Ever wonder what 1994 could have been

djstat : 5/23/2020 8:52 pm
In 1993, the Giants under Dan Reeves stunned everyone and went 11-5. They were an OT field goal away from beating the Cowboys and winning the NFC East and Homefied through out. In '93, it looked like Simms found the fountain of youth with the best receiving core he had had in years with Mike Sherrard, Mark Jackson, Ed McCaffery, Chris Calloway and Dave Meggett catching passes out of the backfield. Cross and Aaron Pierce were catching passes at TE and H Back.

I remember even with LT retiring, being excited for 1994. The salary cap started that year and the Giants Lost Center Bart Oates, Reserve Lineman Eric Moore and starting guard Bob Kratch. Brian Williams replaced Oates and there was minimal loss. William Roberts and Lance SMith were the guards. Jumbo Elliott and Doug Reisenberg were the tackles. Rodney Hampton was the Jewel of the offense in '92 and '93. On Defense we lost MArk Collins at CB, Myron Guyton at Strong Safety and Greg Jackson at Free Safety. Obviously LT was gone.

I still had excitement for 1994 until June 14, 1994. Two days after OJ Simpson's ex wife was found murdered and rumors of OJ being a suspect were ramping up, ESPN reported that the Giants were releasing Simms. I was one angry 16 year old kid. I was a huge Simms fan.

Reading articles on "Prodigy" that offseason it had appeared that Simms was recovering well from shoulder surgery but George Young wanted to see Dave Brown and Kent Graham play. Young also was clueless about how to manage the cap. While San Francisco and Dallas restructured contracts and were creative, Young lost players and struggled.

I honestly never forgave Young for cutting Simms. It is probably why I never cared that Young was not in the Hall of Fame. As the Giants navigated through that odd 1994 season, starting 3-0, then a 7 game losing streak, followed by a 6 game win streak, I always wondered what if Simms was the QB and not the incompetent Dave Brown.

Weird season.

Start 3-0, lose 7 straight, & then win 6 in a row & miss out on playoffs with Packers winning their season finale.

If Simms had been our QB, I think we probably are a better team for sure.
Young was a great GM but

really didn't adjust well to free agency and the salary cap.

He was completely out of his element when free agency started. He wasn’t the only GM you could say that about.
FA and Cap was not easy.....especially with a seasoned team

That won a Super Bowl 1990.

You and I might be the only two posters here who don’t really care that Young is not in the Hall. You nailed my feelings on the subject.

You re writing about 94 made me remember the final game of 93 when Jackson dropped a key third down pass against him he Cowboys in a loss that cost the Giants home field advantage in the playoff.
And John Starks could have hit just a few of his three pointers

94 makes me sick to my stomach. All the time spent watching the Knicks losing to Jordan, time and time again to finally making it to NBA finals. A moment I have been eagerly awaiting my entire sports fan life to go split screen and picture in picture in Game 5 sharing valuable television real estate with a white bronco driving on the highway. OMG they are not going to do this, just throw down tire strips or something, I am trying the watch favorite team in the biggest game of my life a b-ball fan. Then the dreaded Game 7 to see John Starks go 0-11 from 3 point land and 2 for 18 overall and finish as only 6 point losers. Rip my sports fan heart out and drive over it with a Ford. #FU94

Exactly . I remember thinking, even at 14 at the time, If I wanted to watch oj drive on the highway I would have turned to one of the other stations showing that. Let me watch the knicks in game 6.
Don't worry Knicks fan kid 1994 will get better
SteelGiant : 5/24/2020 7:42 am : link
You get to see your team play great to only be ousted by Reggie Miller Pacers where you can see him beat you team in Game 1 by scoring 8 point 9 seconds LOL. Good grief. What 94 could have been.

Thats interesting, I was turning 14 that year. I wonder if it has to with the combination of being a die hard sports fan and combining that with adolesce that burned that moment in my memory of being so angry.
On the positive

The rangers did win the cup.

Simms deal was wrong for so many reasons. They cut him in June. Not even June 1, but June 14, two weeks later. Simms has little chance to be a starter. Reading an article from newsday, interesting how John Mara comments on his fathers feelings about the move and the impact it had on his relationship with Young.

Twenty years later, Phil Simms looks back on his shocking release from the Giants - ( New Window )
Nothing can ruin 1994...

It was the year I finally had the moment that would allow me to die in peace. The Rangers win the Stanley Cup on June 14th was the big news story of a lifetime... I'm glad I enjoyed the hell out of it. Doesn't look like lightning will strike twice in my lifetime.
Young destroyed the OL
Vanzetti : 5/24/2020 2:18 pm : link
Giving Riesenberg big money was a huge mistake.

But Simms was biggest mistake. He had another two years left, espvislly with a dominant run blocking OL

Everyone forgets Phil was a huge fumbler for most of his career. Last couple of years he overcame it. All things considered, he was still a good QB. Brown what a terrible
Mistake

Except we don't really know how bad Simms' shoulder was after 1993.
When I think of 1994 and sports and lost opportunity

I really focus on the Knicks. They blew a legitimate chance to win a championship.
1994 the Rangers win the Cup

I was ecstatic , the next day, the Giants cut Simms... I was destroyed

to this Day I believe Simms had a few more Seasons in the tank

1993, Mike Sherrard finally gives Simms a Legit #1 WR and lasts what? 4-6 games? They were going places those 2

Mark Jackson drops a pass against Dallas? in that OT game? argh

I also thought he had time left. But, maybe he didn't. Did he not take Cleveland or the Cards up on their interest because he didn't want to play for another franchise, or was he done?

And Sherrard just couldn't stay healthy, so it doesn't matter.

I was such a huge Knicks fan back then. My most hated players in any sport are:

Anyone on the Eagles
Reggie Miller
Mourning and Hardaway
Romo
Jordan Bulls

'93 still burns. I thought we had Chicago after Game 2. How naïve was I about MJ...

'94. I still think Starks makes that 3 if Hakeem doesn't get a piece of it.

After the Game 7 loss to Indiana in '95, I sorta knew that that era was over. Then Pat sends the fax & jets to Miami.

That Knicks team should have won a title.
