What if they play a few games and then call it off?
Do all the contracts carry over? Do they extend by one year?
What about the players on one year deals like Fackrell? Golden?
Do players get to go through free agency again?
So much uncertainty when the League and the Union both have control !
No one knows.
If there is no season at all I think that the contracts will roll over another year but I bet the league gives each player a certain amount of money in advance..
If a year is subtracted then the league runs as normal as it can.
The players will have a gripe either way. If a player wants to get to FA like Leonard Williams to secure a long term deal he'll be pissed if contracts don't subtract a year. Then you can have aging vets that have a nice contract right now that don't want to lose a year off their contract and lose out on a year's salary when they most likely aren't getting another contract or at least the same value.
Long story short, there is no perfect solution.
I think what will drive this decision is the salary cap number. Odds are the number will increase. With all the lot revenue on ticket sales can they make that back with advertisements? You'd have to figure the number drops. If the number drops then how can you have a team of players where contracts increase? A ton of teams would be over the cap. Philly and Dallas come to mind. They have to make some cuts to get under the cap for next year's projected cap and they aren't small numbers either.
My suggestion was if the cap drops they should "borrow" from future years. The advantage is that it'll lessen the blow on teams now and have the league run as smoothly as possible. The downside is for the next X years the growth will not be what the players want hence their contracts won't be as lucrative as they expected them to be. Someone like Dak would lose some serious money.
Again, no perfect solution and it'll have to be negotiated.
I mean aside from the cancellation of the HOF game, what has been announced or reported?
I googled "Vegas Odds NFL season starts on time?" and the most recently dated response that actually adressed the question was from March 30th.
That article noted "a recent decline in the odds the season will start on or before Sept. 13th" and "recently fluctuating odds the season will start on time."
I'm thinking no way the season starts on time now given the broader news re the pandemic. Such as NJ's recent delay in reopening indoor seating (even on a minimalist 25% basis, as initially planned) in restaurants.
How the heck can the league guarantee employees' safety? How will they go forward if 25% (or more) of teams' employees request to sit out, or work only from home, DURING the season?
Who the heck knows at this point? No one, but you can bet it's being discussed, hush hush, somewhere. Over Zoom....
Does Cincinnati get the pick to trade away?
Do the Giants get another (badly needed) #4 overall pick?

Correct.
