strong safety

Hilary : 6/1/2020 6:17 am
Should Love be competing for slot corner, Baker's position or competing with Peppers ? I am a Michigan fan,so I like to see Peppers succeed but having two safeties with good coverage skills (Love and Mickinney) would be a big change for the defense.

I think Graham will love using Peppers as that nickle Lber
George from PA : 6/1/2020 6:27 am : link
Also, expect 3 safeties to play alot....

I think Love plays more safety then corner...being a smart player will be a big advantage for him....multiple!
I prefer McKinney at slot in base situations

Someone more multiple.
It'll be nice having a young player like Love who can play both safety
Ira : 6/1/2020 7:04 am : link
and corner. And Judge and Graham are just the coaches to make use of that.

Likely Holmes will be slot and McKinney FS in base. Think there will be a lot of mix and match.
If there's a concern...
mittenedman : 6/1/2020 7:15 am : link
...it's that the Giants have compiled 3 SS's - as they did last year with Peppers, Bethea & Love.

Seems like a ridiculous oversight - as it does Edge Rusher.

If McKinney can play FS, I like Love at SS and Peppers as a jack-knife, attacking the ball.
Are we really counting on Beal
JFIB : 6/1/2020 7:57 am : link
Starting opposite Bradberry in base packages? That's a little scary. It's probably a safe bet that Baker won't be playing so I guess it's either Beal or Ballentine. Which do you guys prefer?

But out of that group of "SS", one was a free safety the majority of his career and signed to be a FS. One was a CB in college and was converting to Safety and is best suited for the FS position, and one was acquired as a SS and that's probably his best position.

Stockpiling SS really means we had 1 real SS last season.

What makes you think McKinney can't play FS? Part of his appeal is that he can play both safety spots as well as Nickel LB.

Personally I think Love can do it as well. I don't think theres some "ridiculous oversight" here.
Though you can’t measure heart no matter who coaches these
Big Blue '56 : 6/1/2020 8:40 am : link
players, I believe we have talent in the Secondary. If the new staff can’t coach them up, they don’t belong here, imv
The issue at Safety is that really none of the guys
LBH15 : 6/1/2020 8:56 am : link
are really proficient handling deeper coverage areas. Can they...yes. Is it what they are good at...probably not.

Elite deep coverage safeties are like elite left tackles. They are rare. Its an NFL problem more than a Giants problem. But the Giants, at least on paper currently, are a lot better off than other teams.
Love
ColHowPepper : 6/1/2020 9:18 am : link
I think he's not suited at SS, not enough thickness and not a good enough tackler. Nor do I think he's suited to CB, not fast enough, twitchy enough. For those reasons he's certainly not a slot corner. I think FS is most likely outcome and hope he can handle some of that is X-man is rotated in a scheme.

Love can tackle well and he is a willing tackler. He missed a few by being too aggressive at the point of contact. As he played for Peppers after the injury, he can play SS, maybe not a whole season's worth for the reason you mentioned, but he already played SS and did pretty well.

Yeah, except I didn't remark Elite, I wrote proficient and that may be a stretch itself.

I think Love will have a big role on the defense this year.
rasbutant : 6/1/2020 9:44 am : link
Probably has the best skill set for the that single high safety role on the current roster, but i like him a lot in the slot, and he did well in the SS role last year as well. Looking forward to seeing how Graham uses him and Xavier McKinney.

See below for film study on Love from 2019.....

Ok maybe, but not really relevant. XM seems like a good
LBH15 : 6/1/2020 9:48 am : link
pick and secondary clearly needed more talent. The question is do we have the right talent to cover both SS & FS, or is there a missing piece there.
Love is a swiss army knife
JonC : 6/1/2020 9:48 am : link
He's not built to play SS full time, nor to replace the physical gifts Peppers can bring to the defense. He'll get looks in cover 3, and extra corners, but fully expect Peppers at SS and McKinney at FS in traditional two safety packages.
In a perfect world, I think Love is the 3rd Safety
Simms11 : 6/1/2020 11:13 am : link
and will play a lot of the 3 safety packages. However, we know there’s injuries in the NFL and so I Love (no pun intended) his versatility. It adds much needed depth to a position of need as well. McKinney could also play slot CB in some packages and they might put Love in at FS at those times.
Love will get a lot of playing time
ZogZerg : 6/1/2020 12:09 pm : link
..
I expect to see a lot of 3-Safety packages.
Klaatu : 6/1/2020 2:07 pm : link
3-3-5, 4-3-5, whatever. Unless someone like Chris Williamson surprises, those three Safeties will probably be McKinney, Peppers, and Love. There are some who feel that Love can play FS. I don't, but that's just me. If I'm Love, and I just saw my team draft a versatile Safety plus a CB who seems best suited for the slot, I'd be worried about my playing time.
