While I tend to gravitate to Nathan’s on those rare occasions I want a hot dog, I’m going all in tomorrow with the foot long homemade dog from my local butcher.
I will go with kraut and yellow mustard and I’m happy. Brooklyn represents. My wife however is all about green relish and brown mustard. My first born son has a thing for onions on his which I don’t get. And while I would not personally put ketchup on a hot dog, whatever floats your boat.
Where does BBI stand?
(p.s Is Yellow Hot Dog Relish still a thing?)
I don't really eat hotdogs anymore. Occasionally I will have turkey dogs with quality mustard.
How does relish and mustard go together? That sounds awful.
Couldn't resist, could you?
I like a Chicago style dog, which I understand to be a slice of tomato, a quarter wedge half sour pickle and onion with mustard. I might have that wrong... but remember enjoying Chicago style dogs.
I like sauerkraut, too, but don't often have that on hand.
I never get the ripping of ketchup, as long as you don't put a lot on it. I mean, I get that people think it can drown out the taste of the dog, but smothering it with chili and cheese is ok? Just seems weird to me.
Actually started fermenting my own sauerkraut 2 1/2 weeks ago so it'd be ready for the 4th.
Relish and mustard is a good combo.
An occasional chili dog works.
Never catsup. And if anyone suggests mayo, shoot them.
Dirty water dogs - red onion, mustard, sauerkraut
Yeeechhh!!!!
+1
But I will admit if I'm out of brown mustard, I'll go frou frou and put whole grain Dijon mustard instead of spicy brown. What some producers call Moutarde a la Ancienne...
I suppose that sorta elevates the hot dog to a type of chocrouterie?

THere should be a constituional amendment banning ketchup on hot dogs! :-)
A weeks worth of cooking slime is what you need for authentic taste, then the toppings are a matter of personal choice. A steady diet of these and an occasional knish is a guarantee for CAD before you turn 40.
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg and howlet's wing,
Wait a minute. That is the hot dog itself, not the topping.
Spicy brown mustard with a pickle slice
Pimento cheese spread - this is a new one for me, we had a pimento cheese spread yesterday and last night I thought to try it on a hot dog. It was delicious.
I am starting to enjoy them with hot banana peppers and mustard.
Chili and diced red onions
If you grill the hot dogs well done where they rip open and get slightly burnt, then ketchup works well.

But don't you dare put any ketchup on that fine cut of meat! ;-)
I don’t get the onions or relish one bit.
If you put ketchup on a hot dog, you should be drawn and quartered (see mustard on a hamburger).
That is all.
I can eat a chili dog, but not my favorite.
I once beat the Fenway challenge with this. a hot dog and a beer every inning. all my hot dogs had chopped onions (and yellow mustard, but still good).

Bud Light?
Or Sam Adams?

watered down Coors Light.
I hate mustard in all its forms

They sell a product called hot dog relish, it is mustard and relish mixed together. Quite common.
Me, I usually just do a little brown mustard.
I like a sauerkraut dog or chili dog now and again.
LOL!
Forgot about corn relish! That shit is the bomb. Trader Joe's makes a great one with green chilies added.
Extra Dallas hot sauce on the side with an order of shoestring french fries
The rest is ok. To each is own but if hid going to go nuts w toppings go to Jimmy Buds or Rutt’s Hutt.
We went to Wrigley for a game and there I had my first Chicago style hot dog. It was amazing.
Occassionally, I'll have relish, but, not usually

I've seen a few recipes online but none have captured that flavor
that sounds fuckin awesome.

Chopped raw onion on the other and deli or brown mustard down the middle.

It is. Been having them this way for as long as I can remember, even as a kid. This was dad's hot dog. And got to use a good quality dog, or as good as you can get from a supermarket. For me it's Nathan's or Hebrew National. Oh and don't forget to grill or toast the bun.
I’ve had chili dogs, but it’s always to watery and not enough meat, that was until I’ve had the Best Chili on a dog ever! Vienna Inn in Vienna Virginia has the BEST Chili !!! Oh man was that great I bought a tub of chili to bring home!!
Until I had two daughters, who in our home grew up on crepes more frequently for breakfast than pancakes. In fact at some point one or another of the two let out with a "what crepes again?" complaint one weekend morning.
So at age 10 or so, when their favorite (and only) topping on a hot dog was ketchup, I merely winced and accepted it.
Even worse than that, BTW, was that the ketchup was often destined for their favorite hot dog - corn dogs!
I wouldn't do either, but I don't care if you do both.
Nothing wrong with preferences and/ or good-natured food debates.
Not disagreeing with you just throwing out another example of regional/personal differences.

My father is a warm butter diehard for lobster rolls.
I do enjoy it that way too, and it would be my preference.
but I have also eaten them with mayo - some places only make them that way.
My point isn't that I don't have a preference for things, of course I do, and there are things I would only eat prepared a certain way or expect to buy prepared a certain way based on region or other variables.
My point is that I don't care what other people do with their food.
I think ketchup on a hotdog is gross, and it is something I think is basically for kids, but if someone says I like ketchup on my hotdog I don't give a shit. I think pineapple on pizza is also an abomination but if someone orders it I don't get crazy about it, I don't care.
Some people really seem offended by how other people enjoy their food.
