NFT: Favorite Stephen King book turned into movie/mini-series?

SFGFNCGiantsFan : 6/23/2020 5:47 pm
A plethora to choose from-Carrie (Spacek), The Shining, Cujo, It (either the '90 TV version or the movies), The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, etc.

For me, it's Stand By Me with River Phoenix. That was such a great movie & probably one of the first movies I ever remember seeing. Kiefer Sutherland was such a great villain in that movie too, Haha. I love The Shining & Shawshank too. The IT 1990 miniseries scarred me as a child; I've never liked clowns since.

How about you?
I loved The Stand
FranknWeezer : 6/23/2020 5:48 pm : link
Early 90's version w/ Gary Sinise, Laura san Giacomo, etc. Read all 1156 pages of that harback book when I was 17.
Hard to pick
j_rud : 6/23/2020 6:05 pm : link
Stand by Me and Shawshank are the obvious choices. It and The Stand havent aged well. Remember the Desperation miniseries? That was a missed opportunity. 'Salem's Lot was the first King book I read as a teen and I always enjoyed that movie. Hearts in Atlantis is overlooked too. Good movie, and one of my favorite King stories.

We're in a bit of a King revival but its been a mixed bag of good (Gerald's Game), lackluster (Pet Semetary remake) and unforgivable (The Dark Tower). Theyre doing another Stand miniseries starring Whoopie Goldberg, Alexander Skarsgard, and James Marsden. Amazon made a Dark Tower pilot based on Wizard and Glass with Jerome Flynn (Bron on GoT) as Steven Deschain and Michael Rooker as Eldred Jonas but it wasnt picked up. Apparently an adaptation of a more recent nook, Revival, is in the works with Russel Crowe and Samuel Jackson. Its a fucked up story and could be a great movie.
Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption

were great movies. TSR is probably the better movie but I watched Stand By Me as a kid so I have a connection with that movie.

Just to add a new answer - I really liked the 1963 adaptation, although as usual the book was better.
Stand by Me
pjcas18 : 6/23/2020 6:22 pm : link
and Shawshank were both stories from the same book (Different Seasons) and had different titles (The Body and Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption) respectively.

I like Shawshank the best. one of those movies I'll watch every time it's on. Such a great cast.

Children of the Corn (another short story) had me scared for days.

I loved the Shining too. I think I read that King actually hated the movie.

Misery is another good one.
90s IT was great
Dankbeerman : 6/23/2020 6:38 pm : link
remake was good but think it lacked to much without the setting of the 50s/80s. Pet Semetary was good for the 80s.

enjoyed the Tommyknockers

looking forward to the stand remake, hope they dont screw it up.
Liked the outsider mini series but the end seemed rushed and they had 5 minutes tops with el cuco may try the book
The Shawshank Redemption was based on a Stephen King novel?

Are not all of his books horror? Sorry for the ignorance.

Salem's Lot.
Gene : 6/23/2020 8:09 pm : link
The mini-series that starred David Soul was one of those rare occasions where the film version outdid the book.
Shawshank, Green Mile, and Doctor Sleep are the best ones
BlackLight : 6/23/2020 8:11 pm : link
I can think of off the top of my head. Most everything else they've tried to adapt has been either terrible, or disappointing. The Shining could be viewed as a good stand-alone movie, but if you've read the book and look at it as an adaption, it suffers.

The recent IT movies were good.

The Mist was 99% of its way to being a great movie, but the ending fucked it up royally.

"The Stand" miniseries is alright, but faithfully adapting a novel that long and dense into even a mini-series can't be easy. An new adaptation is dropping on CBS All Access later this year, and I'm optimistic about that.

I refused to watch it but now that its on cable I stumbled across is a few weeks ago. Its not even recognizable. Its just too big. You cant do it as a movie. I honestly dont think it can be done period, although the Amazon idea of starting with Wizard and Glass was interesting and made sense. Reviews for the pilot popped up recently and apparently it was good. Go figure.

King didn’t agree with what Kubrick did with the shining
djm : 6/23/2020 9:18 pm : link
Not sure king hated it necessarily, but he didn’t agree with it. I actually think Kubrick’s version out does king’s novel which may sound like sacrilege, just my take. Kubricks shining is practically unrecognizable. Remember there was a Tv series remake of the shining that was much more faithful to the book. Wasn’t terrible. King had a lot of say with that remake.

11-22-63 on Hulu was mentioned and i agree it very good. The other Hulu king series called castle rock is ok, but it lost me midway through season 2.

Lots of love for the dark tower book series I see. Guess I should try it?

Always thought it was Stephen King’s best and one of the best horror books ever written. The movie was ok but I thought missed too much of the book and some of those parts would have been easy to film.

