FWIW, Ourlads final pre-draft grades (round) for NYG players

Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/24/2020 4:20 pm
It's interesting to note where these players were projected to go BEFORE the draft.

RB Javon Leake - 7th round
WR Ben Victor - 6th round
OT Andrew Thomas - 1st round
OT Matt Peart - 3rd round
OG Shane Lemieux - 3rd round
OG Kyle Murphy - 7th round
LB Cam Brown - 4th round
LB Carter Coughlin - 5th round
CB Darnay Holmes - 6th round
DB Chris Williamson - 7th round
S Xavier McKinney - 1st round
Cam Brown as a 4th rounder is an interesting outlier

haven't really seen that anywhere.
After the 4th round, the draft is really a grab bag and a player

Projected for after Round 4 can be picked anywhere in rounds 5-7 or undrafted. So the only surprise is where the Giants got Lemieux and where they picked Holmes. Hoping Lemieux is a steal and Holmes was a lucky reach.

Not surprised is how close Sy’56 matched Ourlads in this small sample. I guess Ourlads relies on his reports pretty closely.
Darnay Holmes in the 6th?!
Simms11 : 5/24/2020 4:44 pm : link
We drafted him in the 4th and so we reached for him?
Not buying Darnay Holmes as a 6th rounder
BillT : 5/24/2020 4:45 pm : link
Might have been a bit of a steal in the 4th.
I've

said it before, of all our drafted and undrafted players, Holmes is the guy people were all over the place on. Some love him. Others were meh.

the people that studied him as a junior we're positive, the one's that only saw him as a senior not as much. Of course injuries will often mask performance.
I think the dispute on Holmes
Giantsfan79 : 5/24/2020 4:56 pm : link
has more to do with the fact he's not an outside corner and there is a school of thought that corners who can't play outside are lesser players, much like slot receivers are considered weaker players then the outside guys.
Even though
PaulN : 5/24/2020 5:09 pm : link
Holmes played on the outside, Holmes was a good pick where he was picked and not at all a reach.
Holmes made a positive impression as a Slot corner

At Senior Bowl.

He never played the slot beforehand....he was exclusively anboutside corner in College
He is
PaulN : 5/24/2020 5:23 pm : link
Better suited to play the slot on this level, has plenty of experience on the outside, his technique is poor at times as he can get sloppy, but he has the raw skill and tools, many called him a day two pick. When drafted most people screamed reach over Cam Brown, today he is a steal, unreal.
Slot corner
Coach Red Beaulieu : 5/24/2020 5:25 pm : link
has to be a hybrid of Darrell Revis and Jessie Armstead.
He's very small -- that's the biggest reason

size matters
Maybe it's the Seahawks test.
Gene Filipski : 5/24/2020 7:27 pm : link
Some draft gurus say that the Seahawks will not draft a CB whose arms are shorter than 32". Holmes' arms are far from that requirement, being only 29.5" long.

Plus, although he's 4.48 in the 40, he's only 1.64 for 10 yards. Cam Brown, for example, is 1.61 for 10 yds.

However, we all believe that games are played on the field and not on paper. Holmes is an excellent player and I'm sure he will demonstrate that ability on the field.

My comments above about his arm length and speed for 10 yards was only to speculate as to why some draft gurus had him ranked so low pre-draft.

5’9 3/4” and 195 isn’t very small.
All told, those grades

show they MAY have and probably did drafted well.
Seems
Breeze_94 : 5/25/2020 2:52 am : link
like they got some good value but I feel like every teams message board can find one or two rankings that make it seem like they have a great haul.

Thomas was top OT, may have been a minor reach though since there were a couple of guys who were better overall prospects on the board. In terms of need/positional value, I think it was the right pick.

No disputing that McKinney was a great value. Some had him going top 20. Best S in this draft.

Peart has tools that would suggest he'd be a top 50 guy in a lesser OT class. Think this was a good value.

Holmes- think the Giants got him right around where he should've gone. Had great 2018 film, put some poor film out last season though (vs WSU), undersized and is a slot corner. But I do think he has a chance to be a good one- reminds me a bit of Adoree Jackson.

Lemieux- think the 5th round was fair for him. Not the best athlete but had a great college career and could develop into an average/slightly above avg starter.

Brown- good athlete, looks very unpolished on film. Definitely needs to work on some things. Looks like a 6th rounder to me. Does have some upside though.

Coughlin- based on film/production, he's a day 2 or early day 3 guy. But he is undersized and a bit of a tweener- doesn't do anything great. I think he'll ultimately out perform his draft slot.

Brunson- looked like a UDFA to me.

Williamson- eh. Nothing special. At least he's versatile. Looked like a barely draftable guy.

Crowder- think he was better than Brunson. Looks raw but think he can become a solid depth and ST guy who can start in a pinch. 6th or 7th round value. Giants got him with last pick of the draft
What you like about Holmes
Vanzetti : 5/25/2020 3:36 pm : link
Is that he started his freshman year and played three years as a starter at UCLA

He is a guy who has a chance to get a decent number of snaps from the day he plays his first NFL game

You need guys like that. I liked Reese but his downfall was looking for a high ceiling star in every round. Holmes won’t be a star but he will be a contributor for 4 years at a low cost

No way he would have lasted to the 6th round
