The Eagles squeezed the last ounce of production out of him and left him to the Giants and Cowboys. Very similar situation to Jim Thorpe when he became a Giant... Great name, great player in his prime, but came to NY with a fork in his back.
which I guess, by definition, means nothing memorable.
Mostly I remember being mad in '86 that the Giants passed on the chance to draft him and the Cowboys got him. He seemed to beat the Giants by himself on opening night. I remember ranting to my father that the Giants could have had the draft rights to walker but nooooo, they had to have Tyrone Davis. (You can look him up.) AND THIS IS WHY THEY WOULD NEVER WIN A SUPER BOWL.
The next few months taught me to calm down and shut up about "never." It was a good lesson.
but I dont remember the exact game but he caught a backside screen pass once and had one man to beat for a long touchdown...he jokes and was taken down with no gain. That sums his giants career up
But he never stopped hustling. I remember we had a long kickoff return and the replay highlighted Herschel's...blocking. Was odd to see him go from superstar to grunt, but he did it (seemingly) without complaint.
I remember being aggravated that he'd never take a handoff and just GO
Was at a Blockbusters getting a movie and he was directly in front of me. Built like a tank but I actually was a bit surprised that he was not taller and bigger due to the way he played. Nice guy and was very polite
good guy and played hard, but overall i thought he was
But there was an event in the early 80's where the NJ Generals met with Children with Muscular Dystrophy. My wheelchair-bound cousin Eddie arrived very late, by that time all the NJ General Players had left except one who waited for the late kid.
Walker played FB for the Giants as we featured Hampton at HB. Walker caught about 40 passes out of the backfield and played well on special teams as both a returner and a blocker. He was no longer a superstar, but accepted his role as a supporting player.
I loved Herschel from his Generals days and between signing him, drafting Wheatley to go with Hampton, and coming off the 6-game win streak to end 94, I was so excited for that 95 team thinking they could do some good things.
Then 35-0 on Monday Night to Dallas at home and that was that. Hugely disappointing season.

Actually perfect comparison.
Then one day my dad told me how much he sucked... never looked at Giants Herschel the same again!
Thomas Lewis was our speedster. Herschel Walker was an "old running back."
Watch Herschel Walker during this Thomas Lewis kickoff return...
Fantastic hustle and block... - ( New Window )
Too lazy to check.

That was probably the entire Thomas Lewis career highlight reel right there...
What a disappointment

As Larry Czonka as a Giant.
Actually perfect comparison.
Rueben Droughns is a better comparison, I think. By the time he got here Walker was a useful ST player, but no longer really a RB.

Larry Czonka had much more left in the tank than Hershel. Czonka played on a very shitty team

And Brian Mitchell.
