Unbelievably Tom Flynn actually scored three times on blocked punts during his tenure with the Giants....

#NYGiants opened 1988 season hosting the defending Super Bowl Champion Redskins. After falling behind 13-0 @Giants came back to tie and took the lead on @GaryReasons blocked punt and Tom Flynn TD return. It was the 3rd straight year Flynn scored on a blocked punt. #GiantsPride

I same the same thing to myself:
Wow, we had a lotta good players on those teams!
Can the Giants ever get back to that?

What stands out to me is (1) Parcells took a lot more chances than more recent Giants coaches (i.e., trick plays), and (2) the special teams units of those old teams aren't talked about enough.
Take this game, the Giants largely won it because of this blocked punt and the Pepper Johnson sack/Jim Burt score.
If you came to the Giants and walked into that locker room with those leaders....you knew it was give it your all or look for another team.
I remember a game vs the Lions when the Giants went into halftime down 20-0 and Carson tore up the locker room! They were a different team in the second half.
The fastest way to getting back to the top is to have those ferocious leaders in the locker room to shape the culture.

Now that you mention that... kinda reminds me of the way Vince Lombardi coached. By and large, he played it pretty conservatively and liked nothing better than running the ball with his power sweeps. But once in awhile he would pull out of his bag of tricks a change of pace play that caught everyone by surprise.

I do believe D. Jones is a leader. So is Saquon and believe it or not so is Solder. But no one seems close to Carson, Taylor, Reasons and company. This is a team sport. But today's NFL is different in that players have a "1 to 4" year window so building unity is harder.
@BigBlueVCR
I showed his 3rd TD on a punt block but in 1986 Tom Flynn got his 1st in the final game. He was cut by the Packers during the season #NYGiants signed him for depth because of Terry Kinard's knee. Flynn would get revenge on GB & you could see his smile as he scored #GiantsPride

Pepper Johnson was an underrated pass rusher. @PepJ52, not LT, held the #NYGiants single game sack mark (4.5) before @OsiUmenyiora broke it with 6 in 2007. In 1988, "Pepper Martin's" sack of Doug Williams caused a fumble that Jim Burt rumbled in for clinching TD. #GiantsPride

In Parcells' time, the backup QB was typically the holder, and that made the fake field goal a better option. Plus he was a gambler and he believed in challenging his team. He liked to go for it on 4th and short. Like, you guys are good enough to get this yardage, and if you can't get a foot when you really need one, you don't deserve to win a championship anyway. I think the players loved the confidence in them and rose to the occasion.
In recent years, the Giants weren't good enough to rise to the occasion, so gambling on fourth down has been a lot riskier.
Flynn was more of a “ball” athlete than a tackler . If memory serves , he played some QB in a pinch at Pitt U . He had an instinct for finding the ball.
Specials were a mixed bag under Bill . Sometimes they would cost the Giants games . Other times , like this game and the recently featured win over the Vikings on Halloween , they would prove to be the difference in a Giants win . Like Gary running from punt formation against the Niners

With a few dominant years thrown in there.
I miss George Young, Bill Parcells, and no Mara’s making football decisions.,
Remember his rookie year being a really good pass defender, and he just kept developing.
And of course the hit in Denver :)
