NGT: Peyton Manning wanted to go to Washington not Denver

Giantsfan79 : 6/23/2020 3:24 pm
quoted from the athletic so I didn't link the whole interview.

Quote:
Mike Shanahan, Redskins head coach: We were very much interested in Peyton at that time. I mean, I followed his career. I know him quite well, so I feel like we had an excellent chance to get him. But knowing that Eli was in the NFC East, it surely wasn’t a slam dunk.

Peyton: I had known Mike for a long time, played for him in a Pro Bowl, and we’ve stayed in touch, and so I felt comfortable talking to them. But they had made a trade for the second pick of the draft, which they ended up taking Robert Griffin III. So as soon as they made that trade, even Mike kind of knew that eliminated them. It just wasn’t going to make sense. Kind of like the Colts, they were obviously going to go with a quarterback in the first round.

Shanahan: I think Peyton was disappointed. Kyle and I were kind of surprised that he still wanted to meet with us. I can remember talking with Elway one time not too long ago, a few years ago. He said, “Mike, do you realize that Peyton, I think, was going to go to your place? I think he really wanted to go to your place more than our place.” I said, “Really? I didn’t know that.” And that came from John. I knew we were fairly close.

may Dan Snyder live a long life!
I don’t buy it

At the time it was widely reported that he didn’t want to go to the Jets or an NFC East team because he didn’t want to play against Eli twice a year. Peyton wanting to play for Dan Snyder?? This sounds more revisionist history with Shanahan like when he claimed that he didn’t want RG3.
I don't buy it either

and all that really said was it was an option not a preference.

But I don't get the "he doesn't want to play against his brother" way of thinking.

I'd understand if both brothers were boxers and they didn't want to beat the crap out of each other... or NFL players where one was on D and the other one on O.

But in-family dueling QBs seems like it would be fun.

Anyone who has one or more brothers grew up competing against them in sports, video games, etc.

Why not play against your brother twice a year?
the interesting thing

is this article is quoting the inside players (the Shanahan's and Elway) not some reporter, so I'd guess more articles will be forthcoming about this revelation.

I had read that the final three teams were Denver

San Fran and Tennessee. Or I thought that was his final three.

I kind of "buy" the stay outside the NFCE also but not heard that.

Especially since they don't actually play against each other. It's not like they're going to block or tackle each other. Both are never on the field at the same time.

SF was in it as much as they were in it on Brady this offseason.

Supposedly Seattle was in it too, at least initially.

Peyton would have killed playing for the Shanahans assuming he would behaved like Brady under Belichick/McDaniels.

Very, very odd narrative, I agree.

The Mannings live by a different set of rules.
