NFT: Best outdoor concrete paint

davek3698 : 6/3/2020 2:35 pm
My concrete patio has seen better days. Its likely 25 years old now and has some parts that have worn away showing the rocks within after years of powerwashing, etc…. Still pretty smooth though. I was thinking of painting it and was wondering if anyone has used something they would recommend. It’s a pretty large patio, likely 20’ x 25’.

I’m looking for something “stone-looking” and not shiny. A course material added in would be great, though those applications seem difficult. Has anyone used something like KILZ Over Armor Wood/Concrete Coating or Behr Granite Grip? TIA.
I will be watching this thread....

Me too
I don't have direct experience.

But this fall/winter, I'm going to have my driveway resurfaced with an epoxy/stone. I am waiting till after the rainy season. Ideally, I will get my garage done also.
I recommend

RandonSeal sealer with a pigment added. You will stain and seal in one step, and you will get a longer lifespan out of it than stain and sealer separately. I redid a stamped concrete patio with it, and didn't have to reapply for 8 years
stay away from Rust-O-Leum

I had to get $600 in expenses back from them
Another good alternative

is Super-Seal (25 for semigloss, 30 for gloss). This also comes with a pigment and is about $145 for a 5 gallon bucket (RandoSeal is about $200 for a 5 gallon bucket)
good questions!

I just resfuraced mine with newcrete rapidset, but some of the patches are still visible (did about 1/16in coat). Do you guys think the paint would cover that entirely, or would differences of shade on the concrete still be apparent after painting?

I think you need to etch the concrete with diluted Muratic Acid first.

I have experience through work using a two part epoxy paint, seems to work really well on concrete. Anyone use a two part for a residential application??
Make sure it is clean and dry first

It was a five Gallon tub, and I think the Pic is bigger than it is in real life. Sorry about that
Why not use a polyaspartic coating?

If you are using one of the tinted sealers, it will all be uniform in color. I used a terracotta tint, and nothing behind it showed through.
The last patio..

I used KILZ as a base and then added tint on top. Looked like stone. You'll need to add a top layer of tint or something else to give it a matte look.
if you want to do epoxy or refinish the concrete

Held up so well that i did the same to the plywood floor of my Amish shed. The high grade sand aggregate made for an excellent textured finish. Comes in dozens of colors, sold at tile distribution centers.
Not a Q on patio but

I need to paint the lower portion of my house, which is cement, or some form of masonry. Also the steps leading to the half basement. Any thoughts much appreciated.
