Of all the has-been/over-the-hill LBers that we've acquired,

Anakim : 5/30/2020 12:27 pm
Who were you most excited for?

Options include:

Aaron Curry
Keith Rivers
Lavar Arrington
Keith Bulluck
Jameel McClain

I don't think guys like Carlos Emmons and Barrett Green qualify as they were playing at high levels when we signed them
And of course never wases
Anakim : 5/30/2020 12:31 pm : link
Which is what many of those linebackers were as pros
Arrington
BlueLou'sBack : 5/30/2020 12:34 pm : link
by a mile.
Arrington.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 5/30/2020 12:39 pm : link
& it's not even close. Man was the second overall pick & an All Pro.
Arrington
Osi Osi Osi OyOyOy : 5/30/2020 12:49 pm : link
Looking at his career stats, 23.5 career sacks? That's incredible. I would've guessed closer to 50.

He was terrible for us in every game except for the game he got hurt against the Cowboys. I'll never forget thinking "holy shit, he's actually looking healthy and making an impact" in that game, only for him to get injured shortly after. It was like his body couldn't handle playing at a high level anymore.

I was excited for Rivers too, because of his speed.

wasn't the cowboy game
CMicks3110 : 5/30/2020 12:59 pm : link
only his 2nd game with us?
Barrett Green another NYG career ended by injuries
BillT : 5/30/2020 1:01 pm : link
After becoming a very good player for Detroit he came here as a FA if I remember. Only played in 10 games his first year (injured I assume) and suffered a career ending injury in the 1st game of his 2nd season with us. Another in the long list.
Arrington for sure
bluepepper : 5/30/2020 1:06 pm : link
had injuries of course but had hope he would get pat that. And that 2006 team was looking real good at one point. Then Lavar, Osi and Strahan went down.

Another guy to add to the list: Jon Beason.
I was really excited about
eric2425ny : 5/30/2020 1:29 pm : link
Arrington. Was also expecting solid play from Rivers and Bulluck.
Matt Hazeltine
aquidneck : 5/30/2020 1:37 pm : link
Hazeltine was a 37 year old former San Francisco 49er all pro who came out of retirement to play one season for the 1970 New York Giants.

Hazeltine and Ralph Heck (who the Giants got from the Packers in the Francis Peay deal) were the steady veterans flanking either side of first round rookie MLB Jim Files.

The Giants finished 9-5, but Hazeltine and Files too would last only one year if I'm remembering right. Files retiring to pursue a career in the clergy.

1970 and 1972 when the Giants finished 8-6 were the only winning seasons between 1964 and the Ray Perkins era.

Arrington and Bullock
GiantsFan84 : 5/30/2020 1:47 pm : link
I didn't realize how washed bullock was. that was disappointing to me

Arrington though. He was finally starting to get healthy and was dominant in that dallas game before the achillies injury. that was one of the most disappointing injuries i felt as a giants fan. he was an incredibly easy to like player
I didn't think Curry or McClain were over the hlll but still pick
Ivan15 : 5/30/2020 2:02 pm : link
Arrington, hands down.
Throw
Toth029 : 5/30/2020 2:02 pm : link
One into the ring.

Jon Beason.

Yeah, he was washed by this point too but he was still solid and could lead a defense. Step above Blackburn, and has been the best ILB this team has had since Pierce left.

I remember thinking we got Beason for a steal at the time. Thought he had atleast 2-3 years of high quality football left. Boy was I wrong.
Emmons and Green were rather healthy
Big Blue '56 : 5/30/2020 2:33 pm : link
when we signed them. Then of course they became injured

Good call here.

Beason

Think it was a few games in. That was the game when Romo replaced Bledsoe.

Forgot about Beason
Arrington had some promise
David B. : 5/30/2020 3:18 pm : link
But you'd have been foolish to have been truly expecting much. He hadn't lived up to his hype, and WSH was letting him walk. It's not like he had been a star. He was a JAG. You take a flyer and hope a change of scenery gets a guy going. But most of the time it doesn't.

They've had better luck with lesser name LBs like Kawika Mitchell and Johnnie Cooks who came in with less fanfare and played well.
Mike Croel
LeonBright45 : 5/30/2020 3:35 pm : link
4th pick in the 1991 NFL Draft and NFL Defensive ROY
None of them
Torrag : 5/30/2020 4:10 pm : link
I thought they were all cooked at the time of acquisition.

I was hopeful Keith Rivers could rebound
Greg from LI : 5/30/2020 5:28 pm : link
Nope
It's amazing how many below average LB's we've had over the
Dave in Hoboken : 5/30/2020 5:32 pm : link
past 2 decades or so. Unless I'm forgetting someone (which is possible, 20 years is along time), I think Antonio Pierce is the best LB we've had over the past 20 years. I love Pierce, but he shouldn't be the best LB a team has had in a 20 year time period. Especially a team that has been built on defense and is rich in LB history.

Barrow was pretty good until the last year.
Best ever was
WideRight : 5/30/2020 9:54 pm : link

Kawika Mitchell

You could argue that he wasn't "washed up", but the Giants got him on a one year deal because mo one else wanted him, and he was a great contributor to the '07 Super Bowl defense
McClain
MtDizzle : 5/31/2020 7:44 am : link
more like a never was. Arrington I was the most excited for by far. Aaron Curry a close second.
They were toast
Giant John : 5/31/2020 7:46 am : link
Befotr they came to Giants.
......
CoughlinHandsonHips : 5/31/2020 9:08 am : link
Obviously not what Anak was asking about...

But man, we almost had one in Johnathan Goff before he tore an ACL

Definitely Arrington....
Kev in Cali : 5/31/2020 5:23 pm : link
Arrington had the most hype coming on. Jon Beason had a good amount of hype, but was coming off serious injury....although, Beason had a good amount of "leadership" qualities that the team desperately needed at the time.
I think I can honestly say
81_Great_Dane : 5/31/2020 9:41 pm : link
"none of them." None of them excited me. Honestly, I hardly ever get excited by a free-agent signing.
