Rosenblatt: If no Golden, 3 FA pass-rushers that could help

Big Blue '56 : 6/25/2020 8:38 am
Discussed at times, but they’re still out there

Quote:

1. Jabaal Sheard: He has ties to the Giants’ coaching staff, playing for the Patriots in 2015 and 2016, when he had a combined 13 sacks and 11 quarterback hits. He had 15.5 sacks the last three years for the Colts, and has played a hybrid defensive end-outside linebacker role before dating back to the start of his career with the Browns. He’s 31 and wouldn’t cost much.

2. Vinny Curry: The Giants should be looking for versatile pass rushers. Curry has the ability to play inside or outside on the defensive line — the Giants will use multiple formations — and he had his best season in 2014 (nine sacks) as part of a 3-4 defense. He was solid last year in his return to the Eagles with six sacks, too.

3. Clay Matthews: The 34-year-old still has some pass-rushing juice left in the tank. In a limited role for the Rams last year, he still had eight sacks in 13 games. Like Fackrell, Matthews was coached by Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham with the Packers in 2018, when Graham was the linebackers coach and run game coordinator.

I believe Golden will return
There are probably 5-6 edge rushers available who others might prefer
Ivan15 : 6/25/2020 9:15 am : link
Before Golden. If they haven’t been signed, I don’t think anyone is going to snatch Golden away from the Giants.

Also, can’t the Giants rescind the tender at any time and sign whoever they want?
if its a 1 year deal
UConn4523 : 6/25/2020 9:24 am : link
for any of these guys we should just go with the best one, so easily Golden for me.

If you could, would you sign Golden to a 3 year deal? Of course, I’m not certain what his contract should be.
correct me if I'm wrong
Giantsfan79 : 6/25/2020 9:31 am : link
but the Giants will automatically get Golden unless another team signs him by July 22 or start of training camp (whichever is later).

At that point Golden's only two options would be return to the Giants on a one year $4.125 million dollar contract or sit out all of 2020 because the Giants own his rights.

If that's true why would the Giants sign anyone when they get Golden by default.

I doubt they would, but if he signs elsewhere before the 22nd, these might be their options

If the guarantees were low then sure, but I can't imagine why he's sign that so I imagine that isn't doable. Its not that I don't like him, he's a solid player, hard worker and seems to be a great fit for what Judge wants to accomplish here but he isn't difference maker and at 29 years old he likely won't get better.
$4m for 10+ sacks
UConn4523 : 6/25/2020 9:43 am : link
and constant hustle is a steal. I feel bad for saying that because Golden would have cashed in by now in just about any other scenario but it is what it is.

This^.

You wait to see if we can get Golden back on his tender, as others noted. Everything we have heard about the guy in the locker room fits Judge's type of culture. And he did have 10 sacks last year despite abysmal back 7 play.
Decision to pay Golden $4.1M for one year is like
LBH15 : 6/25/2020 10:09 am : link
6 to 5 and pick em'.

Personally I would rather give the pass rush opportunities to a few others on the roster, but I could see the signing rational.

In no instance do I see a several year contract as the Front Office knows it needs to put to revamp the pass rush going forward, and Golden isn't a longer term piece.
I like the Clay Matthews idea as much or more than Golden
Eric on Li : 6/25/2020 10:11 am : link
he was in GB with Graham, he had 8 sacks and 2 FF in 13 games last year, and just seems a more natural fit for this defense than Golden.

Except, Matthews is 5 years older than Golden. If no golden, then fine, CM for 1 year be an option
If no Golden than CM for 1 year, could be an option,
Big Blue '56 : 6/25/2020 10:18 am : link
that should read
Should be interesting
Beer Man : 6/25/2020 10:26 am : link
With COVID-19 threatening the season and a very real possibility that the 2021 salary cap may see a reduction, I think teams are going to be very cautious when it comes to signing any of the remaining FAs
I wouldn't want to sign either player beyond 1 year
Eric on Li : 6/25/2020 12:44 pm : link
I don't think Golden is more than a stop gap pass rusher. Good hustle player but limited and also approaching 30.
Until the front and backends player better
JonC : 6/25/2020 1:15 pm : link
the pass rush will continue to be the last to the football.

The front needs to win the line of scrimmage and shut down the run. The back seven needs to play with cohesion and demonstrated knowledge of both their individual and unit assignments.

Win your man battle! Play to your tempo! Dictate to the offense! Get off the field on third down!

They need more talent at Edge. These players are stopgaps, nothing really to see here. Bring Golden back for a year (which they're trying to do) and see what the 2021 offseason brings for edge talent.

I do expect Judge will prepare his team much better than the last staff. Knowing what they're doing to a man will improve the unit quickly, if the talent is there.
... backend plays better

...
Golden was on a one-year 'prove it' deal in 2019.
George : 6/25/2020 1:41 pm : link
Personally, I think he proved it.

Hope we bring him back in 2020.

Then I hope we focus on pass rushers and linebackers next off-season, because Marcus Golden, in the end, isn't the long-term solution.
I really like the idea of adding Clay Matthews
Jay on the Island : 6/25/2020 6:03 pm : link
if Golden isn't back. I think that Matthews can still contribute if he is used as a situational pass rusher.

I like Sheard as well but In don't think Curry has anything left in the tank.
Agent
Dragon : 6/25/2020 8:06 pm : link
Would have to be a halfwit to let his client end up with only one loosing team with no negotiating power at all. I would have to say the clock has been ticking for them to sign a contract but I’m sure they realize this also.

The rest of the NFL doesn't think so. Golden didn't seem to have much of a market at all for a 10 sack guy. The book on him must be that that was an aberration.
I think the rest of the NFL
UConn4523 : 6/27/2020 7:28 pm : link
is confused on how exactly to move forward. Clowney isn’t getting what he wanted either.

Golden definitely earned a good contract, he picked the worst year for it. Timing is everything.
I would pass
RetroJint : 6/28/2020 6:41 am : link
on all of them , including Golden , who is a latter day Casey Merrill. He’s not worth 5M. Worse, he would be impeding the progress of younger players , who might turn out to be better than him.

Golden had a few of what Strahan used to call “piss” sacks that inflated his total .
$5m is not a lot of money
UConn4523 : 6/28/2020 8:46 am : link
and on a 1 year deal it makes no difference anyway. And you can’t expect Judge to only play young guys to get three reps, he’s building a program NOW and that starts with identifying who can do their jobs regardless of age.

Golden is a hard worker who’s gotten sacks in various ways including some cheap ones. But he’s a guy you want on your team and in your locker room. I don’t think he’s worth a long term contract but 1 year at that low cost is a steal.
I believe the Giants can withdraw the tender at any time
Ivan15 : 6/28/2020 9:29 am : link
Before or after the drop dead date. Am i correct?

That would leave them with a lot of flexibility to sign another Edge or any position player.

Right now, Golden may be the best value available.

Well, there is a reason Golden wasn't pursued hard despite a decent stats year.
I think Clowney wanted to much and is a bit over-rated.
If we sign Golden to a reasonable one year deal so be it.
