NFL Network; Top 10 Giants

joeinpa : 7/3/2020 7:19 am
10. Tikki Barber
9 Phil Simms
8. Harry Carson
7. Eli Manning
6. Sam Huff
5. Mel Heimbach
4. Frank Gifford
3. Michael Strahan
2. Rosie Brown
1. L. T.

As a fan since 56, I saw all these guys play, except Heim, and really don’t have much push back of the list; I expect younger fans will.

Anyone you would replace with another player of choice?
I’m a younger fan 32 years of age
Tuckrule : 7/3/2020 7:27 am : link
To me, Simms doesn’t belong on this list. I think Justin tuck, who should have been mvp in 07 super bowl deserves to be on the list. Arguably the 3rd best defensive player in giants history behind LT and strahan. He had longevity, stats and showed up in the biggest games. Tuck needs to be on the list or I may be a young naive fan. Am I wrong? Maybe Simms isn’t the guy to remove but tuck needs to be there

shouldn't that be Mel Hein?

No problem with that list. Maybe the order needs adjusting. Maybe switch Eli and Frank?

Over Tiki
Tunnell
90.Cal : 7/3/2020 7:44 am : link
Had 79 interceptions in 154 career games
Tunnell over Simms,
Big Blue '56 : 7/3/2020 7:50 am : link
Eli and Gifford ahead of Strahan
I love Strahan but not sure he should be #3

Over Tiki

No. While YA was a great QB he came late to the Giants, while Tiki is the best RB in Giants history and 2nd on the receiving list, IIRC.
Tunnell cannot be left of that list
BillT : 7/3/2020 8:21 am : link
And probably deserves to be in the top 5.
Simms belongs.....
edavisiii : 7/3/2020 8:35 am : link
You were not around, the emergence of Simms after he sat the bench is one of the factors that brought the Giants out of the worse stretch in their history. When he tookover in 84 they made the playoffs, got better in 85 and won the Superbowl the next year. His SB performance is among the best ever! He doesn't get credit for the Bills win but he brought them to the playoffs, when he got hurt they were already in! I love Justin Tuck...role model.... he had 5 great years but not he impact Phil had on the franchise Plus his career was short, if you put him in then what about Bavaro?????

Not surprised you feel that way. At 32 you probably feel Eli is best Giants quarterback of all time, not close.

Bit some of us older fans, maybe many, would pick Simms over Eli. IMO, they both belong on list.
were is...

Jake Ballard?
I don't know how Tunnell was left off the list.
Elisha10 : 7/3/2020 10:28 am : link
There is a book called, "The 50 Greatest Players in NY Giants History." They rank Tunnell second. Art Stapleton in north jersey.com also recently ranked Tunnell second in his 100 Greatest Giants list. My list is:

1. Taylor
2. Hein (won MVP as a center!)
3. Brown
4. Tunnell
5. Gifford
6. Strahan
7. Carson
8. Manning (Our best QB, but not better at his position than those ranked before)
9. Simms
10. Conerly (Always underrated, won a championship and an MVP)

I can make the case that Huff, Robustelli, and Tittle belong on the list more so than Manning, Simms, and Conerly. But, being a championship winning franchise QB who spent their entire 14 plus year career with us means more to me than HOF players that spent significant time with other teams. I don't know how Tiki Barber even made their list. He is within the top 20, no where near top 10.

SI also has a descent list, only one besides me to rank Hein second.

They mostly did a very good job with that list.

My one major complaint is the absence of Emlen Tunnell. He was regarded as the best safety to ever play prior to Ed Reed in the early 2000s. He's on the NFL 75th and 100th Anniversary lists. Its crazy that they missed him.

I'd slot Tunnell somehwere in the top 4 (with LT, Brown & Hein) and bump Barber.
Sorry, But its LT or ELI at #1
SGMen : 7/3/2020 12:26 pm : link
Strahan, Simms, Tuck, Brown certainly all belong and Carson too due to longevity.
Sometimes in picking greatness
sec308 : 7/3/2020 2:54 pm : link
there has to be a determination of is they guy a winner. I understand the love for Tikki because he was a phenomenal back but he was a let down over and over again, whether it was a crushing game losing fumble, or how he couldn't stick it out and let Eli be the leader, he always let us down. Let me ask you this with these players with knowledge of their Giant careers (only giant career) who would you draft Tikki or Carl Banks, Tikki or Justin Tuck, Tikki or Plaxico Burress, Tikki or Kiwanuka, Tikki or Bavarro. I could go on but my point is when I look back on those teams during the Fassel era I felt that the players were self absorbed, looking for fame (I include Strahan but he stuck it out) and let downs. I wouldn't put Tikki before OJ Anderson! You need to be a winner to be great.
Eli ranking is laughable.

Not a bad list at all.

It’s Tiki...sorry. Couldn’t take it.
Ugh I even double checked the list up top.

I don’t think too many objective fans could rank Eli as # 1 Giant
Eli needs to absolutely be in the top 3 or so
LBH15 : 7/3/2020 9:57 pm : link
The list is fair but needs some juggling.
Eli won a ton of games and two impossible titles for us
Phil in LA : 7/3/2020 10:51 pm : link
he shouldn be no lower that 2.
Eli has to be top 5
uconngiant : 7/4/2020 1:28 am : link
I've watched the Giant's since the 60's and he has to be at least that high.

1. LT
2. Tunnel
3. Brown
4. Eli
5. Hein
6. Strahan
7. Gifford
8. Robustelli
9. Huff
10. Carson
Bavaro for Tiki
Rolyrock : 7/4/2020 5:33 am : link
Wish I knew the older Giants.
What are the criteria?
CT Charlie : 7/5/2020 12:44 am : link
If it's the impact on the history of the franchise, then Eli belongs near the top. If it's best players, period, then you could ask the question, "Which Giants player would you most want to have on your team?" or "Who's the most talented?" It's unlikely that Eli would be ranked nearly as high. I say this as someone who thinks Eli in the HOF is a no-brainer.
Eli is the longest tenured Giant ever at 16 years...
Britt in VA : 7/5/2020 8:02 am : link
And started, or was healthy and available to start all 16 of those years.

Good point Larry. Too many people offended by Tiki's ignominious departure, but yes Tunnell for Tiki would be fair.
Tiki hate is personal, but what he did accomplish as a Giant is irrefutable. #1 rusher and #2 receiver.
I have ZERO
Spider43 : 7/5/2020 2:35 pm : link
Problems with that list.
Eli
MookGiants : 7/5/2020 4:31 pm : link
is top 5 at worst. That's laughable.

No love for Dave Jennings?
short lease : 7/5/2020 5:36 pm : link

I know he was a punter but, at 1 time (in the 70's) he may have been the best player on the team (Harry Carson aside).
