However, discussions within the thread seem to have steered away from the original purpose and have become more partisan in nature. This has present problems for the moderating team.
Moving forward, we are going to cease allowing non-sports-related COVID discussions on BBI. We will lock this thread and it will eventually be archived since so much work went into it.
I thank you for your understanding and cooperation on this matter.

I wonder what external event someone didn't like that could have caused that.
kicker - I know you were enjoying that thread and it fell into your zone, but we were continually receiving complaints about the political nature of posts on it. However the dialogue had become over time less informative about what was happening, which was the stated intend, and much more theoretical which was not the intent of the thread.
for leaving that thread up as long as you did (moderators).
I know it got contentious at times, but I appreciated the thread and found it very valuable (early on especially).
Even those people who I disagreed with I still appreciated at some level.
The thread lost it's utility for me, so I stopped viewing it a couple weeks ago, but I know some people still found it informative and maybe even comforting to hear from a such a cross-section of people.
To all those who civilly added knowledge, opinion, discussion, and anecdotes I appreciate your contributions.
isn't it counterproductive if it just results in a bunch of new NFT's?
there's already been at least 1 that probably would have just gone in the corona thread. It's not like there's all that much else to talk about until camp actually opens, and camp opening in the first place is almost entirely tied to Corona which is just to say it's going to come up. So either there's a catchall thread for most of it or there will be a bunch of new ones.
and this is JMO but there was still a lot of good info being put into that thread daily (including yesterday), Bill's posts alone.

And people like you are the very reason why I regret even allowing the thread to start in the first place.
Personally I'd read and contributed less and less as it veered
into a discussion of economic ramifications and of course political partisanship that I either had no expertise (unlike kicker or Bill) or inclination (political views to prop up) to stay involved.
But it was extraordinarily useful with nods especially to BillL and other docs that contributed.
And really, what the heck else is there to talk about?
I feel like the number of posts I've dedicated to Shane Lemieux has likely already jinxed his career path right into the mortuary...
Personally I think it was a mistake to lock it, but thank you Eric for archiving it for reference.

Except you have no idea how many comments the moderators were forced to delete and how many BBI posters got banned because of it. And that's with the moderators looking the other way on a lot of crap.
Current events threads go off the rails on BBI. Everyone knows it. Hell, two of the most commonly used phrases on BBI are "before this thread gets deleted..." and "I guess this thread is gone."
But I don’t understand why not just ban those posters that can’t control themselves to refrain from that instead of deleting informative threads that make bbi a better experience for everyone else who can behave themselves?
Comment deleted from thread 598561please read Eric's statement above
I read it - am I wrong that there's already been 1 new NFT thread today with Covid in the title on the front page? It also happens to be the most posted in thread today and most of the posters in it are people who used to post in the locked thread.

We did ban a bunch of posters.
We did delete a bunch of threads.
But they kept popping up over and over again.
The thread was started 2 and a half months ago as a public service. There was a ton of good information on there (and that's why it will be archived).
But it served its purpose.
This is a sports website that has had to restrict discussions on current events because everything has become politicized.
It doesn't help me financially to do this. I do it for a variety of non-financial factors, including the sanity of the moderating team. Most people who come to a sports website do not want yet another place where they are bombarded with political messages.
Probably a very good idea.....I do not view myself controversial
With all respect, and I've said this many times in the past, the people who complain about not having restrictions are the many of the same people who insist someone gets banned for a difference of opinion.
Try walking in the shoes of Gidiefor, Gary, Boldruler, myself, or previous moderators who have been e-mailed by BOTH offended parties and DEMAND the other person be banned immediately (these same people usually hurl expletives at the moderators in the process).
I love the ones where somebody copies and pastes comments from the person they are complaining about while at the same time not including how they originally did the same thing.
Just like Twitter and Facebook, you have the absolute right to censor/delete whatever you want. It's not my baby.
I'll stop voicing disagreement over those policies, as its (i) fruitless and (ii) don't want to get another e-mail saying I'm being "belligerent"; it's a waste of my data space.

