Fun mystery solved from 1990 season- OJ fake flea flicker

Matt in SGS : 5/27/2020 4:10 pm
So in the midst of all my boredom being at home, I've taken a bunch of the various clips that I have made for the old game reviews and have been putting them out on twitter.

Anyway, back in 1990, there was a play in the home game vs. the Cardinals, which was better known as the one where Simms got hurt and Hoss came off the bench to lead a late comeback, down 19-10 and ended with a Matt Bahr field goal at the gun to win 20-19. On this play, OJ Anderson was given a handoff and looked ready to flip back to Hoss on a flea flicker. But rather than send it back, he held it, and took off running for a 20 yard gain. It looked like either a broken play or a planned fake flea flicker. On the video, you hear the announcer, Merlin Olson actually say he'd never seen a fake flea flicker before. So for years, I had wondered if this was planned or OJ just made a head's up play. Keep in mind, one of the reasons that Joe Thiesmann had LT break his leg came on a flea flicker. On that play, Riggins sent the ball back to Thiesmann, who had Harry Carson barrel in on him and he was able to get away from Carson, but that forced him to hold the ball just long enough for LT to lunge and change the course of NFL history.

OJ saw something similar with Cardinals coming in on Hoss, and held the ball and ran it up the middle for a nice gain. Anway, I put the question out on Twitter a couple of days ago and tagged OJ:

Inquiring minds want to know. In 1990, the #NYGiants beat the Cardinals on a late Matt Bahr FG with Hoss coming in to replace an injured Simms. Before that
@OJAnderson24
ran this play. Planned fake flea flicker or a head's up play? Garrett needs to add this to the playbook

And today I got my answer:

Heads up play!

So there you have it, for those bored few who were wondering this, or even thought about it, an answer to old mini mystery from 1990.

I can't imagine this play working...
BamaBlue : 5/27/2020 4:35 pm : link
sort of like the probability of the Giants successfully running a draw play on 3d and long...
That's awesome!

And a nice trip down memory lane. That was a great season for sure. Also nice was the Giants pulling out games unexpectedly - seems like forever since we've had a team able to do that. That '90 team did it repeatedly all year and through the playoffs through SF in the NFCC and SB vs Buffalo
Great stuff

He was always one of my favorites.
And remember, at 33 OJ was considered well past prime
KeoweeFan : 5/27/2020 5:19 pm : link
and the Giants were looking for a backup and mentor for the RBs which in 1990 included Hampton, Meggett, Tillman with Lee Rousson and Carthon at FB!
If he tossed that back to Hoss,
BH28 : 5/27/2020 5:59 pm : link
Hoss would have been destroyed. Definitely a good call by OJ.
And Hoss was crazy courageous!!
Chris in San Diego : 5/27/2020 6:17 pm : link
He would get dead planted...then get up n dust himself off...
I met OJ about 10 years or so ago.

Great guy. Very accommodating. I told him I loved his Ali like style punch to Kelso in Super Bowl XXV. His response: 'Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.' Great response.
Nice

I can see Barkley running that play for a TD

I loved OJ but he was a plodder at that point in his career. Thats what Parcells did best and taught BB, take a guy that is at the end of his career and use him effectively. Hopefully Judge is able to utilize his players that way.
great find and catch, Matt

also on that twitter thread, there is this gem from Eli, responding to a Shaun Ohara golf charity note:

I am sorry you could not hold your annual Charity Golf Event this year. What a great cause. I will miss watching you hit at least 25 golf balls in the water on the Par 3.

He's bringing the jabs on twittah.

Cool, thanks, the mentions are going nuts so I see it. Slight payback for when I blew up your feed on Daniel Jones draft night, lol.

You've got some of my favorite stuff in there... you know I love that '84 KC game. Also, I haven't seen that Meggett play in Denver in decades other than the highlight tape.

Do you have the '84 Giants-Cowboys game at the Meadowlands. If so, you should post the Headen TD and the Byron Williams long TD run. That's something I'd like to see!

Yup, I have it. I'll post it in the next day or so.
Thanks!!!

bumping this up for you Eric. I just posted the highlight of Headen's TD vs. Dallas. Headen's speed is amazing, and he was a backup.

that fumble recovery play against Dallas
djm : 5/29/2020 11:07 am : link
was my favorite play ever in any sport for a long long long time. I got a lot of mileage out of that play as a 12 year old NYG fan that fucking despised Dallas on a unhealthy level. My closest friend and I used to parrot that Buck call over and over and over. 1984 was so sweet for me. Even more than 81 as I was older and my connected to the team. 81 was special don't get me wrong, but 84 was when I truly became obsessed with the Giants and relished beating dallas.
JAck Buck really was the best
djm : 5/29/2020 11:11 am : link
if i ever got into broadcasting, i'd model myself after Buck. "Oh the blitz..."

I was so happy after that game. 2-0. in the East. 2-0 against Philly and Dallas. We were on our way. 81 was the end of losing, but 84 was the start of greatness.
thanks for completely ruining any chance of work productivity today
