NFT: Best communication device for an 11 year old?

SLIM_ : 6/26/2020 5:23 pm
I'm just looking for cheap suggestions for my son. He is 11 years old. I really have no interest in giving him another method to surf the internet/watch videos/etc but especially now that it is summer, it would be nice to be able to keep in contact with him when he is riding his bike, at friends, going to the pool by himself.

Any low cost suggestions are welcome.
if you don't want to get him a phone

then the Gizmo is a great option. But I think it might only be available though Verizon.

to different people... Here is a device that is compatible with all of the US carriers at $150.

Quote:

Pros
Feels substantial and well-built
Fingerprint sensor works great
There's a headphone jack
Compatible with all U.S. carriers
Seriously low price

Cons
Limiting amounts of RAM and storage
Very poor camera quality
Won't get any software updates
Micro-USB charging 🥴

Not out too much if it gets dropped and broken. Also check out Swappa for used devices ;)

The only reason to get someone a phone at that age is so you can track their movements and if they need help
When my son was 12, I think, we got him a flip phone

T0-mobile has an Alcatel. He still uses it at 15. It will probably be handed down to his brother this year and we will upgrade him. But, he was also an easy case, as he had no interest in a smart phone.
Light Phone II

Out of the box, the Light Phone II's core functionality includes calls, messages as well as an alarm and hotspot.

There is a customizable toolbox menu for the phone in which you can add/remove various additional features to your Light Phone II. Currently you can add a calculator or podcasts tool. Additional tools are in development and will be released ongoing as they become available. We're working closely with our early adopters to design these tools.

While considering additional functionality for the Light Phone II, it's important to remember all of the features it will never have. The Light Phone II will never have social media, email, news, or ads. Our tools are intentional, and there is a clear objective in opening the tool. There will never be an infinite feed. The device itself, with a small black and white screen, reflects this philosphy and inherently limits the phone's functionality.

If you already have Verizon wireless account, it’s only $5 per month for the service. If you don’t, it’s $15. The phone is a wrist watch style that can only call and send 30 preset texts (you can change them) to approved people that parents control with an app. You can call them, text them, and keep track of their location (you can set a boundary as well that will alert you if the phone goes out of it).

My daughter uses it and so does her best friend. They can call each other on it, which is interesting.
