are a real thing. But just as important, IMO is getting Kreider back, and even more important, is the respite that all our young players have received from the long NHL grinds that they are not used to tends to wear down young players.
I know that seems counter-intuitive -- the older guys' bodies should be the ones that need the rest. These 'older' guys in their late 20s have learned how to manage the grind, how to prepare in the of season and have benefitted from years of top-notch weight, conditioning and nutritional programs that comes with elite professional sports.
The format of play whenever and if ever it starts. But here is something to think about, if play started on July 1st, this format would probably take about 10 weeks to complete, that takes you to the middle of September, what do you do about next season, start after this season ends? What about the draft? When does that happen, how is the draft order determined, the draft is normally in June, when the season is over and that is how the draft order is determined, you going to have a September draft, when players need to know befor that so they can commit to where they are going, some may need to return to college, a guy like Morgan Barron, already drafted by the Rangers, played in college last year has made no commitment because he has no information yet. The issues are far reaching.
That there is a realistic chance of an extended NHL playoff tournament this summer? This is good to keep the fans engaged and generate some buzz around the league, but this isn’t at all feasible.
What happens if (when) a player on a team tests positive for COVID? Is that team eliminated? Or do they just take the ice and keep playing knowing the whole team was in the room with him the day before?
And what kind of play will you get after this kind of layoff and limited practice time?
As much as I miss hockey, 2019-2020 season should be shut down. Focus on a way to get 2020-2021 underway.
You test the whole teAm before every game, if a player is positive they can’t play and go into quarantine. If team can’t field a team they forfeit. Reminder that jazz had only 2 guys test positive in a sport that has generally much closer proximity so doesn’t seem like it’s likely a whole team would go down.

Testing doesn’t ensure anything though, someone negative can be positive the next day. It’s risk/reward. At some point you have to just roll with the risk but I don’t think this is all that great of a solution. It would require daily testing, IMO which is a resource hog and doesn’t seem right.

What will be different in October?
They have to cancel 2020-2021 as well and hope for a vaccine in a year.
A quarantined league at a remote location could work and I think will end up happening.

Think you have it pretty much right, UConn (hope you're all well, haven't ventured into Stamford since late Feb). Testing before every game, as bhhill suggests, is truly worse than useless, unless the team will collectively come to a facility only on game days. And so much is being learned, and at the same time unlearned, about covid, testing may give false comfort and still very little clarity on the window when the virus can shed between contraction and time testing shows accurate positives.
So many variables undetermined it's pointless to speculate yet.
Leaving aside Covid from a purely hockey perspective if the plan is to come back and start with the playoffs it's a mistake. The level of play would be an embarrassment.
I'll leave the health and safety aspects to those with the expertise and resources to determine.

Mike: the chances of someone in their 20s dying from Covid is about 1 in 10000
Now, it’s true they will have high contact which spreads the disease. But they are also going to get tested regularly
I think playing hockey with the risk of concussions and other injuries is likely more than the risk of Covid to
A healthy guy in his 20s
That said, guys with
Underlying conditions should not be eligible
There is a reason the stay at home orders are not only applicable to vulnerable people. The risk isn’t necessarily that the players will get COVID and die, but will keep spreading it. If the only concern was that players not die, they could have kept playing the season with no fans in the stands.
And some of the coaches, asst. coaches and equipment guys That will also be around are not all 20-something Year old professional athletes.

Or october 2021 for that matter.
The show must go on Id have made this a 20 or 21 team tournament. Montreal chicago and Arizona shouldn’t be here. But they are trying to make more money so I get it. Let’s roll
for the record, the Hurricanes were one of only two teams to vote against the suggested playoff format.
I don't think anyone wants to play the Rangers.
pj, that's a nice compliment, esp. coming from a cognoscenti. But, Rangers' play at time of shutdown (whenever that was) hardly a guaranty of where they might pick up in these Kabuki Playoffs. Mika was on fire, he was incandescent, love him, but hard to see him just step on to the ice three months and a covid era interregnum later and be the same, same for Buch, who was really playing well, or Fox or any of 'all the young dudes'.
I wonder if the GKs find it easier to transition, just because GK is such a solitary island to begin with, kind of like isolation, quarantine. Igor
First of all, having an extended playoffs under the current conditions doesn't seem feasible unless they were then planning a late start to next season and a shortened season next year as well. Second, this just seems cheap.
I forgot he has type 1 diabetes, so he would be especially vulnerable to Covid-19 if hockey resumes play. Davidson indicated he may leave him off the roster to ensure he was safe.
The story I read his only comment was they'd rely on the best science and medical opinions they could engage. Domi subsequently indicated he would probably play with the same condition. We'll see what happens. I think there is a fair chance he will play.
The data regarding the diabetes risk I've seen has been skewed to those that have been hospitalized with Corona vs. an overall risk analysis of those with the condition.
Maybe Shestorkin gets hot and we have some fun this summer?

And what level of play are you expecting to see after a three month layoff? How long do teams practice before the games begin?
If teams can practice safely aim for that in Sept/Oct and employ this to get a new season underway.

If they win the first series to whittle it down from 24 to the more traditional 16 teams then you can say they made the playoffs.
I believe the 8 teams eliminated in the play-in are lottery eligible, but still TBD.

Eat shit with your technicalities. We are in the playoffs, loser.
I'm curious what they do if someone tests positive. Someone like Kakko probably shouldn't come back (diabetes/Celiac), right?

I know we had to high picks, but man was that a pathetic draft

Well there was good logic in that pick ... sucks it didn’t work out. Onwards and upwards (hopefully)
And yet Bure was even faster.