Eric, I get it I really do. I spent most of my life dealing with the public and beyond many being jerks, some are legitimately nuts so dealing with the public wears you down. But I would still argue that finding the sweet spot of bannings and allowing nothing with telling people that are so easily botherd that they email you to complain to try and not be so childish and use the feature that affords them the ability to view only football threads. That is the entire point of having that function and one reason when I see people complain about reprimands of starting NFT threads as a football thread I have often defended the moderator. It’s completely understandable that many would come here and only want to read about football. But anyone can easily do that, and if they “look” beyond that for things to complain about there is probably an ulterior motive.
But I get that it’s easier for you to just make a broad and fast rule. It’s just a shame that as many people on both sides of the issue are the cause of the problem, the whiners and the undisciplined in how they post. It cost us the local bar, and talking with regular friends feel this place had for so many years.
Eric, If I remember correctly, we lost the Weatherman due to the
The Covid thread was great with information provided from educated sources, front-line workers, scientists, etc.
We are very lucky to have the BBI because of the cross-section of educated sharers.
We are very lucky to have this forum for the things we discuss...and there are plenty to discuss in all facets without getting snarky with each other.
Our commonality besides being human is our love for the Giants!
Funny I always got the opposite impression, and it was more the moderation and bannings of perceived long valued members for his leaving. But who knows
But that's just me. The forum could simply have an ignore feature would would allow this entire framework of worrying about what other people think to go away. Sure there could be bannings from extreme behavior, but ignore functions are somewhat self-policing. You don't like the poster, you never have to see their writings again.
That thread was informative at a time of national crisis, which is clearly not over. Even though I did not post much in there I read it daily, and learned much. The national crisis is far from over.
Yes this is a football site. But is it only a football site? Either it is or it isn't. It is actually a community which could be better fostered.
All of the moderators are subjective and EACH has their own subjective biases. There are times when I react to a deleted thread, banning, or post by thinking, "I would have let that go." I'm sure the other moderators have felt the same way.
I'm going to guess and say at least 1/3 of the current posters have technically violated the Terms of Use, not just with posting restricted content but just by being abusive towards other posters. If we strictly enforced everything, we'd lose the a huge chunk of the posters. So a lot of this crap we let slide. But if someone is repeatedly being a dick, the attitude the team has is "enough is enough." This has even occurred with people we actually know and like.
But back to your original point. Most things are not black and white. They are gray. Those kind of posts were all over the COVID thread. Most people knew what the insinuation was due to the loaded language. Then came personal insults based on political affiliation. It's not rare and random. It's widespread. On EVERY current events thread now.
So you are asking each subjective moderator to make a judgment call on each post within an NFT thread on a sports website, thereby opening up the entire team to e-mails of "Why the fuck did you ban me you left-wing/right-wing asshole!! You didn't ban so-and-so." This isn't conjecture. We tried to do this multiple times in the mid-2010s and each time it failed. It doesn't work. We don't have the time, stomach, or patience to deal with it.
It's simply easier to say, no.
The site has changed because society started changing once we entered the 2010s. It is what it is.
Eric, thank you for keeping this site as ‘pure’ as possible,
There’s so much garbage everywhere on social media today, it’s a small salvation to have 1 place that can be an escape from reality. A haven to feel only the shared pain of our beloved heroes.
I was checking the thread daily since it started, but in the last week or so the conversation went down hill. Checking the recent posts I would see post after post about white supremacists , name calling, its all Trump's fault, its all Cuomo's fault and blatantly political posts that I'm surprised weren't deleted. There were two frequent posters that were constantly making inflammatory posts. They were deservedly called out by other posters and frankly I was surprised they weren't banned. I don't blame the mods for ending it and I can't imagine what it took to babysit it.
On the other hand I hope current events threads will be allowed. . What makes the BBI community so unique is that we have doctors, medical researchers, economists and other professionals that add a unique perspective that it is rare to see elseware. I hope that will be allowed and I hope the Mods aren't too inflexible. Yes, I know its a sports forum but it is current events that are on people's mind.
would feel the need to complain to the mods via email about somebody being mean to them.
How about we just ban anyone that complains to the moderators? That would save you some trouble in the long term.
No, we also rely on posters to tell us when their are problems. We don't see everything. In fact, I would say at least 1/3 of problematic posts are identified to us.
This is a football site where most people want to avoid these discussions. It’s easy if you don’t like Eric’s rules then you’re free to avoid his site where he dedicates so much of his time and effort into.
"Moving forward, we are going to cease allowing non-sports-related COVID discussions on BBI. We will lock this thread and it will eventually be archived since so much work went into it.
I thank you for your understanding and cooperation on this matter."
Apparently threads that promulgate NRA 'Second Amendment' points of view get a pass.

