Watch Tales of the Loop. It reminds me of those late-70's made for TV sci-fi flicks. The premise and environment is slightly derivative, but the storyline is just fantastic.

You can always nit pick about particular episodesnot being great or whatever, but those two series are the standards that others are held to. Very original concepts at the time with good storytelling and interesting characters.

Its always fun to spot actors who appeared in both series too.

to find original Star Trek somewhere and watch it with my kids. I grew up watching the first re-runs in the early 70s, so it's a sentimental favorite. Deservedly iconic.

Only KIND of sci-fi, but has anyone ever watched The Prisoner? From the mid/late 60s, I think, and I've only seen a few episodes - just weirdly fascinating.

a couple of years ago I mentioned 'The Invaders' in a post here. At the time I was able to find it on an app my nephew loaded into my firestick. I know that's not much help, but if I remember the name of it, I'll post it here. I was able to find it on Morpheus, but that app doesn't work at all anymore.
There's another old British series you might like.
Klaatu : 5/22/2020 3:08 pm : link
The Champions. As it says in the imdb listing, Adventure, Sci-Fi, Thriller, but I'd say it's less of a sci-fi show and more of an action-adventure. It's about three secret agents who are endowed with super powers after their plane crashes in the Himalayas and they're rescued by members of a secret society. Kind of like James Bond meets Lost Horizon.

I have both seasons on dvd somewhere. With all of the remakes they do make, this one would be a great one to do. I never really got into Space 1999, I know that was a sort of spinoff of U.F.O.

this talk of sci-fi shows and no one mentions Doctor Who? Shame on you all.

In no order of preference:

-Lost in Space - there's a new version on Netflix well worth the watch

-Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea

-Farscape - the show that put the Sci-fi channel on the map

-Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

You might be able to get the Invaders

on OTA TV. Here in Albany, it's on METV (Link on Saturday nights. There's another link where you can put your Zip Code in to see if that station is in your area.

Love The Prisoner...Patrick McGoohan is perfect for the role! He also played the lead in Secret Agent (you may have heard the song "Secret Agent Man" by Johnny Rivers...that was for this show!).

The Prisoner was decades before its time, and it's a bit frightening when you think about how McGoohan speculated about society trying to manipulate people with technology, psychology and surveillance. It's worth your time to watch the series, although the ending was confusing and controversial in it's own way...

Only sort of. In typical British TV fashion, the lone season of UFO was released in spurts rather than in a continuous episode stream. Initial ratings were good and a second season was green lighted. That season was to feature extensively expanded moon bases and operations. After getting well into pre-production, ratings sunk for the later UFO episodes and Season 2 was cancelled. Not wanting to let the work and money go to waste, the Andersons recycled it into Space 1999. But there’s no storyline connection between the two.

UFO is flat out awesome.

If you have Amazon Prime, UFO is currently on the IMDB channel which is free with a few commercials.

The show is also restored in amazing HD, and looks like it was made a couple years ago. Just phenomenal color and detail. I assume because these late '60's shows were filmed with real cinema film cameras vice video.

UFO only ran for one year in US in like 1971 or 72, then basically disappeared completely. Every kid in my neighborhood was hooked on that show.

I watched it last year with my late 20's kids and they love it, too.

Spinoff was the wrong word, I guess loosely based prequel then? I remember Space 1999 came out around the time Star Trek was at it's tv peak. (I think) It seemed so damn boring at the time. Maybe I'll give it another watch.

Definitely not a prequel. UFO Season 1 was set in @1980. The plan was to have second season be set 20 years in the future, with a bigger Moonbase, more advanced weapons and equipment. But still dealing with UFOs attempting to invade Earth. Space 1999 has no connection to any of that. They just made use of the sets and models they were planning to use for UFO Season 2.

Of course.

The best thing about the Irwin Allen shows was that you could see the same monsters used in both Lost in Space and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Allen was nothing if not frugal.

Never heard of it. Tried it. Just couldn't handle it. Unimaginable, insulting, rancid mess in every conceivable way. No wonder some just detest us as a people (if we were capable of doing something like this). SciFi can be good, very good, but did it come from this? Unthinkable. Were Flash Gordon and Captain Video before this? Might return to this thread for the answer, but it's probably better to just stay away -- abandon it.

I'm not in the business of telling other people what they should like or dislike. It's no skin off my nose if you don't like UFO.

However, an "...insulting, rancid mess in every conceivable way?" Seriously? That was your take on UFO?

"No wonder some just detest us as a people (if we were capable of doing something like this)."

I don't even know how to respond to a statement like that. I'd reserve a statement like yours for genocide, for an actual crime against humanity, not for a 50-year old sci-fi TV show from the UK.

Holy crap.
