NFT: Just got a dog - DNA testing question

Tuckrule : 5/31/2020 8:02 am
Just adopted a mix breed dog. She looks to be part lab and part Shepard. I know bbi has a big group of dog enthusiasts. I would like to find out the breed would anyone have a good recommendation for a DNA test. Thanks in advance. By the way the name of our new girl is Barkley :)
Love it!

Thanks for adopting.
Our dog was adopted seven years ago.

We asked he vet about a DNA test and she said they are not always accurate. Technology may have (probably) has improved since, but we never went ahead with it. At the end of the day it didn't matter.

Have fun with your dog!

Thanks and very true. I guess it’s for peace of mind but your right, at the end of the day (antrel rolle), it doesn’t matter.
Congrats!!

As mentioned, it doesn't really matter. BUT, it is fun and interesting to know. We adopted our Lucia about two years ago, and she was marketed to us as a Basset Hound / Lab mix. We got a DNA test, and she was far from that (lol) -- 37.5% Staffordshire Terrior, 25% Chihuahua, 12.5% Lab, 12.5% Boxer, 12.5% Rottweiler. We were excited that it came back 100% identifiable, I have friends that got results back and it said 50% unidentifiable - so you do run that risk. Good luck!
Wisdom Panel - ( New Window )
Forgot to mention that I used Wisdom Panel

our dog was listed as a Black Lab/Corgi mix. DNA says 50% Staffordshire Terrier, 12.5% Rottweiler, 12.5% Chow Chow, 12.5% Mastiff, 12.5% undetected.
We have Carolina Rescue

Looks like a chocolate lab. Testing confirmed one parent was purebred chocolate lab and other parent was a Heinz 57, with percentage possibilities of 6 or 7 breeds.

So we don't know anything that we didn't know before testing.

Conclusion. She's a brown dog. Sweet and friendly... and dumber than a box of rocks.
Lol

Pretty much describes the Choc Lab part. We had a pure bred. Very loving but short on brainwaves.
We did Wisdom Panel too...

My kids got a huge kick out of it. Finn turned out to be 25% Lab and a mixture of a bunch of other breeds. Is it accurate? I don’t really care, I guess. Seems like it. And the health screen came back clean.
I can save you some money

it is fun. our dog is a rescue and her results were not at all what we expected but now watching her behavior we can see it. she looks like a collie but has no collie in her. she does have beagle and she acts a lot like a beagle.
Definitely Wisdom Panel

I used it on my 2 rescues to see what the hell they are haha. Very easy and quick turnaround. Available on Amazon!

I've done some research regarding this very topic as I run the only 24 hour Pet Rescue/Pet Welfare Internet radio station in the nation and Wisdom Panel is a good choice and relatively inexpensive but you should also consider EMBARK DNA testing as well. It may be more expensive but is has more breeds in their data base and the more breeds, the more accurate. They also have a really cool feature where they offer a family tree data base so if someone has adopted a sibling and are near by and have registered they will be able to match it. It's a nice feature as this could establish a nice find and create playdates for your pup.
I'm so happy you decided to rescue a pet and the best of Luck!