I agree in part, but you have NFT for this reason so no one is making you look at the threads. But I understand the no political talk and have always agreed with it. The political talk in the COVID thread needed to go but I guess it became too numerous to police individually. And while I get it, its disappointing nonetheless.

Of course I don't know how many folks were banned and posts deleted in the process of keeping the thread alive and reasonable.
But I can imagine, after all on the LGBT profiling psych analysis thread I profiled as "Consul", LOL.
most of the thread even before I re joined as a member here. BBI is a place that has many intelligent posters and I enjoy much of what I read here, especially the things that go against my current viewpoint. Yet over the years there has been a lot of nastiness and I can understand the move away from politics.
Thank to everyone who contributed to the thread, and thanks to Eric and the mods for allowing it here.
more than a couple of times then maybe they are the problem and should be banned.
I'm only half kidding but I have been here for about 24 years and I still can't wrap my head around a grown man crying to Eric about how someone spoke to him on an anonymous message board. Anyone who does it should take a long look in the mirror.

We allow politics threads but ban analytics threads. That’s where the real trench fighting goes down around here...
Well, if we're horse trading, we could allow politics threads but ban threads about smoking meat.
Okay how about this - in the allowed column: politics and Covid19. In the banned category: analytics, meat smoking, & conversations only the 2-9 defense. I am willing to concede further banning of sumo wrestler lineman to close this deal.
I will trade disallowing where to eat in NYC threads plus also disallowing a thread to be named later (maybe the RIP celebrity threads?) for allowing smoked meat threads. Those are valuable.

I appreciate the concession on the sumos. I think we're close to a deal.
I have come to the conclusion that CiP, PJ and Del deserve to take over the baseball Negotiations. These fine gentlemen know how to cut through the partisan bullshit and get it done.

The only guy I've ever disagreed with and considered reporting was Dylan Fan, and not because of our disagreements but rathet because Micheal Manring appeared somewhere on his list of 1200 Bassists Better than Paul McCartney.

This proposal has real merit. Maybe Eric and the mods are still thinking it over. With a little data, Kicker might have something useful to add about the soundness and effects of the deal in terms of future site traffic, ignition of collateral thread inquiries (hereinafter "hits"), new and lost ads and ad hits, likelihood of increasing/decreasing donations, likely amounts involved on some sort of probability scale, gaining/losing members, and so on -- all valuable to projections of future site prosperity and impact on the mental health of members and visitors.
I really don't understand how we're negotiating allowable threads
most were turning everything political and arguing (as usual). It had turned into any other political thread. I actually stopped reading it for the most part, so I don't know what the final straw was, but I agree with the football only stance.
is we need the (previously) annual douche-bag list to come back this year. That thread brought out the very best in a lot of us.
-I think Overseer in particular really climbed the rankings with his performance. Xbronx also, though sometimes it did seem a little forced.
-PJ and I did our best, probably came up a little short, but proud of the effort.
-Kicker told a number of people with different views than his that they were "out of their depth.. adults table.. etc" which was humorous and impressive
-there was i think it was Rocco who said 100x the "virus is in control" or "virus is winning"... which the sheer volume of that sign-off like he was Michael Kay announcing a towering home run automatically gets him into the top 25...
-you had the usual set of bluebloods that compete every year and make this site what it is, that stopped by for a few well-timed driveby's...
-but the top slot may be reserved for Nitro... it takes a a special kind of douche to be glad someone else is unemployed
Anyway, well done by all... it killed a lot of hours during an otherwise very boring two months.
should be consolidated and pinned like COVID was. Let all the research papers live on 1 thread so all of the scholars can get their fill. Having a full course syllabus throw into a thread about a Barkley highlight run has gotten very tedious.

There’s NO way I’m still number 1 (back to back champ!). I haven’t put nearly the effort into it that I used to.

