What "great" Giants win are you mad you missed?

Eric from BBI : Admin : 6/26/2020 9:52 am
JonC's comment about only missing three games in 35 years made me think of this one...

Name the "great" Giants game that everyone still talks about that you missed.
2008 NFC Championship vs. Green Bay
CraigKupp : 6/26/2020 10:01 am : link
Missed pretty much the entire game because I was at a wedding. When I finally found out there was tv in another room where the game was on I walked in just as Tynes' kick was going through the uprights.
Haven’t missed a game since 1956.
Big Blue '56 : 6/26/2020 10:01 am : link
If I wasn’t able to go to one or it was blacked out (common in those days), I listened to it on radio. If I missed a game or two, I simply do not recall..

Didn't see a snap. 36-0 vs Skins. Must have been an ass whoopin
I'm like you guys.

Never missed a "great" game but I did miss the 1st half of McAdoo's win vs. the KC Chiefs in 2017. Was listening on the radio and flying down I-95S trying to get home in time. Icky feeling.
1986

I was sick and was unable to attend the George Martin interception game vs. Denver in 1986. My old man still makes fun of me about it all these years later.
41- 0 NFC Champ game against the Vikings
cjac : 6/26/2020 10:24 am : link
my idiot brother in law Christened his kid that day.

Who the heck does that on Championship Sunday?

I actually missed going to the game even though I could have gotten tickets.

:(

Did watch it on TV though...
I actually went to the Eagle game the week before though...

Not sure if "great" but sense that was the turnaround game that carried them to the championship that year.

the 2000 NFC Championship Game, I was given the opportunity to be at that game and stand on the sidelines with a press pass. Long-time BBI reporter David Oliver went. I turned it down. Why? Because I am superstitious as hell with football and I was on a losing streak of attending Giants games in person at that time.

David latter told me that players were coming up to him after the game simply hugging him because they were so excited they had just won.

Sigh.
It wasn't great but I'm pretty sure I was so hungover I slept through

that Titans loss some years back with Vince Young trampling all over us. Maybe someone can "refresh" my memory on that one.
'98 win over the undefeated Broncos
JonC : 6/26/2020 10:33 am : link
I think BB56 sent me the game on CD, have to find it!

Missed a chunk of the big win over the Redskins at RFK in '93 while terribly hungover, but had the VCR running.
I remember fighting to stay awake and we were up a few scores

so I gave in and next thing I know I'm watching the clock ticking out with the Titans winning.

NFC Championship game. I was working in maintenance department at a nuclear power plant and we had to support the plant for 24 hour coverage. There were the minimum amount of people there, and since I was the junior person in the department, I couldn’t get off that day.

Oddly enough, when I did get home and turned the game on, they were showing the replay of the fumble recovered by LT (at least I think I got that right).
Not great games but ones that come to mind...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 6/26/2020 11:11 am : link
1) '00 win in Cleveland. I was in Disney World.

2) '06 win vs. the Skins Columbus Day weekend. I was up in Montreal & couldn't find a bar that had the game. It was a pretty easy win.

3) '17 win vs. KC. I was visiting cousin down in Columbia, SC & there was some oyster festival so we went to that instead. Of course we end up at this brewery called River Rat & the game is in OT & we somehow end up winning vs. a good Chiefs team.

I missed the 98 game against the Broncos too. Was flying cross country for a wedding and didn't alter my plans because I assumed it was just going to be an ass kicking. Seemed surreal when I found out we won, and how we won.

I missed the '91 Tampa game for a wedding. The '98 Broncos game I had to fly red eye to LA to stage a build for a customer and it had to be tested and ready to ship first thing Monday morning. Long 48 hours. I remember watching the ESPN Gamecast on my laptop and being surprised as well!

decades.

Two memorable wins missed were the 1998 game versus undefeated Broncos, and the 2005 game versus Eagles where Eli hit Plax for big comeback win in OT.

That is so true. I remember getting off the plane in the Phoenix airport and going right to a nearby bar to get a score of how bad it was. I saw the final and then made my fiancee wait there with me until I saw it a second time to confirm I didn't read it wrong.

Went right to the hotel and flipped on ESPN and waited to see how it happened, which was the second best news of the day!

Yup, but what's weird is a lot of the recent games I just put out of my mind. It's not a win-loss thing either because I can remember losses from really bad seasons (Parcells, Handley, Reeves, Fassel, Coughlin).

But so much of the recent years is a bad blur that just blends together.

I don't know if that is a function of my age or a subconscious realization that this was an unpleasant team to root for. When I see highlights of the Odell Beckham catch now, for example, it doesn't bring a smile to my face.

