I enjoy baseball, and I enjoy rooting for the Yankees. It will be disappointing and annoying if they can't work something out, and maybe I'll be a little less willing to spend money on the league, but my enjoyment of watching the sport won't change just because I'm frustrated at their squabbling over money.
Not matter what, it is a bastardized season. No fans basically makes it boring and incomplete. 40 millions people have lost their jobs and all anyone wants is just a bit of release from reality.
They should just cancel the season at this point anyway. Even 81 games would be a joke and a WS winner would be dramatically diminished in the eyes of historians years from now. Move on.
After the last few MLB strikes, I was hesitant to get back into baseball. It took some time.
The way they're behaving now....I think it will take me a while this time too. Doesn't either side think of the Fans ??
I will eventually come back to the game I love. I'll go see our local minor league team. Our college baseball team plays in the Colonial Athletic Association, and they play a fairly well-balanced schedule in the CAA. That's all I ask for in a ballgame -- 2 evenly matched teams playing good ol' country hardball.
As far as putting a dollar in Wilpon's pocket.....no chance.
I love baseball and I miss sports obviously... but I don’t miss the hours of time I feel like I have to devote to it. I’m more excited for football than I am depressed at the notion that baseball won’t have a season. It’s such a long season.
Exactly. Love baseball. Loved it before COVID. Will love it after. Don't know why a pandemic and the difficulties in hashing out how to salvage a season would effect my love for the game.
I stopped watching when Derek Jeter retired ... and will probably
never watch a MLB game again ... I grew up watching Mickey Mantle hit home runs from both sides of the plate and was there for ‘his retirement day’ , but ticket prices are just ridiculous. Jeter was the last great Yankee and baseball is now dead to me.
hard to imagine full capacity stadiums absent an effective, mass vaccine. Maybe they can go 25-30% capacity next year.
So they need to figure the new compensation model out... and i think they'll come to an agreement by end of week. You might have some players that sit the year out though.
i still love the sport. But maybe i find myself being slightly less die hard. I think that is the risk they are running here. Its turning Die hards into more casual, casual into more i barely care, and the barely cares turn into dont care at all.
Sports overall should be very careful right now. I consider myself a massive sports fan, but i kind of agree that i havent missed the time i devote to it. I also dont miss it as much as i thought i would. I thought it would be torture and i mean i do miss it but not nearly as much as i thought i would.

That shouldn't be MLB specific then. NBA/NHL have had messed up seasons and we still don't yet know about Football.
If you weren't a big baseball fan than I'd wager you would continue that trend when they resume playing, same for those that love it and hate it. I don't know what the pandemic or negotiations have to do with a change in outlook though. I don't watch the NBA anymore, I don't blame the pandemic for that.
so i agree it isnt MLB specific. That said the NHL/NBA completed like 3/4 of their season and seem on track to finish the season. Football also seems likely to return. MLB is the only one that could risk cancelling the season and having a two year break. They also seem to have no idea how to move forward with their season. I mentioned earlier that i get that its harder for them then say NHL/NBA being that they havent had any of their season, but those sports are moving forward with plans while MLB are throwing out proposals that the other side is laughing at.
and i dont know if i will love it when it comes back so i dont think its a blanket "if you didnt care before you wont care and if you did you will". If they take a 2 year break because one or both sides are greedy then i dont think ill be as big of a fan as i was before. But thats just me, im sure many will feel very differently. My point is MLB popularity was already declining so losing fans or even just losing die hard fans could be a big deal for them.
and the perception of that I think is being made into a bigger deal. That's how these things go, like when Fox can't reach a deal with your provider, and then does.
But they have a strong labor union which is unmatched in sports, so their situation is completely unique.
As for popularity, not sure what to make of that yet. Ticket sale declines the past couple of seasons would need to keep up for longer to think there is a worry there. Their TV viewership is strong, in many markets saw increases in 2019 so i'm TBD on how the MLB is trending right now.
If the Yankees or Mets (or Rangers, Knicks, Nets, or Islanders) are in first place I will watch them play (if there is nothing else on). That does not make me a fan of those teams. I like watching good teams play well.
If these jerks and ignorant people, both players and owners do not come to an agreement I think that will be the end of baseball for me.
The shame is I have been a huge Dodger fan since 1955. I even kept rooting for them after their move. Hell I kept them close to my heart after I moved.
I only watch Dodger games now. I used to put on a game in the evening for some relaxation and entertainment but no more in the past few years.
Sickens me.
of course I will come back. We are dealing with an unprecedented public health situation. Owners and players both are greedy and there are huge amounts of money at stake to be sure, but merely making a season happen at this point would be a monumental task. I want our game. I want fairness for our players insofar as is possible. They would be putting themselves and their families in a very precarious situation by participating. That does have a value. Are the teams taking a bath on this? Yeah, sure they are. Of course there had to be negotiations.
There's a lot to be upset about RE: corruption and lack of accountability throughout the major sports, but if the owners and MLBPA can't agree on how to proceed in the midst of a generational public health crisis, I don't see how that merits a mass exodus. I wasn't for '94 but this is not that. This is a way more loaded situation with money just one among the factors.
When they start playing again, I'll be back.

Ditto. And I think several teams may go belly up
All sports organizations are hit by this.

That's true, but MLB is playing with fire with these negotiations. They should be private. They sound like babys
not sure if you are a hockey fan, but if so, did you start watching after 2004?
Been getting up early to watch baseball from Taiwan so far during lockdown. I guess I’m just a doormat fan but I’ll be back.
Still think they get this done and have July in the spotlight because I am sure that my level of devotion is not that of the majority.
I heard Clay Travis say he wouldn't pay any attention to baseball if they didn't play this season.
He sounded like my 5 yr old.
"If you don't do what I want, when I want, I'm taking my ball and going home!"

I also cant imagine a fall/early winter without football ... talk about depressing.
So lets hope these sports can all figure out a way even if its not the best product due to lack of a full training offseason, or empty stands
