NFT: Vacation Advice Needed - large group (10)

Danny Kanell : 6/28/2020 9:21 pm
Long story short, Covid has done a number on our vacation plans this summer. We originally had a trip to Jamaica booked for my daughters sweet 16 end of July. Had to cancel it.

Then, my sister in law invited us and some other family members to go to their Myrtle Beach condo that week. Group of 10 total (All from Long Island)

Now the mandatory 14 day NY quarantine has canceled that one.

We are in scramble mode and looking for last minute ideas. We are pretty much open to anything, a lake house, beach house, whatever. Anyone have any ideas on areas they can recommend? It’s 6 adults and 4 kids. We are open to any ideas right now since we all took off that week (7/25 - 8/1).

Thanks
it wont be glam

but you could probably get a pretty nice house on a lake in the poconos for relatively cheap.

Maybe Saratoga or Lake George
Eli Wilson : 6/28/2020 10:02 pm : link
Typically you cannot get a spot there in the summer, but with the Saratoga track not allowing fans, it's possible you could find something.

Both Lakes and towns make great vacation spots.
we did a trip to lake placid and vermont
DaddyM89 : 6/28/2020 10:40 pm : link
lake placid being home base for trip and did this weekend in Vermont which was great. Both great summer places and the breweries in Vermont are unreal if you like beer - especially the alchemist. They are also both very low as far as Covid. Vermont has many days had the least amount of new cases in their state and Lake Placid has had 2 total confirmed cases since the pandemic began. Great for families too with lakes to visit etc. Definitely would recommend and only 5-6 hours from Long Island.
Pick a destination and look for a house w/private pool
Matt M. : 6/29/2020 1:33 am : link
on Air BNB. We did that and found a place
Danny, be careful in Myrtle
montanagiant : 6/29/2020 3:04 am : link
Use to love it 10 years ago but it seems dirty and rough come night time
I know I overstated the obvious
Matt M. : 6/29/2020 4:09 am : link
I posted from my phone without finishing. The point was, we stopped focusing on the specific locale, and settled on a house near one of our potential destinations. For us, it was more important to have a private pool.
Outer Banks.
johnnyb : 6/29/2020 7:17 am : link
Houses on the beach that can accommodate your family and have a private pool.
Check out the Finger Lakes
RobCrossRiver56 : 6/29/2020 7:30 am : link
I just rented a house thru Finger lakes premier properties. On lake Seneca, sleeps 10, 4 rooms on the water with a boat house. Call them up, it's a large area I'm sure you can find something.
Good Luck...
Mt. Washington Valley or the Lakes Region in NH
Russ in Queens, NYC : 6/29/2020 7:48 am : link
Beautiful, lots to do, relatively close to NYC (6- 8 hours depending on traffic and how often you stop).
huh?

This is what we are doing. Going in two weeks. Still will technically supposed to quarantine when we get back because NC is seeing a rise in cases but the whole point of renting the house and staying at the beach was to have a vacation with good social distancing so we're planning on just coming back and doing our usual (which is good social distancing anyway)
Saratoga!
JohnB : 6/29/2020 8:43 am : link
Without the racetrack fans being there this summer, the place will be empty and rentals will be cheap.
North Beach Plantation hotel
Hazlet Giant's Fan : 6/29/2020 9:01 am : link
Anyone thinking of going to Myrtle now or in the future it's in North Myrtle Beach which strangely enough does not even border Myrtle Beach

The issue is if you travel to North Carolina, when you come back you’re supposed to quarantine.

I’m dealing with the same issue as the 14 day period overlaps with the start of school for us. It’s a tough decision as we know we will social distance while down there but also want to do our part to make sure schools open safely. Hopefully NC (and all other states for that matter) get dropped off the list soon, but I’m not too optimistic of that.
NY STATE...
x meadowlander : 6/29/2020 10:48 am : link
...Keep it north, CoVid is growing rapidly virtually everywhere else.

A lake house is a great idea, but you have to account for risk while travelling and while there.

We cancelled our beach house in Fenwick Island, De - not because of concerns with our family or Fenwick itself, but because of the trip itself (public restrooms, rest area's a risk) - we would be dealing with crowded supermarkets, stores - really limits what you can do when you're surrounded by high risk vacationers.

So, sadly, we cancelled. End of an 11 straight year stretch with this family.

Don't be stupid folks. Steer wide of densely packed areas, and don't presume that because a vacation spot has low CoVid counts today that it will be the same come late July or August.
Agree meadowlander

I cancelled my family vacation 3rd week of July next door in OC MD. Sadly been going 32 years, but gotta be smart and think bigger picture.
Kalahari and Great Wolf Lodge are open in the Poconos.

It is an option to look into.

Yes, if you want to find the MOST LIKELY place to catch CoVid, without a doubt Great Wolf and Kalahari are for you. Mobs, close proximity, people from out of the region, indoors, can't mask while swimming, hit's all the buttons for high risk criteria.
Danny, just curious about whether you have any concern about
yatqb : 6/29/2020 1:12 pm : link
you and your extended family being together for the week and perhaps infecting each other or others?

I’ve been very focused on social distancing since the pandemic started, but I see less and less folks wearing masks at resort areas up here in NH.

Agreed.
Supposedly, they are running at a reduced capacity. It will be interesting to see how that plays out over the next few weeks.
Yup. Gotta think big picture.

Changed my family vacation from beach house to camping.
x meadowlander : 6/29/2020 1:53 pm : link
Bought a travel trailer a few years back, worth it's weight in GOLD in 2020.

Instead of Fenwick, De, I'll be at Wellesly Island up on the St. Lawrence and Brennan's Beach on Lake Ontario.

Just get me the feck outta town!!

We aren't. Obviously there is some added risk but we've been pretty diligent. At some point, we have to branch out a bit. We've seen them for BBQs since Memorial Day. That's kinda when we started seeing family members again. But we're still keeping mindful of it and wearing masks in public places.

Thanks everyone. We are zeroing in on a lake house in the Poconos right now.
Danny, I appreciate your not taking my post as a criticism.
yatqb : 6/29/2020 4:49 pm : link
That wasn’t the intention, but in these crazy times there’s tons of sensitivity in all arenas.

Absolutely not! I know that wasn’t your intention. Listen, we are all new to this. Everyone of us. All sides have valid points. I’m just trying to use as much common sense as I can and try to sprinkle in some normalcy here and there.
Heading to Florida coast in a few days for 4th of July week
LBH15 : 6/29/2020 5:20 pm : link
Cases have picked up considerably in north Florida so I am hoping they do not have to shut down beaches again.
Travel to Vermont
skifaster : 6/30/2020 7:12 am : link
Vacation house rentals in the Stowe, Vermont area. Vermont gives you the opportunity to quarantine at your home before you arrive:

https://accd.vermont.gov/covid-19/restart/cross-state-travel

If you decide to quarantine at the house you rent they will do all your local shopping for you.

We just started the process of canceling our OBX rental
ron mexico : 6/30/2020 4:18 pm : link
We are still on the hook for a decent amount if it doesn’t re-rent, but the agent is optimistic that it will.

This sucks but can’t justify messing with the return to school or sports for a vacation.
