NFT: At Home workout equipment suggestions

Giantimistic : 5/28/2020 7:43 am
So I have at home a simple bike and non electronic stepper. I am really interested in getting a rowing machine. There seems to be quite a lot to choose from ranging from affordable to very expensive.

Anyone have experience with any of these—I don’t need a screen experience and want to be able to move it or stand it upright when not in use.

Any other things you use at home you suggest?
Concept 2 is the gold standard

And hold their value really well but good luck getting one now. All sold out and used ones are selling at a premium
Concept 2

Another vote. They really are the gold standard and can be repaired pretty easily if anything did go wrong. Should last indefinitely for home use.
Forgot to mention

For cardio, just taking walks with a weighted vest is good low impact work I will do of off days. To turn it into a good workout, walk a set distance, do 10-20 walking lunges, continue for x total distance. I usually do ~1 mile, 20 walking lunges ever .1 mile with a 40lb vest.

Weighted sled drags for time or distance is great too. Different sleds are available for grass or asphalt. Only problem here is that your neighbors will think you are crazy.

Both of these options are cheap and very effective, and get you outdoors. My weight vest was a cheaper one and is bulky, and my sled is home made from a tire.

Interesting question
GFiLA : 5/28/2020 9:59 am : link
I have dealt with this question for years. I think that I finally have the best setup for someone that is not looking to bulk up but to stay or get in shape. The core of my system is the Inspire functional trainer. When combined with a set of power blocks and you can address all, the major muscle groups. I like the power blocks better then the iron master, (which I also owned) because the power blocks are easier to change weights. The functional trainer was a game changer on my home physical fitness journey.
As for cardio I did a bunch of research on rowers and found that the best one is a water rower followed closely the Concept 2. They have different feels so it would be better to try them before buying. While rowing is a great workout it just did not draw me to doing it over the long term. I find that the best cardio is really the one that you want to do.
Concept 2

I've been a competitive rower since the mid-80s, and have trained on my Concept 2 regularly since the mid-90s. It needs only minor maintenance from time to time, and still works great with millions of meters on it.
As was stated

It looks like all the concept2 are out of stock! I want to get something soon. Is there any other machines comparable or close or good budget ones to get until I can get the concept.

My personal opinion on the low-budget machines is not high; you'd be buying junk. Comparable machines to the Concept 2 are relatively high-budget - the WaterRower and Hydrow.

I've no experience with Nordic Track or LifeSpan for instance (gym-type machines) but none of them look inexpensive, and folks who row seriously don't use them either, just fyi.

You might consider waiting on the rowing machine until you can get something you have confidence in.

depends on your goals and limitations... you can do a lot with just your body weight (calisthenics)
Love TRX bands

Anyone have any feedback with Bowflex m6 thru current model

Seems real smooth when I tested it out at fitness store
Have chronic hip bursitis issues so cannot run anymore for HIIT training
Have basic bike and low end elliptical but want something I can go next level
Price point isn’t cheap. 2-3k But even when gyms open in CA, plan on going less and for shorter duration , more as an add on to what I can’t get at home
Living in a NYC apartment..

I don't have room for a rowing machine or functional trainer or Nordik Trac, which I used to have and like when I lived in a much bigger place (pre-divorce). So I've been doing a lot of floor exercises like push-ups, crunches, leg lifts, planks, etc. That got boring, though, and didn't provide any variation on the muscles I was working, so about a week ago I got a set of resistance bands to vary my workouts and I've really found that you can use them to do a lot of different things. Plus they are relatively inexpensive. My set ran me $40 and I'm happy with them.

if you can even find bowlflex selecttech dumbbells right now, they are asking an arm and a leg for them.
I got the 9 in 1 push-up pad. The grip is awesome.
Gmen1982 : 5/28/2020 7:47 pm : link
Also a pull-up bar and resistance bands. I get great workouts now.

Thank you for your input. The wood WaterRower at least looks very cool.
I can not comment on rowing

I can comment and support the resistance bands. I would suggest watching a few of James Grages videos on Youtube. H provides some very practical advice. I learned a bit late for myself; when doing shoulder presses pre-tension the band. IE: squat down and then stand up with the handle raised to you shoulder. The legs do the work to put tension on the band rather than you shoulder doing it in an awkward motion

Below is a link to another guy I follow and do these work outs. They are effective, I would suggest, again, listening to James. Here is a link to his Youtube page.
