First, I do believe Gettleman had a good draft last year even with the Baker folly over his head right now. I think Baker will be exonerated of a felony though he may face a NFL suspension. The kid will either "grow up" and give it his best or be cut before season's end to send a message.
Second, it is too early to tell if this year's draft was good but I'm with Eric that we may have drafted 3 OL's that start for us in 2021, perhaps even getting late season starts to give us a taste of 2021.
Third, I do believe this team will be competitive but may be straddled with a bad start due to lack of cohesiveness on both sides of the ball. A new offense and defense with limited OTA's for a young team doesn't bode well.
This team could be 4-12 or 9-7, somewhere in between, unless the NFC East gets hit with injuries to QB's and more.
The OL is our weakest link until proven otherwise followed by lack of ER. I do believe we'll be stronger on DL, LB and secondary overall. I also like our TE's better this year and of course Daniel Jones should be exceptional.
Thoughts?
Lawrence hasn’t done a thing yet the jury is still out otherwise DG never would have went after LW..... PFF thinks he’s great I personally watched a guy get pushed around and plays to high .... and it’s on film , ok defensive tackle is tough as a rookie but some people have him as the next Reggie White and I hope he becomes half the player he was ..... but it’s much too early to say he gets a second contract imo
Find pieces at Edge, WR, Center and unfortunately still in Secondary. Show the league that Jones and Barkley have enough support around them that they can win games in the 4qtr for Giants. And let’s see that our coaches get the guys ready to play more often than not, and develop college talent.
Then we can talk about accomplishments.
We've been saying for years 2020 would open a window but now still look like a fledgling team, even after all the cap space.
That being said, if Jones is exceptional as OP suggests, than I would expect around a 7 win team, which is measurable progress. Logically speaking they won 4 games last year, an exceptional qb should lead to more wins.

I believe DG has 3 out of 4 draft first round picks worthy of getting a second contract with the Giants. Barkley, Jones, and Lawrence should get a second contract with us. In the Reese era only JPP received a 2nd contract of the first rounders. If you don't draft well you will not win in the NFL with the salary cap.

The jury is still out on all these players. None of them have done anything. If Dan Jones fumbles another 20 times this year, is he still a definite second contract player? Come on. Replacing “I hope” with “I believe” doesn’t make a statement a coherent argument.

Yep, the rebuild isn’t accomplished until they start winning more games than they lose. Until then they haven’t accomplished anything.
On paper there is improvement, but this roster as is figures to struggle to be average.
The Niners lost their QB after three games in 2018. That's why they were so bad that year.

...to the second to last pick in 2020. The Giants could do the same. Or not. That's the NFL for you. If the Giants stay healthy, if they are well coached, they will go far. Maybe not to the Super Bowl, but why the hell not? There are no great teams. Certainly not in the NFC East.

Exactly! There's always a reason. When the Giants win the Super Bowl people will point to Barkley's return to health and the development of Daniel Jones. They will talk about how the young defense came together and how Gettleman finally fixed the OL. There are always all sorts of reasons why a team seemingly comes out of nowhere. But it happens all the time. Who can forget the 1999 Rams. Talk about a team come out of nowhere! And it's not likely anyone was talking up the Giants chances going into 2007 and 2011. Far from it! But afterwards there were reasons. And it usually begins with good health.
I know we have holes but so do other teams. If we stay healthy, and the OL rebounds, we may be more competitive than most pundits think.
