NFT: Favorite Kevin Costner sports movie?

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 5/25/2020 7:26 pm
Bull Durham for me, with Fields of Dreams a close second.

I thought Draft Day was atrocious.

Nuke: I want to bring the heater. Announce my presence with authority.
Crash: To announce your what?
Nuke: Announce my presence with authority!
Crash: To announce your fucking presence with authority?! This guy's a first-ball, fastball hitter, he's looking for the heat.
Well if we're talking water sports, Waterworld

is the best, by far. I’d say it’s also my favorite of the bunch too.
"Hey Dad, Wanna Have A Catch?"

The actor who played the father was so miscast. The father was supposed to be semi-pro and the guy could barely catch and throw.

Field of Dreams and it’s not close for me. I’d probably put Tin Cup next.

For the love of the game was horrendous.

Agree on Draft Day. Took an interesting movie idea and in true Hollywood fashion had to inject a stale love sub-plot to the story. Terrible writing and most of the characters are one dimensional stereotypes.

Then probably Bull Durham. I never loved Field of Dreams. Perhaps it has something to do with my ruptured relationship with my own dad; it just wasn't nostalgic for me. But, still a good and enjoyable movie. It just didn't hit that came cord with me.

I'm not sure I ever saw Stealing Home start to finish. I will have to check that one out.
Pete you threw me off with Stealing Home
Matt M. : 5/25/2020 10:42 pm : link
I didn't think he was in that one. I looked up and my initial instinct was correct. But, that is still a movie I don't remember very well.
Tin Cup

Followed closely by Bull Durham.
I kinda don't think Field of Dreams is all that great

...I know I am in the minority on that one.

Bull Durham was excellent though.

When I first saw that movie.. I thought the same thing. Then, I wondered if it was just great research on their part. It is possible they caught and threw the ball differently way back then. Those leather gloves I do not think had pockets that grabbed the ball so easily and you may have needed to use two hands.
Was there a sports movie
section125 : 5/26/2020 8:08 am : link
he wasn't good in.

Bull Durham, Field of Dreams and For the Love of the Game. As much as I really liked Tin Cup, his swing was iffy for a pro golfer.
I still get chills at

Field of Dreams

"They will come, Ray, they most certainly will come." One of the best monologues ever.
Bull Durham and by a landslide

The quotes in this flick rank amongst the all-time.

I like them all
pjcas18 : 5/26/2020 9:49 am : link
they're not great, but good, re-watchable movies.

Tin Cup maybe my favorite of them, but his non-sports movies are much better (other than the spectacular failures). Untouchables, No Way Out, Robin Hood, Open Range, even his TV work (Hatfield & McCoys and Yellowstone) are all better than any of his sports movies IMO.
Kelly Preston is so damn hot

For me...

it is easily Field Of Dreams. But who could ever forget American Flyers! What you forgot? Spoiler alert...he dies in the end.

Billy Chapel. Future HOF'r, WS ring, learned how to finesse after arm trouble, not afraid to brush guys back, stays at the Waldorf on NY road trips, rents Porsche droptops during same, ends his career with a perfect game, great ski house, asks somebody from NYC "What, I don't have enough black on?", and gets Kelly Preston.

What the F else is there in this world. Movie is the American Dream......

Yeah, I was totally wrong. It was Mark Harmon in Stealing Home (with Jodie Foster and Helen Hunt). It's also not really a "sports movie" but more of a coming-of-age drama with some baseball sprinkled in.
No votes for "Draft Day"?
DieHard : 5/26/2020 1:16 pm : link
Just kidding.

I didn't grow up with baseball and never played catch with my dad, so Field of Dreams isn't for me. Give me Bull Durham, which is still probably one of the most realistic sports movies (apart from Tim Robbins trying to throw like Fernando Valenzuela). I think Costner is at his best when he gets goofy, I wish he did more of those roles.

Haha, so true. He was perfect in that role too, just nails the Chapel character. Also, special nod to John C Reily and JK Simmons.

I'm not even a big baseball fan and yet that movie gets me into baseball. On top of that, it's about more then just baseball, it can be used as a metaphor for anyone growing old in a profession or anyone who has regrets they look back on. It's like the opposite of a coming of age movie, it's a life reflections movie.