Somehow, I'm not surprised that you are proud of your effort. I'm not sure how being glad that someone is unemployed surpasses asking McL whether his mom blew her brains out. You are vile, disgusting human being.

That thread was informative at a time of national crisis, which is clearly not over. Even though I did not post much in there I read it daily, and learned much. The national crisis is far from over.
Yes this is a football site. But is it only a football site? Either it is or it isn't. It is actually a community which could be better fostered.
lol, i see what you did there. And yes, they do have that right... as long as they are regulated entities going forward as a result.
It had run it's course weeks ago and if it hadn't been pandemic related the mods/Eric would have banished it weeks ago...as they should have.
Read my responses in this thread. We did. But they kept popping up. Numerous BBI posters were banned and posts removed because of the thread.
There are plenty of 21 year olds on there more than welcome to break COVID-19 down for you all.
How about we just ban anyone that complains to the moderators? That would save you some trouble in the long term.

No, we also rely on posters to tell us when their are problems. We don't see everything. In fact, I would say at least 1/3 of problematic posts are identified to us.
Probably safe. I can't see any way a thread on that topic could possibly get political or bring out emotions in people.
You should definitely start a thread on it. Probably have as much success as all of your previous nostradumbass predictions.
You really are a total turd(I toned it down).
I second this and there were many other very informative posters. I think it was an important thread and wish there was a way to continue it.

LOL. That thread would last like 2 minutes before all hell would break loose.
LOL! “Actualize the denouement”...you ought to learn the meanings of big words before you use them. Congratulations for making one of the shittiest posts in bbi history.

I think it steered away from politics to a large degree - compared with a theoretical guess at how it might have gone, anyway.
Of course I don't know how many folks were banned and posts deleted in the process of keeping the thread alive and reasonable.
But I can imagine, after all on the LGBT profiling psych analysis thread I profiled as "Consul", LOL.
Dun - Dun.
Luddites! <shaking fist>
Thank to everyone who contributed to the thread, and thanks to Eric and the mods for allowing it here.
Well, if we're horse trading, we could allow politics threads but ban threads about smoking meat.
I'm only half kidding but I have been here for about 24 years and I still can't wrap my head around a grown man crying to Eric about how someone spoke to him on an anonymous message board. Anyone who does it should take a long look in the mirror.

Okay how about this - in the allowed column: politics and Covid19. In the banned category: analytics, meat smoking, & conversations only the 2-9 defense. I am willing to concede further banning of sumo wrestler lineman to close this deal.
Hey, man. No conspiracy theories!

I'll trade you smoking meats for all the top ten threads. Or in other words most of DanMetroMan's threads j/k
Seem to be. Tried it. Never got into print. Was just asking this. That was the answer.

Eric: Locking it was, to me, a mistake. Very non-USA. Buck up. Put it back.

I appreciate the concession on the sumos. I think we're close to a deal.
Would you throw in no further discussion of Rush?

It's almost as if he's taking something like poetic license and foolishly expecting not to be taken literally.

The only guy I've ever disagreed with and considered reporting was Dylan Fan, and not because of our disagreements but rathet because Micheal Manring appeared somewhere on his list of 1200 Bassists Better than Paul McCartney.

But what happens to those poor unfortunates who have a difficult time keeping it lit?
This proposal has real merit. Maybe Eric and the mods are still thinking it over. With a little data, Kicker might have something useful to add about the soundness and effects of the deal in terms of future site traffic, ignition of collateral thread inquiries (hereinafter "hits"), new and lost ads and ad hits, likelihood of increasing/decreasing donations, likely amounts involved on some sort of probability scale, gaining/losing members, and so on -- all valuable to projections of future site prosperity and impact on the mental health of members and visitors.
Perfect example of the two party system failing the people.

There’s NO way I’m still number 1 (back to back champ!). I haven’t put nearly the effort into it that I used to.

is we need the (previously) annual douche-bag list to come back this year. That thread brought out the very best in a lot of us.

You don't even have to try. You're a natural. ;)

Somehow, I'm not surprised that you are proud of your effort. I'm not sure how being glad that someone is unemployed surpasses asking McL whether his mom blew her brains out. You are vile, disgusting human being.
