NFT: YoutubeTV price increasing by $15/mo

jlukes : 6/30/2020 1:11 pm
to $64.99

Adding viacom channels (holy shit, people still watch MTV and VH1)

What bullshit. So much for streaming alacarte TV
I'm not surprised

Was only a matter of time before the streaming services charged similar to cable or satellite. There probably will wind up no difference in the long run.
I think

these platforms are getting killed by online advertising drops. If you've noticed, YouTube is now playing multiple ads per video. Even pay streaming services like Hulu is now running a ton of ads for even just a 23 minute TV show.

Yup, between that an losing the bundled internet the cost savings just won't be there unless you cut out a ton of content.

What's sleazy about what Hulu does is that even their PAID content is ad-supported. Scumbags.
It's the main problem with Hulu

YouTube raising prices on TV streaming probably has more
to do with gauging the market and the demand, and not revenue drops in their other businesses.

Anyone switching back to cable and satellite is going to have to deal with the uncertainty of whether those services will exist in 2 years. If you have broadband and either a TV produced in the last 5 years or a $30 Roku you have far superior infrastructure and equipment than cable or satellite. AT&T is aggressively deprecating Uverse and DTV and pushing ATT TV stream for instance because they know the bloated equipment is becoming useless.

If you price in equipment and regional fees, you’ll be hard pressed to find 85 quality HD channels and DVR for 65.00 a month elsewhere. Truly sucks the price went up, but it was probably under priced.

For me I ditched DTV ($130 month) and now have:
- HBO Max (free through ATT broadband)
- Netflix 4K (15.99)
- Hulu/Disney/ESPN+ (15.99)
- Apple TV+ (Free through ATT wireless)
- Philo (19.99)
- Amazon Video (Free through Prime)
- HD Antenna

For $52 dollars, I have 50+ HD channels, HD local channels, and the vast majority of streaming content.
Great timing on this because I am looking for the best option(s)
Drewcon40 : 6/30/2020 2:59 pm : link
I just installed a TV where there wasn't an existing co-ax line to my verizon. I took the advice of many on this board and installed the HDTV antenna. ESPN and Thursday night games for the Giants will always have a local channel broadcasting.

For Mets/Yankees and Rangers/Knicks, I am looking for a service that offers SNY, YES, MSG and NBC sports. YouTubeTV does not offer MSG but seemed to be the best service. Too expensive now. FuBo (no ESPN), Hulu...I'll see what is available when sports returns.
Hulu has all except MSG
JonC : 6/30/2020 3:08 pm : link
I went with them anyway. Not sure anyone has MSG for streaming.

Optimum charges $10 a month for every TV I want to have cable on. I have 5 Tvs in my house, so that is an additional $40 a month right there. Then throw having to use their shitty altice routers rather than my own mesh network, not being able to stream TV from anywhere in the country.
I wish I could get an antenna, but I am technically closer to Philly
jlukes : 6/30/2020 3:49 pm : link
than NYC and I would need a monster antenna to pick up NYC network stations
Im sticking with Direct TV as long as they have Sunday Ticket

My current bill is right around $50 including HBO. I do the old cancel-call once a year and they always throw me good discounts.

Your Apple TV through ATT Wireless: how do you get your Wireless signal ported to your big screen TVs (assume you do)?

We live in a crappy area for VZ Wireless to begin with, and living in a hilly area about 55 miles outside Manhattan, I'm not sure if an HD Antenna will do much good.

For the first time
aimrocky : 6/30/2020 5:04 pm : link
I'm debating streaming sites over traditional cable. My promotional rate with Spectrum expires in August and I fear they won't roll over the promotion. I'm currently paying roughly $170 a month for TV, Internet and landline (needed for our security system) but moved to Roku's through out the house with a traditional cable box/dvr in the living room that constantly freezes. Spectrum's app runs TV service very well using the Roku, so a cable box isn't necessary.

My hesitation is the local channels, for Giant games, and MSG. I'm not someone who can stream off some site and watch in a shitty format, so I would need something that delivers local channels. I was debating DTV Now. I believe they have it all besides NFL Network, which isn't a big deal.

All that being said, if Spectrum keeps me at the promotional rate, I'll re-up with them.
Loved playstation vue
charlito : 6/30/2020 5:05 pm : link
but it ended in January. So we went with YouTube TV which is the next best. People are stuck in the house, so a $15 increase is not surprising.

I made a similar comment to my friend, I'm in martech and companies marketing budgets are iced all over the place till 2021. Not a good sign for the overall economy.
The benefit for me is the flexibility
Ben in Tampa : 6/30/2020 5:22 pm : link
Instead of being locked into years long contracts, fees and equipment rentals I can just spin up a subscription, binge what I want to watch and then cancel it the next month.

It was never about cost savings for me.

... Although I write off my home office Internet, so that doesn’t hurt.
Sooner or later these streaming services
Dave in Hoboken : 6/30/2020 5:39 pm : link
will be just as expensive as Cable. That's almost as expensive as my cable bill. I'll keep the cable and keep my live sports without having to hook anything up or buying an antenna. F that.

It's just cable TV, but on the Internet. The offer is the same, you pay for a whole basket of channels when you only watch a few.

I'll remain with Fubo (and if they piss me off for some reason than YTTV) over Cablevision thank you very much. The experience is better and it's still considerably cheaper than what I was paying.

Same here (actually IIRC we live near one another). I'd love to switch to a streaming TV provider, but they all only provide Philly stations in my area. FIOS gives me NY and Philly stations. That makes the small bump over just FIOS internet worth it.
I'm not happy about the price increase...
BamaBlue : 6/30/2020 7:14 pm : link
None of these channels appeal to me and I already get all but one with Philo. I wish there were an option for people to opt-in for this, or at least a better selection of channels (e.g., NFL Network, MSG, History Channel, etc.)

I don’t think so. People want a la carte but they will be paying more that way unless you only care about a few channels. By aggregating they can drop the per channel price for the user. The flexibility around it is why it will stay, just cancel anytime unlike cable where you have to jump through hoops.

ATT has MSG. I kept them all through NBA season and then switched to Hulu LiveTV. ATT TV is ok, but their service was always more unstable than Hulu or YoutubeTV. Lots of playback errors and buffering, or at least more than I wanted to deal with.

You can still use your own mesh network, but it will be in addition to the Altice wifi signal. They altice boxes speak with each other via their own wifi signal and there is no way of disabling it.
