i was dating a girl at Fordham university and we were at a party that had 2 TVs, the volume was down on both TVs so i had no idea it was effecting the Giant game.
I was both a Mets fan and a Giants fan. I remember I considered not going so I could watch Game 7, but it was an important game, so I went and people were either watching on portable TVs, which were pretty primitive back then, or listening to radios. I remember when Ray Knight hit that homerun the place exploded and it was between plays, and the players looked around not sure what was going one. It was quite a night!
As a Giants/Met fan who had a roommate at the time who was a huge Red Sox fan...and who up until the bottom of the 10th inning of Game 6 seemingly never missed an opportunity to remind me of that fact...that was one pretty damn good night!
great year for sports (for me). And none of this fandom was started at this time, but I am a Giants, Mets, Canadiens and Celtics fan - '86 was my sports peak. Even my HS hockey team won the state championship (though I was a freshman and didn't make varsity - still fun).
The scoreboard was very slow in putting up Mets updates, so the instant reactions of the crowd were from all the people who brought radios. Until the Mets won, which they put on the scoreboard immediately.

Even the Jets were super talented and not shareable. Klecko, Gas, Lyons, Toon, Welker, Hector, McNeil, shuler.
I was at Shea, tucked up in upper deck down the right field line.
I remember later when Strawberry hit his homer Scully mentioned it took him about 40 minutes to circle the bases lol. Upset at Davey Johnson for double switching him out of Game 6.
of the Mets, does anyone remember the July 4th game against the Braves the year before in 1985? I watched that entire thing on the Atlanta channel.
Yes! The infamous Rick Camp game when he tied it with a homer in the bottom of the 15th or something like that. Hernandez also hit for the cycle saying he was motivated because his divorce had been finalized that day.
I remember that night so well. I was at my dad (RIP)’s

Yeah, the Jets could've been in the SB that year too potentially. They had a really good team.

19 innings!
Yes! I was on vacation at my dad’s side of the family’s farm in western N.C. we got the braves games so we were always pumped when a Mets series coincided with our annual trip and we watched that all the way through. Crazy night!
Btw, a fun article on another crazy July Mets game ...
This one from 1986 against the Reds. Wish SNY could find tape of both these games for their Mets classic lineups. Baseball’s Craziest Game - ( New Window )

He rolled his bedroom b&w tv into the living room and we watched both. Mets got the big, color set.
A magical night with my best friend.
Love you pops! Thanks for giving me sports, even if you dealt me the Mets.
