the character of Jim as an influence on his portrayal of Kramer.

nobody said, "Two Broke Girls" that's the worst sitcom that lasted far too long.

Current SITCOM that is very funny and very clever is: "What We do in the Shadows"

awful, and I didn't realize it but the brunette was the daughter from the 40-year old virgin. So annoying.
I remember when Two Brome Girls started ae wanted to watch mostly because we like Kat Dennings. For an episode or two, she was funny. But the show was terrible and most of the cast sucks. I can't stand the other girl at all...not even nice to look at.

For me the saddest part is seeing Garret Morris reduced to that crap. And I usually like Jennifer Coolidge, but asking her to do that Eastern European accent was a brutal decision.

Jim Ignatowski is the best comedy character in TV history followed by George Costanza and Louie de Palma.
Schitts Creek and Master of None...
Sonic Youth : 5/22/2020 6:54 pm : link
Schitts Creek was pretty funny, I watched the first few episodes of season 1. I think Eugene Levy is hilarious (going back to being Jim's dad in American Pie), and his son has similar acting chops/comedic timing, I should add that to the list.

Master of None..... I love Aziz, everyone tells me I need to watch this show, but its way way way too real to me. Bugs me out. I'm literally watching my life and insecurities on screen -- I'm sure it'd be cathartic to some degree, but its a pill thats hard to swallow. When it came out, I was literally an Indian-American working as a production assistant that was living in NYC. Felt too real, couldn't enjoy it

I also used to think the early years (McLean Stevenson, Wayne Rogers) were great and then it declined but a couple of years ago I saw some season 1 and 2 episodes and nah, it was never very good. The laugh track doesn't help but mostly it's just not funny.

The movie, OTOH, is still great though falls into the category of movies that you couldn't make today since the sexism is off the charts.

I believe I read they greenlight a 3rd season but not positive, I'm pretty sure it did well for them so I'd be surprised if they didn't but all productions are in limbo right now so who knows. S2 ended on kind of an over cliched low note so I hope they have a chance to fix that and not end there.

Arrested Development (the original seasons, not what Netflix did)
Raising Hope (as mentioned above)