I’m a big fan of The Stand
jpkmets : 6/23/2020 10:51 pm : link
Yeah, it’s dated and cheesy but the casting (particularly Adam Storks, Gary Sinise, Miguel Ferreira and Matt Freuer and Ray Walston) we’re fabulous. Molly Ringwald annoyed me, but still going to give it to the Stand.

For a lesser known one check out the Night Flier - it’s on YouTube. Good horror flick,

My favorite is the Dark Tower series. I really hope it gets made into a huge sprawling series one day.

No, it's a different, more hopeful ending. Which I understand might not have worked for a movie, but I thought the ending they chose was awful. Not like it offended me, but like, it was the objectively wrong ending for the story they were telling.

Anyway, the best thing I liked about The Stand was Matt Frewer as Trashcan Man.

Carrie (1976)
Ron from Ninerland : 6/24/2020 1:05 am : link
The book was nothing special, but it was the most memorable movie based on one of his books. It was gut wrenching and emotional from start to finish. For me, the last scene in Carrie is one of the great shockers in cinematic history. Great performances from Sissy Spacek and Amy Irving, and the first movie for John Travolta

It is without a doubt “Running man“
For me, it HAS to be "The Green Mile"
mavric : 6/24/2020 8:03 am : link
The book came out over a period of 6 months - 1 mini-novel each month. My friends who are also readers talked about it all the time. I got a call at midnight from one of those friends who told me he found the released 6th book at a 24-hour store so I got dressed, went to the store and read the book before going to work the next morning.

Movie was pretty good, but the book and the way it was released captured me more than any book I've ever read. King is a bit of a genius and his writing superb

The SHINING isn't just the best King adapted movie...
x meadowlander : 6/24/2020 8:23 am : link
...IMO, it's one of the best films of all time, period. In my top-5 forever. Directing brilliance by Stanley Kubrick, stellar casting, horrifying creepiness without much actual blood spilled, Kubrick's use of spatially impossible scenes, the themes and subthemes, the movie is an absolute masterpiece. King's book was a fantastic canvas, but Kubrick was the true artist with this one.

Shawshank is my pick for #2, Green Mile close behind that.

Loved the adaptation of 11/22/63, a little cheesy but really well done.
Also liked Silver Bullet

whoever mentioned Running Man.

That movie was a case where Arnold's one-liners actually worked.

I forgot about Under the Dome. Really liked season 1, but they couldn't tie it together and it just fell off after that.

I also liked the Outsider, it was on HBO this year, not great, but entertaining. The first couple episodes that Jason Bateman directed were hands down the best of the show.

The most disappointing one for me was Maximum Overdrive. the short story (Trucks) isn't one of his best but the movie was a big miss for me. When the song (Who Made Who?) is the best part of it you know it's a bad movie.

Reading the full list of movies and tv shows made off his writing that's a pretty impressive resume.

ditto for the Mr. Mercedes show. The Bill Hodges Trilogy was a little uneven (1-Good, 2-Great, 3-Bad) but overall enjoyable. The Outsider is the best thing he's written in 20 years or more. Just a great book, seamless in combining crime/mystery and the supernatural. But the show just fell flat for me.

Outsider is one of the few for me where I saw the show/movie before reading the book. I loved the first few episodes of Outsider, I didn't like the ending, but it got off to a good start. I still haven't read the book.
The Outsider (show)
UConn4523 : 6/24/2020 1:52 pm : link
started out great but lost its fastball as soon as most of the mystery was uncovered (about halfway through) and the ending was really underwhelming.

That said the production quality and acting were top notch so its definitely worth watching. Just not much of a payoff.
I meant to also add
UConn4523 : 6/24/2020 1:54 pm : link
that I read the book and its better because its a really hard thing to convey on screen. Won't say more than that on it since i'd need to discuss spoilers.
The Shining
elpeces : 6/24/2020 2:22 pm : link
When I was a little kid my Mom was reading the Shining one evening and as she reached the explosion part our fireplace lit up out of nowhere (wood burning, not gas). We hadn't had a fire going for days. My Dad was in law enforcement and was getting ready to work an overnight shift. My Mom made him call in and stay home.

Not my favorite but I didn't see "Sometimes They Come Back" mentioned at all. I remember liking it when it came out.

I thought the first 2 episodes of The Outsider were as good as any show I ahve ever seen. It was terrifying and weird and bizarre---filled with WTF moments but it was also relatable, so to speak. Then it just slowly got a little worse or less compelling. Not only was Bateman's directing top notch, the story was too. It was only downhill from there, but still worth the watch.

What's wonderful about great authors - they don't generally decline with age. King continues to write some really great books.
