Lets discuss the NFC East

George from PA : 7/2/2020 10:48 am
Success in the NFL starts with success in ones own division....something Giants have not had for nearly a decade.

One does not need to go much further then The Cowboy OL and the Eagles DL to understand why.

Both those unit have dominated the Giants....the Giants OL could make many teams front 7 to look great and their lack of pass rush is highlighted when Dak can stand in the pocket for 3, 4, 5 seconds.

I would say the Eagles are the team to beat in NFC East...being the most stable of the teams with this nutty pandemic offseason. They improved their WR unit and added a stud corner...but the OL seem to have some cracks, and hopefully the DL is starting to age.....Wentz is probably the best in the division but enough red flags to warrant a 2 RD QB pick. Maybe not this year, but I believe their dominance is coming to an end.

Dallas might be viewed as the team to beat in division....i don't. I am not a believer in their new coaches...the cap advantage is over. They still rely on a dominant OL....but losing their allpro center hurts and the studs are long in the tooth. I hope the dominant hold on the Giants end this year.

The Redskins are not be as bad as everyone thinks....if their QB steps up....they can do some damage...but everytime I hear people complain about the Giants ownership....i thank god we do not have snyder.

I say, we can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel. We might not be out of the tunnel yet...Daniel Jones growth goes as expected, OL develops and Defense gels....we are setting up for a nice run...accumulation of talent has gone in the right direction.

Discuss.

seems to have an inherent advantage this year as they are the only team in the division that hasn't changed coaching staffs.

Losing the OTAs, mini-camps, and half the preseason is a really big deal to the Giants, Cowboys, and Redskins.
I think the standings will go Eagles, Boys, Giants, Skins. But the

Giants and Skins will both show improvement. I also like the Giants accumulation of young talent. They should challenge for the division lead in 2021.

Agree. The giants need another season (hopefully) with young players growing into their roles and spending the offseason acquiring defensive talent and a playmaker or two
Eagles are the team to beat

they are well run, have a good coach and front office. They will be there every year. Injuries seem to be the only thing that slows this team down.

Dallas, always looks like a top contender on paper, but they always under perform. They gave out a ton of money to Zeke and Cooper. Now they have to pay Dak? Their line is getting older and injuries are starting creep up. I don't see McCarthy doing any better than Garrett did. Zeke's got alot of miles on him already. He hasn't matched his numbers since his rookie year, and with the line losing pieces he may never get back to that.

DC? they are a mess, the one thing they have going for them is River boat Ron. He's a good coach and I bet they will be better than we think. Haskins is the key here, if he plays well, and they finally have a healthy Guice then they could contend.

NY? Defense, Oline, QB in that order. We were in a ton of games last year even with our shit oline. If the Defense plays a little bit better, we are not picking top 5 this year. See 1st Philly game with Eli as an example. Oline has to gel, let's hope AT is the real deal and not Flowers pt 2. I want to put the OLine issues behind us.. it's been 9 freaking years since we had an "Ok" oline.. jeezus. Last, djones.. keep progressing and protect the ball, Barkley will take a load off of him. I think we are 7-8 / 8-8 this year, with eyes on the division next year.
I agree with you opening post.

To add that while we have a lot of work to do on our end, we may have the brightest upside with our OL in the division. Its not happening overnight and they need to develop but I like the direction we are headed in.

Philly's OL never really got the recognition they deserved. They were pretty damn good but dont have Jason Peters, they did/could lose Kelce. I can't remember. Was he contemplating retirement? Dillard has been disappointing. They lost Brooks (sp?).

Look at Dallas, like you said. They lost. Frederick. Smith is up there in age. They, like the Eagles, are still good but the decline is here.

Considering the future, we have to be happy about Thomas, Peart, and Lemieux. Gates played well but we need to see where he plays and how well. Then you also look at Hernandez and Zeitler. Hernandez took a step back but with a competent OC and a no nonsense OL coach I think we are all hoping this unit turns into a strength sooner rather than later. And Judge also helps were he is not just preaching earning your job but truly believes it. We've missed that for a long long time.
I have no idea what to expect
djm : 7/2/2020 11:36 am : link
but I think Dallas is the best team in the east on paper. Their D took a hit, and their OL has taken hits lately too, but they still have a very good offensive team and the D is far from bad. Philly is the most sound team and has the ring from 2 years ago so they have some built in karma and toughness than Dallas doesn't posses. But Philly is vulnerable along the OL and WR and we know that OL goes a long way to success or failure these days. PLus Wentz does get hurt.

It would be nice if the Giants restored balance to the universe and left their mark all over this division. I don't want to say it's ripe for the taking, but it kind of is. Can we fucking start playing good football again and sustain it ? for the love of god...
Philly still has holes in their secondary and LB units

Eagles will take this division unless they get hit hard by injury
SGMen : 7/2/2020 11:58 am : link
An injury to Wentz would bring them to the pack. Outside of that, with their superb coaching staff, they win this division.