The 1934 NFL Championship game against the undefeated Bears. Known as the "Sneaker Game." The Giants got 9 pairs of sneakers to improve traction in the second half. They went on to rally from a ten point deficit to beat the Bears 30-13.
4th and 17
David B. : 6/26/2020 12:12 pm : link
The Giants weren't televised in my area that week. My dad and I sat in the car listening to it on the radio.

I've been taping games for years going back to VCR. I don't always watch the games in real time. It's almost better if I don't. ESPECIALLY in the DOWN years, and especially if it's a loss. Losses affect my mood for a week, and it's not worth it to me to watch losses if I taped the game, and I know they lost. And even when they win, it's NEVER easy. They RARELY win by more than a TD. This team averages about 1 comfortable/blow-out win every 2-3 seasons. They ALWAYS stress you out till the bitter end. And I've watched plenty of those in real-time. But it's a lot less stressful and more enjoyable if I watch it later.

To me, football needs to be entertainment. Not misery. There's enough misery in life without adding more with something that's supposed to be entertainment.
Eli’s comeback against the Broncos in 2005
mfsd : 6/26/2020 12:37 pm : link
with 2 TD drives in the last 9 minutes or so, the last being the game winner to Toomer at the gun.

I was there with a buddy, both really hungover and facing a long drive home, so we bailed out with about 10 min left in the 4th quarter, with the Giants losing 23-10

We listened to Eli and the Giants comeback on the radio driving home, and said shit, I guess we can’t bail early anymore with Eli as our QB!

I think it's both. As I've gotten older it's easier to recognize when I'm wasting my free time and entertainment consumed isn't measuring up to my emotional investment. Still love the team, just don't die as much inside when they're torture to watch and analyze.

December 1, 1986 - Monday Night San Francisco 49ers
Reese's Pieces : 6/26/2020 2:00 pm : link
I watched the first half of this game with my stomach all tied up in knots. The Giants are losing, being shut out. At half time, trailing 17-0, I went to bed. Another Monday Night fiasco.

But before I turned in I stuck a VHS tape into the recorder and turned it on.

Next morning I didn't look at the tape or hear the final score. I went to work and around lunchtime I heard the game being discussed. The Giants had won?

When I got home I immediately rewound the tap. Mark Bavaro. Bulls his way downfield. The game hung in the balance until the last play, when Andy Headen burst through the line deep in Giants' territory and Montana had no time to throw.

Sorry I wimped out and didn't see it live, but happy the VCR had been invented.

Only missed 2 LT games, very few others since the late 60's

One was the opening weekend we beat the Eagles 17-0, I think. Good friend arranged a group trip to see the Bills play the Chargers, he was a huge Chargers fan. I was in Rochester at the time, a good staging place. Bruce Smith's first NFL seasonal game. The other I regret deeply as it was what Parcell's called LT's greatest game, that Saints game he played with one functional arm and dominated. The cable guy never showed up, always has bugged me.

I missed the 1996 Giants vs Lions game!

Somehow the 1996 New York Giants won a game 35-7.

Never got to see that Maurice Douglass pick six.

And a TD pass thrown by Tyrone Wheatley.

I also have to say that I missed the Mike Cherry incomplete pass to Brian Alford, but that's not a whole game, of course.

I missed a game on my wife’s birthday, which is in December, probably 17 years ago but I remember I brought a radio with an ear piece to the restaurant and that really pissed off my wife. I put the radio away. I want to say we were playing the Cards but, honestly don’t remember. It wasn’t a huge game but I don’t miss Giants games. For some reason I missed a game moving into my dorm room which was back in either 92 or 93 but I had the game on the radio mostly. Neither of these was a playoff game. Since TiVo and with the radio broadcast it’s pretty difficult to miss a game entirely. I time shift games a lot, especially since the team has been playing mostly meaningless games. I love to listen to Papa and Banks and Howard on the radio, but when the team is playing such lousy football, it’s hard to resist doing better things and then catching up without commercials on TiVo.

I have never seen a single snap of the game which ended Eli’s streak which I will forever refuse to watch; I couldn’t even bring myself to listen to that game on the radio. More so than the release of Simms, that was the blackest day I remember as a Giants fan.

On the plus side, the powerful magic spell you cast by staying home ensured a huge win.

Was in Hong Kong and listened on AFRTS shortwave radio. I think by the time I got it on the radio, it was mid-3rd quarter and Jim Gordon was describing the paper swirling around because of the wind. He also said the Giants were going to win because Washington could not move the ball at all. Was shocked he would say that mid 3rd quarter.
