first of all, Thummans hot dogs are the best period....

I am starting to enjoy them with hot banana peppers and mustard.

Chili and diced red onions

If you grill the hot dogs well done where they rip open and get slightly burnt, then ketchup works well.

mustard and kraut is my go to at home. However the two greatest hot dogs I have ever had out was the chili dogs served at a little stand in Old Saybrook CT called Putters and the Chicago dog served at Portillo's in the greater Chicago area. By the way those of you that don't like kraut, try adding a little chopped onion and brown sugar when you're heating it.

(But get their Italian beef too)

but when driving through Cleveland and stopping at Happy Dog, I tried Michael Symon's topping choice of chunky peanut butter, Sriracha, and alien pickle relish and it was actually damn good.

Brown mustard if you must (not as good).

I don’t get the onions or relish one bit.

If you put ketchup on a hot dog, you should be drawn and quartered (see mustard on a hamburger).

watered down Coors Light.

stick with the classics. Gulden's spicy brown and sauerkraut. When I'm in the mood I skip the mustard and kraut and go with sauteed onions

Anybody else out there that used to love the Hot Dogs from Grovers Pig Stand? My go to was their Hot Dog with everything. Grovers Pig Stand was located on the river side of the main drag between Endwell and Endicott. Near where Lupo's Char Pit is now located.

Cheese and onions from Big Moe's hotdog truck South Ave and the SIE service Rd on Staten Island back in the day.

They sell a product called hot dog relish, it is mustard and relish mixed together. Quite common.

Me, I usually just do a little brown mustard.

I like a sauerkraut dog or chili dog now and again.

That's what Gray's Papaya here calls it. Sauerkraut and onions. Though sauerkraut and mustard work just fine too.

About 10 minutes years ago my wife and I took a trip to Chicago for a few days because we both had never been but wanted to visit.

We went to Wrigley for a game and there I had my first Chicago style hot dog. It was amazing.

mlb network is currently airing the mets/braves 19 inning game.

But I didn’t even think relish was still a “thing”. It was a staple at family BBQs when I was a kid but I don’t think I’ve seen that stuff at a BBQ spread in over 20 years.

Growing up, a place in town (Harrisburg) had this "sauce" simply called Chili-Onions that was basically sauteed, caramelized onions mixed with a nice dark chili sauce.

I've seen a few recipes online but none have captured that flavor

It is. Been having them this way for as long as I can remember, even as a kid. This was dad's hot dog. And got to use a good quality dog, or as good as you can get from a supermarket. For me it's Nathan's or Hebrew National. Oh and don't forget to grill or toast the bun.

I’ve had chili dogs, but it’s always to watery and not enough meat, that was until I’ve had the Best Chili on a dog ever! Vienna Inn in Vienna Virginia has the BEST Chili !!! Oh man was that great I bought a tub of chili to bring home!!

Until I had two daughters, who in our home grew up on crepes more frequently for breakfast than pancakes. In fact at some point one or another of the two let out with a "what crepes again?" complaint one weekend morning.


So at age 10 or so, when their favorite (and only) topping on a hot dog was ketchup, I merely winced and accepted it.

Even worse than that, BTW, was that the ketchup was often destined for their favorite hot dog - corn dogs!

My father is a warm butter diehard for lobster rolls.

I do enjoy it that way too, and it would be my preference.

but I have also eaten them with mayo - some places only make them that way.

My point isn't that I don't have a preference for things, of course I do, and there are things I would only eat prepared a certain way or expect to buy prepared a certain way based on region or other variables.

My point is that I don't care what other people do with their food.

I think ketchup on a hotdog is gross, and it is something I think is basically for kids, but if someone says I like ketchup on my hotdog I don't give a shit. I think pineapple on pizza is also an abomination but if someone orders it I don't get crazy about it, I don't care.

Some people really seem offended by how other people enjoy their food.

Agree, I lived in Germany for a time during my college years, and a curry wurst was a regular late night snack when returning from a Gasthaus. In the States I like Ketchup, Mustard, White Onion, and Cole Slaw

But years ago when I lived in North Carolina, they had a combo they called "Messing-up the Dog". It was Chili, Coleslaw, and Yellow Mustard,

has simply the best dog I've ever eaten -- it's basically a Reuben sandwich, in hot dog form. I bought a second one on the way out of the game.
