NFT: Tentatively booked travel for Sept NYC, need restaurant help

shocktheworld : 5/25/2020 4:32 pm
Everything is tentatively booked, but I’ll be keeping a close eye on the damn Covid....My ultimate goal is to be in town for my first “home” Giants game that Monday night... but the wife’s bday is a nice backup reason to hit NYC and get in the eats and sights!

I’m 42, and from Texas (weird NYG fan, I know) but I’ve only seen the Giants live in AZ and Dallas (which gets old, I was there for the opener last year). I was able to visit NY/NJ back in 2010 but it was for work and I only got to spend one day in NYC and one afternoon checking out the New Stadium. But it was offseason so no access was permitted. Saw just enough of the City to know I'd return one day, with more time to spend. It’s such a nice place...

This time (hopefully) we can see a game live, but either way I’d love some suggestions on restaurants that are “must visit” and any advice on how to spend 4-5 days checking the city out.

We are staying at The W in Times Square, so hopefully we are in a good spot to home base it from!

What are BBI’s “if you had to pick one”: best steakhouse or fancy restaurant and then what other “must try” eateries are out there?

Thanks for any advice, and obviously if they allow fans into the stadium, I’ll have to link up with my fellow fans from BBI! I’ve been on the site since ‘97 so it would be really cool to meet some fellow BBI’ers!

Thanks for your help!

All our restaurants are closed.

Of course any New Yorker could give you a list, but the problem is we have no idea if they’ll be open in September, ever again, or in what capacity.

I wish I had a better answer for you, but I don’t think anyone has any idea how this is going to shake out.
Olive Garden, red lobster, Applebee’s

All really near the W and offering delivery!
If you haven't been to NYC
pjcas18 : 5/25/2020 7:34 pm : link
and you can save Sbarro and Olive Garden for next time I'd say try and get in to Carmine's.

It's kind of touristy - but it's convenient to the W and the food is excellent. it's family style though, so for a couple might be a lot of food.

If you really want a steak house I'd go to Sparks. Walkable on a nice night, but from what I have heard Peter lugers is no longer a cut above the other popular steak houses and I've never had a bad meal at Sparks.

really depends on whats open....

Olive Garden, red lobster, Applebee’s ?? Seriously???

Steak--I love Smith & Wollensky East side. Great, not cheap.
Seafood- Try AquaGrill Spring Street, downtown.

Have a good time, hope you get to see a them win a game.
It's been awhile-

But I loved Patsy's for Italian when in that area.

A bit touristy maybe but I'm addicted to old school red sauce joints. Their veal rollatini Marsala is incredible.
I would say

the chances of fans being in attendance for that September game are somewhere between 0% and 0%
I'd go to Peter Lugers

So for a guy coming to town from Texas,

y'all are offering up NYC's best steakhouses?

Have a fooking whiff of adventure and sense of what makes NYC great! Diversity, a cultural melting pot, authenticity in ethnic arts, culture, music and (most importantly) food.

Chinese, Cuban, Indian, Japanese, Italian, Greek, Turkish, Lebanese, French... Heck 20 years ago I'd say Czech and German, less so now.

For fucks'sakes don't go to a steakhouse in your 1 week or so in Manhattan, if you're coming FROM TEXAS.
Oh...

Dude actually asked specifically about steakhouses...

My bad, carry on.
My favorite steak house in the city

Its classic and amazing. Has an old school feel
Honest advice?

Cancel the trip. Our city is fucked and we don't know when it'll be back
If you want a classic NYC

experience, try to get into Minetta Tavern. Really cool part of the city, awesome food, less of a classic steakhouse and more of a unique experience.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings Bubblerjuke...

...but Aquagrill just announced that they are closing permanently. I know the owner well and he sent me a text yesterday confirming it. A real shame because they had the best oysters in town. But they had a 24-year run, which is a very long time in the NYC restaurant world.

And to the poster, if you're staying in Times Square the Palm West is a reasonably good steakhouse on W 50th Street between Broadway & 8th Ave. Steaks are good but my favorite dish there is their chicken parm. They are open for delivery or take out. Also, they have some great lunch specials from 11:00 to 3:00 - a chicken parm sandwich or pasta bolognese or a burger for $10, lobster rolls for $15 or a filet mignon for $20. If the weather is good go pick up your food and then walk over to Central Park for a picnic, because it's not clear that they'll be open for in-house dining by then.

Enjoy!
Thank you!!

I realize the timing isn’t ideal, but we are hoping things normalize enough for us to be able to take the trip.

I appreciate everyone’s input, thanks again!

is really good. It has a seafood-heavy menu and is definitely fancy and pricey but food and service was top notch.