The Giants may start 1-3 or even 0-4 as they face four straight teams with returning systems to start the season. I just don't see how a short 0ff-season produces early wins.
I think todays NFL....every team has holes

And when injuries hit....even more holes.

The Giants young core is looking up...
Get a little lucky...

I hope Coleman shows his 1st Rd pedigree.

I hope L.Williams responds to all of his detractors with a strong effort..at the ripe old age of 26...should be hitting his prime.

A ton of moving parts in secondary...but all young with talent.

OL still not set....but as a unit as a whole has not been this deep ever. I like having 9 deep with starting potential....4 actual tackles with 3 that can play LT. I remember years...starting with no LTs

It will be

The Eagles and Cowboys for the foreseeable future. Both have collection of talent and draft very well for the most part. Until the Giants show they can win consistently in the division, they will be a cellar dweller. That goes for this year and well beyond.

If the oline can produce and DJ is a legitimate top qb, that will change very quickly. This will be a big year for the Giants - if the season happens- either the arrow will be pointing up or they will be drafting near the top of round 1 again, at which point everything will be blown up once again.

As noted elsewhere in this post as well, I agree about the OL. The problem for us this year is "how much will these young guys learn??" - we will have a limited camp. My prayer for 2021 has been:

Thomas-Hernandez-Lemiuex-Zeitler-Peart with Gates backing up every OL spot. Yes, wishful thinking but hey a man can dream?

But seriously, we have 3 young guys and I truly like them all because they all played a lot in college! We have a lot of college experience coming to a shortened training camp and probably shortened season. I would LOVE to see the 2021 unit play at least 2 games (Lemieux, Peart, Gates) Yeah so they get a taste of NFL speed. Nothing beats experience.
Initial advantage to the Eagles because of continuity ... but

This season (if it happens) is going to be unlike any other and the uncertainties due to the virus are a bit of a leveler ... the organization that can adjust the best and adapt on the fly will win out. I think Dallas wins on paper but I think McCarthy is their weak link ... Rivera is a very good coach but will be weighted by Danny and will have the added noise from the idiots on name change. The Giants are an unknown.
baaahahahahahahaha

I've been reading some variation of this almost every offseason here for 20+ years now.

the NFCE is almost always the same

1 of Dallas/Philly will have a good year, the other will be disappointing but hover around .500.

Washington will win between 3 and 8 games. That's basically all they do. And as much as I think Rivera may be a little underrated, I'm also not a Haskins believer.

The Giants are the wild card. They've been awful lately but the possibility of Jones being very good is being discounted for some reason. Judge is a total unknown and what we've seen of the defense isn't comforting so I wouldn't bet the house on them or anything, but if Jones takes any sort of significant step forward he's going to break a lot of NYG records.

I think a lot of our potential success will be centered around the health of our key players! If the starting OL is set by the 1st pre-season game and stays healthy through camp we at least have a chance to build cohesion.

I like Jones. I just do and yes that is fanspeak. I see him tossing it all over the field. I see Barkley leading the team in catches and becoming the superstar bar none at RB in this league despite having at best an average OL.

The Redskins, well, hard to say as I too am not sold on Haskins just yet.

I can see Philly's defense being below average, especially if injuries hit.

To me, in a shortened season as I suspect it will be, the key may just be "who is healthier & whose QB is best" kind of thing.
I like our QB. The health I leave up to prayer.

Florida Florida Florida. Giants fans should say Judge Judge Judge. Our youth can only be masked by great coaching. Every win over 6 is his.

to take control of the division over the past decade because they let their offensive and defensive lines fall apart.

Until we start pushing people around more in the trenches the same will continue.

The NYG's fell off when their OL began to really collapse in 2012, especially second half of the season. We drafted poorly and caught bad breaks in UFA and such. Eli had no OL of merit and it showed.
That is why I am really looking forward to this season and camp: to see the progress of the young guys in the trenches (Thomas, Peart, Lawrence, Lemiuex, Gates, BJ Hill, McIntosh, Williams) as these young guys (26 and under all...I believe) will either form the nucleus for a great future to build on or we get a really early pick in 2021.
I really want to see the OL start (smart play) the season with a healthy group of:
LT Thomas-Hernandez-Pulley-Zeitler-Solder and as the season goes we see a progression to possibly,
LT Thomas-Hernandez-Gates-Zeitler-Peart - see these young guys finish out the year and show they belong.

If these young guys belong on the OL we can build around Jones and Barkley for 2021.
The DL is stronger, a bit more polished, and all we need is for Ximines, Carter and Golden to bring heat and this defense will be strong after a few games of settling into the new system and each other.

Say what? that makes zero sense? I mean, 2 games minimum where starters go 2-3 quarters was what I figured would happen.
