Art Stapleton The Record: No joint practices for NFL this summer. For future reference Joe Judge is big proponent of them, and had this preseason taken place under usual circumstances, Giants and Titans lined up well in Tennessee in Week 2.

Schwartz NYP: Giants’ search for long-term center is far from over

“That favors Pulley, the 27-year-old with 26 NFL starts, including nine with the Giants in 2018. At 6-foot-4 and 308 pounds, Pulley is not a bruiser but he can make blocks on the second level. He is a product of Vanderbilt and has the NFL snaps and smarts to handle the assignment, although he lacks the ideal size and power...”

“I think Spencer Pulley is a good center,’’ Shaun O’Hara, the starting center on the Giants’ Super Bowl XLII team, told The Post...”

“Knowing the offense and actually snapping the ball are the two biggest impediments for Lemieux, as far as gearing up to make a run at center as a rookie.
“The toughest thing a lot of guys have, if you’ve never played center, is shotgun snaps,’’ said O’Hara, currently an NFL Network analyst. “Most guys can figure out the under-center snap. Shotgun snaps, sometimes people become mental midgets with that and they just can’t handle it. It sounds to me he’s the kind of guy that is gonna stay out and snap 1,000 balls if he has to, to make sure he can handle that.’’

“Based on the all work needed to get it all down, O’Hara said he would be “shocked’’ if Lemieux at any time as a rookie took snaps as the starting center.

“For the sheer fact Spencer Pulley is there,’’ O’Hara said. “He’s not going to come in and be better than Spencer Pulley right away. Just from a mental standpoint, making the calls. And you got a young quarterback too. Daniel Jones has not seen every defense yet. Would I want a second-year quarterback and a rookie center playing? Heck no.’’

The falling apart of this deal costs the Eagles a 6th rounder for Tim Jernigan's departure, and moves a 7th to the Cowboys for the departure of Jeff Heath back above the 32 pick limit

However, there is an APY tie between Jeff Heath & Ronald Darby at $3M for that last spot in the top 32 on the 2021 compensatory picks board.

Should Darby play more snaps than Heath, the Eagles could nudge the Cowboys out for that 7th rounder, right now set to be Mr. Irrelevant

The Passing of Wes Unseld...transcends basketball so let me spend a moment on him through some Dan Daly posts yesterday:

Dan Daly: Here are the 6 players in NBA  history who scored 10,000+ career points but grabbed even more rebounds. In 4 of the cases, the difference is slight. Wes Unseld, on the other hand, had 29.6% more rebounds than points. (And Bill Russell had 48.9% more). Wes got you the ball. R.I.P.

That time in the 1970 playoffs Wes Unseld outrebounded the entire Knicks team, 34-30 -- one that would go on to win the #NBA  championship

Marin 20p 8r
Johnson 14p 7r
Unseld 23p 34r
Carter 23p 6r
Monroe 25p 3r

Loughery 17 2r
Scott 5p 1r
Miles 0 0
Tucker 0 0
Heaney 0 1r
Ellis 0 1r

Bradley 12p 4r
DeBusschere 18p 10r
Reed 12p 5r
Frazier 24p 4r
Barnett 19p 1r

Riordan 8p 0r
Stallworth 12p 1r

Russell 2p 0

Always thought it was kinda cool that Elvin Hayes basically ended Wes Unseld's college career -- when Houston beat Louisville in the 1968 Sweet 16 -- then they teamed a decade later to bring the Bullets/Wizards their only NBA title

The story says Wes, "An 'A' and 'B' student, . . . is the most highly sought cager in Kentucky's history, having 110 colleges after him. . . . Kentucky wants him as its first Negro."

Was just thinking about this. What if Wes Unseld had gone to Kentucky & integrated the basketball program there? Would Texas Western (UTEP), with its all-black starting 5, have beaten the Wildcats for the 1966 NCAA championship . . . or would history have been different?

That was Wes' sophomore season. He averaged 19.9 points & 19.4 rebounds a game for a 16-10 Louisville team. Would Unseld -- together with Pat Riley & Louie Dampier -- been enough to hold off David Lattin, Bobby Joe Hill & Co.? I think maybe. So then what?

Then the 1st all-black starting 5 to win the NCAA Tournament would have been . . . Denny Crum's 1980 Louisville Cardinals (Darrell Griffith, Rodney McCray, Derek Smith, Wiley Brown, Jerry Eaves). Love to speculate about these things.

