since actors aren't in control of the material. They're mostly hired help. They don't decide which take gets used, or which bits stay in and which bits are trimmed. Big stars have some influence on the script but hardly any of them have final cut. Maybe Tom Cruise, who tends to have a lot of control over his projects. But for the most part even the biggest stars are pretty much at the mercy of the director and the editor.
But I can tell you that Michelle Williams has a knack for picking indie dramas. A lot of the films she's in end up being contenders for big awards, especially for screenplay awards. So if she's in an indie drama, I'm pretty confident it's going to be worth watching.
If you like that sort of thing, her involvement tends to be a quality mark.
Not always true. Take Scorsese for example. He lets his actors create on the fly in some cases. The chest chanting scene in Wolf of Wallstreet was something Leo saw McConaughey doing to prep for his scenes and said he should add it in at the end of the take. They took it and ran with it.
Great actors pick great roles and great directors will give some creative leeway, or a lot in some cases.
In terms of the OP i'll always watch Daniel Day Lewis, DiCaprio, Denzel or Joaquin Phoenix, plenty of others as well.
Actresses I'm all about Amy Adams or Jessica Chastain.
but I've been obsessed lately with Al Pacino's crazy run of movies in the 1970s - Godfather, Serpico, Godfather II, Dog Day Afternoon, And Justice For All, etc. Those movies are like watching a legendary athlete in his prime.
Also have a celebrity crush on Mary-Louise Parker, whose work is mostly TV/theater, but I always enjoy any work of hers I can find (Weeds and Angels in America come to mind).
If you like Pacino, watch the Hunters on Amazon streaming.....pretty good IMO.
Besides the girl-movies every movie he is in is great.
He really is an underrated actor. I was just watching "The Nice Guys" again recently and he's just so damn good in it. It's crazy how much I enjoyed both that movie and "Drive" yet he plays completely different characters. Crowe was also good in "The Nice Guys" and is another actor that comes to mind with a ton of great movies.
I know he's pretty much the same guy in most movies, but I've always liked Jason Statham movies. Just like the Liam Neeson movies, it's fun to turn your brain off and enjoy a pure action flick. Plus he was great in "Snatch" which is one of my favorites.
but In find Bill Murray timeless. And I just re-watched one of my childhood favorites, Meatballs, for the first time in decades and loved it.
I also like Cruise and can watch a lot of his stuff at any time, even if formulaic. He does great action and does his own stunts.
I can always watch Hanks.
On the female side, I love Pfeiffer at any age, Streep, Allison Janney (more of a supporting role), Mirren, Blanchett, Emma Thompson, Julianne Moore. I used to love Julia Roberts, buut can't stand a lot of her more recent work.
DiCaprio is a great actor who also gets great roles. There is a reason he keeps getting work with some of the best Directors of this generation in Tarantino, Spielberg, Scorsese and Christopher Nolan.
Greatest actor of all time, in my opinion, male or female.
I watch her and cannot believe anyone can be so good at anything. She's the Beatles, the Shakespeare, of acting in my opinion.
21 Oscar nominations...yes, you read that right. Three wins.
She's so good in "Postcards From the Edge," it's frightening....
My 2 cents...
I agree and it is really a crime that she only won 3 times. Too many times she gets passed over because she has 3 in the bag and that often dissuades voters when there is another compelling option, especially a first time winner. But, she easily could/should have won at least 10. Early in her career I marvelled how she could completely immerse in a new accent ivrtually each year. Now, I can appreciate even more. She can completely transform, even still. She has movies now where she completely looks and acts whatever part she has regardless of age, look, circumstance, etc. With every role, she just absolutely is that person. I can watch her any time.
Daniel Day Lewis is fucking fantastic and probably the best actor in recent memory...too bad he is super picky with scripts.
Streep is also the best female actress arguably of all time.
