Casserly on S Xavier McKinney

Eric from BBI : Admin : 5/26/2020 2:34 pm
Charley Casserly @CharleyCasserly

Xavier McKinney DS @Giants 2nd rd pick. A complete Safety. Can play FS, SS & LB on 3rd down. Good instincts. Plays the run and can cover m/m. I had him rated in the 1st rd. @AlabamaFTBL @nflnetwork

can't wait to see what he can do (and how it frees up Peppers).
I will admit that i was disappointed

when they passed on Simmons at 4

but when XM fell to us and we ended up with Thomas and McKinney i feel really good about passing how the draft fell.

I thought McKinney was going to be gone in the high teens or low 20s

That skill set is a trend in most of the LBs/DBs we took. Multi-purpose, every down capable players who can run. This is a very interesting group.

Good evening, Mr & Mrs. America, and all the ships at sea...

I think Casserly's a goof, so my first inclination is to pay little heed to his opinions. However, in this instance I think he's correct. We'll see. I've said before that I would've drafted Delpit instead of McKinney, so I'm looking forward to seeing how they both progress.
Mentioned in earlier McKinney threads but

not sure how solid he is in deeper coverage looks. He didn't play that role much, if at all, at Alabama. That may be because they used him to his strengths and/or because that's a weakness.
Its McKinney for Bethea

Even if McKinney is half the hype.....the Giants are ahead of the game
He's limited athletically (short arms, small hands, mediocre speed)...

...but he's a football player. He went in the draft where a safety with his production and athletic ability should go (late 1st round, early 2nd round). And it was a position of need for the Giants, so good for them that he was still available at pick 36, but it's not like he was a steal.
Like cjac, I was hoping for Simmons but getting Xman in the 2nd

after getting Thomas in the 1st is a nice way to go.
In this case

I agree with Casserly. The pick of McKinney seems like a perfect combination of value and need for the Giants. This post got me thinking about the 2018 draft though. After it was over they asked each of the analysts their favorite pick of the draft. Casserly's response was Kyle Lauletta. He said Lauletta could have been a first round pick if he went to a school other than Richmond.
McKinney

Took over 200 snaps in the deep role, his splits were pretty even, this is a player that is going to make a difference.
I hope McKinney’s experience at multiple positions has more value
Ivan15 : 5/26/2020 9:38 pm : link
Than the experience he would have gotten playing the FS exclusively.

Gotta trust the scouts on this one.