Never knew this. Here's the Louisville C-J's 1964 All-State HS hoops team. Wes Unseld leads the way, but it includes future NBA -er Butch Beard, who later coached the Nets, & Bob Tallent, who was coach at GW MBB when Wes was leading the Bullets to the '78 NBA title.

Wes Unseld as a senior at Louisville's Seneca HS in December 1963: a man among boys. Here he is going for 37 and 33

Gonna quit with this one. Bet U Didn't Know: Wes Unseld graduated from Louisville's Seneca HS in 1964. Graduating a year earlier was America's 1963 Junior Miss, . . . Diane Sawyer.

Au revoir, Wes. Anybody who could throw an outlet pass like you has my eternal admiration.

This is too good. Diane Sawyer won the 1963 Junior Miss pageant the same night Wes Unseld led her HS basketball team in Louisville to the state title. Her question after being crowned: "Who won the ball game?" Answer: Seneca by 6. "What a wonderful night this has been."

Besides hoops, Wes Unseld was also known to throw a pretty mean discus at Louisville's Seneca HS. Won the state title. Being a Weight Man, he put the shot too.

File this under: I had no idea. In the basketball offseason at Louisville, Wes Unseld continued to compete in track. Here he is winning the discus and shot put in a 1967 meet. He was a junior then...

Giants Birthdays

Jonathan Casillas LLB FA-NE 2015 NYG 2015-2016 6-3-1987

Omar Douglas WR UDFA-Minnesota 1994 NYG 1994-1996 6-3-1972

NYT: The Reality Of Camp: It Must Be Brutal (8-02-1998)

“A year ago at the Giants' training camp, Omar Douglas, a 25-year-old wide receiver with plans to be a lawyer someday, was sprinting down the practice field in a drill designed to simulate the downfield charge of a kickoff.
There was an orange traffic cone several yards in front of Douglas, marking the spot where players were supposed to change direction. At full speed, Douglas planted his foot near the cone and heard a popping noise, as if someone were cracking his knuckles.
An instant later, he felt the pain in his left knee, and with it, Douglas fell headfirst with so much force that grass would wedge between the bars of his face mask. Douglas knew his season was over.
A doctor would later confirm Douglas's hunch. The diagnosis: torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Grimacing, with eyes shut, Douglas did not see Coach Jim Fassel reach for the cone and move it 10 yards to the left -- away from the fallen Douglas.

''O.K., let's go,'' Fassel shouted to the lineup of players who had just watched the abrupt expiration of Douglas's season. ''Next guy.''
And Fassel blew his whistle. They would move the drill a few feet. Training camp continued.
As trainers leaned over Douglas, his teammates -- in essence they were now his former teammates -- sprinted past him one after another, as if he were another traffic cone.
''That's football,'' Douglas, who is healed and back in camp, said when the scene was recounted to him last week. ''We all know it. It's tough out there.''
Unlike baseball's spring training, where preparation for the season is more deliberate and the air is laden with a sense of rebirth, a pro football training camp is a heartless place where injuries are frequent, careers are squashed in an instant, and pity is nonexistent.

To those who have made football a profession, these unwritten codes of behavior are neither insensitive nor barbaric. They are deemed necessary, so that rough and rugged men can continue to play a rough and rugged game.
As Fassel, who is a gracious, courteous man with a friendly disposition, is fond of saying: ''I'm not coaching choirboys. It is a loud and fierce world that they play in.''
In training camp, where there are 80 players competing for roughly 53 spots on the active roster, the hitting is loud, the competition fierce, and mercy is a world away.
Some players have little chance of making the team; they are in camp to serve as an able body -- someone the first-stringers can use to hone their blocking and tackling skills. Since no team wants to endanger star running backs by letting them go head-to-head with the first-team defense day after day in training camp, every team has a fifth- or sixth-string running back for the defense to pound on...

Douglas said: ''I don't know that anyone on the outside can understand us. On the inside, all this stuff isn't all that striking. Since high school, we've been surrounded by this atmosphere. You don't think twice about it.''

Joe Wellborn C UDFA-Texas A& M 1966 NYG 1966 6-3-1944

Texas A& M: “Wellborn was a three-year football letterman and was a senior on Aggie coach Gene Stallings first team in 1965 earning All-SWC honors as a linebacker. He was voted a team captain and was the first recipient of the Aggie Heart Award, the highest football award presented to a senior who displays the intangibles such as effort, desire, determination, competitiveness, leadership and courage. The Aggie Heart Award winner is the player who extends himself to the fullest every time he dons his Aggie gear. Wellborn earned his degree and went on to play in the NFL with the New York Giants in 1966 and 1967 and is currently a 12th Man endowed donor.”
