Kevin Zeitler Discusses Virtual Offseason; Prepping for 2020 Season - ( New Window )
Have a Question
Samiam : 6/25/2020 1:59 pm : link
Not able to listen but have had this question for awhile. If the Giants end up starting Gates or Lemioux, could Zeitler call the line signals at least until they get some experience at the position? For some reason. I vaguely recall the Giants doing something like this way back when but can’t remember specifics.

Only the moderators can do that. That said, NFL blocks their content from BBI.
What is that thing he is wearing?

I've heard of cutoff jeans, but a cutoff sweatshirt (with a hoodie)???

I wonder if he made it himself, or if he bought that off of a rack, somewhere on this planet?
Zeitler has as much experience at Center as Gates or Lemieux.

Just saying.

That’s Wasn’t My Question
Samiam : 6/26/2020 11:56 am : link
I was asking if Ziegler could call the signals playing RG while either Gates or Lemioux or someone else inexperienced at center focus solely on blocking the defender. Does it ever happen that someone who doesn’t play center call the line signals?

That was done many years ago from time to time depending on experience of certain centers. Not sure about today.

Interesting that Zietler has played some OC. I believe he'll be left at OG for sure.

As for line calls, well, perhaps if someone other than Pulley wins the job. Pulley has enough experience I'd think to do it.

Thomas-Hernandez-Pulley-Zeitler-Solder is still my opening day lineup and its based on experience & upside (Thomas). By season's end I'm praying Peart, Gates, Lemieux all show enough that we know we have our 2021 lineup on the roster.

he doesn't want to play OC

As for making the calls over Lemieux etc -- interesting question.

I'm sure he could do it since UW OLs are smart and well-trained 🤣

The thing is "can Zietler do it & is he willing to do line calls if say Gates wins OC job"? He has the NFL experience to do it but I'm not sure if it is easy to do from RG?

But I'm sure Pulley has enough NFL experience to handle it.
Zeitler makes the most sense to me

If you're going to ask Gates or Lemieux to do it, you're asking the same of Zeitler, learn a new spot. Zetler however, has the experience to make the transition easier than a rookie and a pretty much unknown in Gates. We don't know if those two are even NFL caliber starters yet, so wouldn't asking them to learn a new spot AND acclimate to the NFL be a worse option than moving a veteran?

Lemiux will end up an NFL guard if you ask me. He may end up learning OC as well but his game is most likely OG. Gates has played some and I like him as the top backup inside and second backup after Fleming at OT. Both are unknowns until proven otherwise.
Perhaps having Zietler make the line calls saves us problems?
But my bet is Pulley wins the OC spot simply cause he has experience to start the season.
Its harder to make calls from guard.

Both sides of the line need to hear you right up to the snap. As the defensive alignments shift, the protection shifts. The "Mike" needs to be identified. And all 5 players need to be on the same page as to what that call is.

If you're at RG, you're some distance from the LT.

It can be done, but this is a complicating factor.

Good points on hearing the line calls and being in sync. Makes perfect sense. It may be easier this year if stadiums are fairly empty, perhaps?
