Former Giants News

Albrizio TAP: Super Bowl Champion, Former New York Giant Leonard Marshall Named CarePlus Foundation's Honorary Trustee

“In 2013, Marshall was diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a degenerative brain disease commonly found in those with a history of repetitive brain trauma, participating in contact sports such as ice hockey, boxing, rugby and wrestling. Sufferers don't experience the onset of symptoms until years after their injuries. These can range from behavioral problems, mood problems to and problems with thinking. The disease worsens over time and can cause dementia -- a chronic disorder of the mental processes caused by either brain disease or injury. It is marked by memory disorders, personality changes and impaired reasoning.

Following his diagnosis with CTE seven years ago, Marshall quickly became an advocate for the disease and continues to be involved in efforts to raise awareness. In recognition of his advocacy and philanthropic support of the organization, Marshall was honored at the Foundation’s Annual Courage Awards Gala in 2016.

Finley Chicago Sun Times: Former Bears safety Roosevelt Taylor dies at 82

“He attended Grambling University — now Grambling State — where he was cut by the basketball team twice, walked onto the football team and became a star. In 1960, he helped lead the Tigers and legendary coach Eddie Robinson to the school’s first-ever SWAC championship. The Bears signed him as undrafted free agent the next year.

Taylor, who played for the Bears from 1961-69, was at his best during the championship season. He led the NFL with nine interceptions — at the time, a Bears record — and added an additional three takeaways on fumble recoveries, in 1963. Three of those interceptions came against the Packers alone. He returned an interception against the 49ers for a 30-yard touchdown — one of the three pick-sixes he’d total in his Bears career — in the second-to-last week of the season.
The 11-1-2 Bears won all eight games in which he picked off a pass during the 1963 season. He was named a first-team all-pro by four groups, including the Associated Press, and made his first Pro Bowl.
Taylor was named a second-team all-pro in each of the next two seasons. In 1968, he reached his second Pro Bowl. Midway through the next season, the Bears traded him and a fifth-round pick to the 49ers for guard Howard Mudd.

He spent two-and-a-half years in San Francisco and his last season, in 1972, with the Redskins. He started at free safety for Washington in Super Bowl VII. Their 14-7 loss to the undefeated Dolphins was the last game of Taylor’s 13-year career.

He never missed a game with the Bears, playing all 118 contests over eight-and-a-half years. Twenty-three of his 32 career interceptions came playing for the franchise.

Judge SI.com: The best Chiefs NOT in Canton and why they deserve to be there
https://www.si.com/nfl/talkoffame/nfl/the-kansas-city-chiefs-who-belong-in-canton

Dan Daly: Many an NFL QB, has struggled at the beginning -- even the HOFers. So you have to appreciate what Norm Van Brocklin did in his 1949 debut. After throwing *1* pass in the preseason, he came off the bench in the 4th Q of the opener & passed the #Rams 76 yards to tie the game.

The Rams offense was unbelievable in those days. In that game alone you had a HOF QB (Bob Waterfield) throwing a TD pass to a HOF receiver (Tom Fears) and a 2nd HOF QB (Van Brocklin) throwing a TD pass to a 2nd HOF receiver (Elroy Hirsch)

As for Bob Shaw, their Other Receiver, he still shares the NFL record with 5 TD catches in a game (with the Cardinals the next season). The most he had with the Rams was 4. In fact, in the space of 3 games -- 1949 finale & 2nd game of '50 -- he had a 4-TD game and a 5-TD game

Just noticed this: Another receiver on that 1949 Rams team was Don Currivan. It was the last season of his career, but 2 years earlier with the Boston Yanks he'd averaged 32.58 yards a catch -- an #NFL record that *still* stands

“He was a 1946 graduate of Pampa High School, where he was an All-State Halfback, was on the All-State Basketball Team, was State Champion at Discus, and was inducted into the Texas High School Hall of Fame and was the 78th inductee of the Texas Panhandle Hall of Fame. He was awarded an athletic scholarship to the University of Texas in Austin, in football and track, where he was selected as an All-American in football and was a member of the Letterman Association. A 1950 graduate, he was inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Honor in 1977.
He was a third round NFL draft pick and joined the New York Giants in 1950. He continued enjoying sports for many years as a football official, officiating for 30 years in numerous high school and College Bowl games. He served in the Army and was stationed at Brooke Medical Center from 1951-52.”

Randy Clay the second half of the year starts at right corner on defense and gains 101 yards rushing on just 14 carries in the Polo Grounds against the Eagles in a key victory

http://nflfootballjournal.blogspot.com/2018/04/theres-rhubard-out-there-nyg-50.html

12-10-1950 Giants 9 Eagles 7

Randy Clay filling in for the injured Ray Poole who broke his ankle on the first play of the game kicked a 15 yard FG to open the Giants scoring. Later in the first quarter Bob McChesney caught a 5 yard scoring pass from Charlie Conerly. The Eagles cut the lead to 9-7 on a Tommy Thompson TD pass covering 36 yards to Jim Parmer. After halftime there was no more scoring as the day grew dark and bitterly cold producing snow and forcing the second half to be played under the lights. The Eagles thought they took the lead when tackle Jay MacDowell picked up a Giants fumble and ran 79 yards for an apparent touchdown in the third quarter. But referee Emil Heintz called clipping on the Eagles forcing the ball to be brought back. After the game the police had to rescue him from fans who stopped him in the runway to the dressing room. Feelings also were heated during the game as there were several fist throwing incidents. FB Eddie Price rushed for 103 yards for the visiting Giants.

The win kept the Giants tied with the Cleveland Browns, they will meet in a playoff next week to determine the NFL Eastern division winner.

Giants Sign Clay to 1953 Grid Pact: “The New York Giants of the National Football League today signec Randy Clay, a 24-year-old haM back, .to a 1953 contract. A graduate of the University of Texas, Clay is in the Army,
before the start of next season. He played with the Giants- in 1950.”

John Kirby LB W-MIN 1969 NYG 1969-1970 Born 5-30-1942 Died

The Giants acquired Kirby on waivers from Minnesota during the 1969 season. He had been the Vikings 4th linebacker the previous 5 seasons. When Henry Davis was injured, Kirby became a starting left outside linebacker and held onto the job because of in the words of defensive coach Norb Hecker "he has been playing good steady ball for us."
He entered preseason in 1970 as the starting LLB and intercepted a pass in the Giants' preseason win over the Jets.

However he was replaced by Ralph Heck as the starter before the season began. He played in all 14 games on special teams in 1970 and was waived prior to the 1971 season.
