Vacchiano: HOFers Calling Darnay Holmes Sleeper of the Draft

Eric from BBI : Admin : 6/1/2020 12:13 am
I know, some of you guys hate these hype articles, but hey, if you can't get excited after the draft, then when can you?
Why NFL Hall of Famers are calling this Giants rookie 'the sleeper in the draft' - ( New Window )

...because hey remind of the Reese drafts where he and Ross would crow about all the 1st round talents they drafted.

If Holmes is a contributor as a rookie I'll be happy. I don't need him to be a steel or a sleeper or whatever.
So, Jordan writes this on the 28 and Ralph regurgitates it on the 31?

We Need Slot Corner
Samiam : 6/1/2020 8:30 am : link
I think lots of people were underestimating how much of a need slot corner is. They must have really liked Holmes given how everybody knows they need a center and they passed a few names in the draft at center in the 4th round

You make sense, per usual
Slot may be his best position given his height
GeofromNJ : 6/1/2020 8:48 am : link
5'10" according to UCLA website.
Every player who was ever drafted
John In CO : 6/1/2020 8:59 am : link
and busted/failed probably had someone in his corner pre-draft and pre-camp touting him as either a cant miss or an overlooked talent, etc.... thats why players are drafted. Somebody sees something. Doesnt always work out. So no, this kind of stuff really means nothing to me.

I will say, however, that EVERYTHING that I have seen written about this kids character off the field has me really hoping that in this case the hype is real. If nothing else, I dont think effort is gonna be an issue.

Amen. I think we all agree slot receivers and tight ends have been killing us over the middle for years. The pick makes all the sense in the world through that lense

Hope this kid proves to be as good as advertised

Cant get exited during the season.... at least not the last 3.

This isn’t Reese and Ross raving about how great they did. There are analysts and HOF DB’s that are praising the pick. They have no incentive to do so.

As mentioned above the slot CB spot was the second biggest hole on the defense after edge rusher. Holmes has the skill set to thrive there. The Giants will likely use McKinney and Love in the slot as well.
I thInk people make too much of his size
BillT : 6/1/2020 12:53 pm : link
Yes, 5’ 10” is a bit short but he's 195 and that’s perfectly good size for a CB. I think slot makes sense but he may be more versatile than many think.
Assuming Baker is freed and in camp on time, hopefully not suspended
SGMen : 6/1/2020 1:26 pm : link
for very long, our secondary has some real, solid potential.

I like Holmes but until the pads are on and the games are real you just don't know.

I'm praying we have 3 new starters on the offensive line from this draft by season's end (as in they step up and get playing time so we know what we have for 2021 and beyond); I pray we have two starters for our secondary in McKinney and Holmes (slot play a lot); and, I pray we hit on some LB's who drafted 5th & later. I'm a FAN and can't think otherwise! LOL.
The thing about Baker is not just his availability but,
Del Shofner : 6/1/2020 1:40 pm : link
after reading everything about him following his arrest, he just seems like an idiot and a guy who doesn't work hard at the game of football.

Hopefully the arrest will be a wakeup call for him but my expectation that he would be a good starting NFL corner has been diminished.

This, Barring injury I expect the week one starters at CB to be Bradberry and Beal with Holmes in the slot. This coaching staff is not going to start Baker unless he dedicates himself moving forward.

It is very concerning that this kid skipped all voluntary meetings this offseason. I pray that this incident will be the wake up call that he needed but I’m not very hopeful.

Baker is a bonehead and a liability until he proves otherwise. I trust Judge to not give a flying fudge about draft round or salary when it comes to playing time or even a roster spot, especially for guys he inherited.
Missing Meetings
Samiam : 6/1/2020 2:51 pm : link
I’ve read that Baker did not miss all the voluntary meetings, that he did participate in some of the virtual meetings. Plus, the key word is voluntary. Not going is worrisome but not fatal assuming he doesn’t have end up in prison or suspension.

But, the point was made that barring injury, one of our starting corners is Beal. In the time he’s been here, he’s been injured probably 90% of the time. Although he looks like he’s got serious talent, counting on him until he proves he can stay healthy is a major risk. We better hope Baker is ready for the start of the season.

Dr. D : 6/1/2020 3:25 pm : link
seems to me, a motivated young player with a good work ethic isn't going to blow off "voluntary" meetings with a new coaching staff (especially after struggling in his rookie season). That clown has a lot to prove.

Don't like these types of articles but since we did not get a rookie mini camp to see these guys in action on the field this all we have to work with to get us excited about the up coming season.
He has one of the best highlight films ..

He has special body control.
I'll never get what you see Manny.
BlueLou'sBack : 6/2/2020 1:47 am : link
Agree of course that's an excellent highlight reel, but I'm far more impressed with his power, quickness, and long speed than his body control evidenced therein.

Determination, too. He's a fighter, a really competitive bastid.

Looks like the "type" Judge wants, similar in attitude to Lemieux.

I guess after round 3, a team wisely emphasizes attitude over strictly aptitude, since most of the really prized rare athletic specimens are gone by about slot 100.

He has jets though, NFL level wheels as his sub 4.5 40 indicated.
Also like in that brief highlight reel
BlueLou'sBack : 6/2/2020 1:57 am : link
he competed well against much bigger receivers Arcega-Whiteside (6'2", 225#) and N'Keal Harry (6'3", 228#), both of whom were noted to have large catch radii and be very strong 50/50 type receivers...

Holmes is shortish with short arms, but he's a dog. At least in that video.
I'll be the party pooper
allstarjim : 6/2/2020 10:19 am : link
He gave up 3, maybe 4 TDs vs Washington State.

Now, it's not all bad. But just showing his good plays only creates a false sense of what he is as a prospect.

From everything I've read, he does have the mindset, attitude, and work ethic to grind and get the most out of himself. If we have that, then I think it's a great pick.

But he's going to struggle as a rookie. He's going to make mistakes and give up big plays, and some of you a year from now are going to say how much he sucked. He's not an elite talent that is going to blow the doors off day 1. So he's going to have to do it the hard way.

I like him, I'm optimistic, but I'm not expecting much year 1, and actually hoping he's NOT our starting nickel week 1.

Jim you know Holmes played through injuries in 2019,
BlueLou'sBack : 6/2/2020 11:17 am : link
right? Vs Wash St. was their 4th game of the season, perhaps right around when Holmes' injury was at its worst?

He looks a step or more slower on that tape compared with others.

Just sayin'. Jim Nagy noted that based on his 2019 tape he wasn't going to invite him to the Senior Bowl, but league scouts and other personnel evaluators insist he look at his 2018 tape. Nagy said that was another thing altogether.
Holmes has

skillset to play the slot.I expect him to be opening slot corner.

There are two sick moments in that reel. Look at the mirroring and movement on the line at 0.55. The receiver never had a chance. That is classic Richard Sherman mirroring right there.

The play at 0.25 says everything you need to know. Never gives up, closes from behind and makes a seriously heads up play to punch out the ball while trailing the runner. Domminque Cromartie anyone? That's simply footballing at its best. Sure he's had his share of gaffs but you can't teach that kind of grit, speed and determination.
