It's interesting to note where these players were projected to go BEFORE the draft.
RB Javon Leake - 7th round
WR Ben Victor - 6th round
OT Andrew Thomas - 1st round
OT Matt Peart - 3rd round
OG Shane Lemieux - 3rd round
OG Kyle Murphy - 7th round
LB Cam Brown - 4th round
LB Carter Coughlin - 5th round
CB Darnay Holmes - 6th round
DB Chris Williamson - 7th round
S Xavier McKinney - 1st round
Not surprised is how close Sy’56 matched Ourlads in this small sample. I guess Ourlads relies on his reports pretty closely.
He never played the slot beforehand....he was exclusively anboutside corner in College
size matters
Plus, although he's 4.48 in the 40, he's only 1.64 for 10 yards. Cam Brown, for example, is 1.61 for 10 yds.
However, we all believe that games are played on the field and not on paper. Holmes is an excellent player and I'm sure he will demonstrate that ability on the field.
My comments above about his arm length and speed for 10 yards was only to speculate as to why some draft gurus had him ranked so low pre-draft.
size matters
5’9 3/4” and 195 isn’t very small.
Thomas was top OT, may have been a minor reach though since there were a couple of guys who were better overall prospects on the board. In terms of need/positional value, I think it was the right pick.
No disputing that McKinney was a great value. Some had him going top 20. Best S in this draft.
Peart has tools that would suggest he'd be a top 50 guy in a lesser OT class. Think this was a good value.
Holmes- think the Giants got him right around where he should've gone. Had great 2018 film, put some poor film out last season though (vs WSU), undersized and is a slot corner. But I do think he has a chance to be a good one- reminds me a bit of Adoree Jackson.
Lemieux- think the 5th round was fair for him. Not the best athlete but had a great college career and could develop into an average/slightly above avg starter.
Brown- good athlete, looks very unpolished on film. Definitely needs to work on some things. Looks like a 6th rounder to me. Does have some upside though.
Coughlin- based on film/production, he's a day 2 or early day 3 guy. But he is undersized and a bit of a tweener- doesn't do anything great. I think he'll ultimately out perform his draft slot.
Brunson- looked like a UDFA to me.
Williamson- eh. Nothing special. At least he's versatile. Looked like a barely draftable guy.
Crowder- think he was better than Brunson. Looks raw but think he can become a solid depth and ST guy who can start in a pinch. 6th or 7th round value. Giants got him with last pick of the draft
He is a guy who has a chance to get a decent number of snaps from the day he plays his first NFL game
You need guys like that. I liked Reese but his downfall was looking for a high ceiling star in every round. Holmes won’t be a star but he will be a contributor for 4 years at a low cost
No way he would have lasted to the 6th round
