1985 Giants-49ers - One of loudest Giants crowds

Eric from BBI : Admin : 7/5/2020 7:26 pm
The stadium went nuts in this game...

BigBlueVCR @BigBlueVCR
A few weeks ago I showed Jerry Rice's fumble in the 1986 Divisional playoff round. But he suffered the same fate in the 1985 Wild Card game @Giants Stadium when he was stripped from behind by Andy Headen and Byron Hunt recovered in #NYGiants 17-3 win. #GiantsPride

I was at the game with my dad.

Only thing truly profound is the passing of time.

Don't you think that was one of the most fired up Giants crowds?
That had to be the Giants playoff home game since the '60s

Hunt and Headen were

so damn fast. Even today are there 250 lbs LBs that were that fast?

I almost posted something about this some time ago. In my first post back in November I stated that I was at the 1962 Championship game with my dad. Did not miss many Giant home games until I gave up my seats when Met Life was built. Have always thought this was the loudest Giant crowd of any game I ever attended by far. I believe you hit the nail on the head Eric. This was the first Giant home playoff game since that 62 game against the Packers. The crowd was raucous and ready for blood, Giant fans were simply starved for a home playoff game. I remember being stunned during the team introductions. It was so loud you could not hear the players names being called out by the announcer. It was like that for the entire game.

I remember being somewhat disappointed the following year during the Championship game against the Redskins. I expected the crowd to be louder and crazier but nothing ever matched that game again in my opinion.
Looks like Hunt pinned the ball against his helmet

It just seemed from the opening kickoff, all the way through to the end, we just wanted this game so much because of the playoff losses in 81 and 84. The 49ers were THE roadblock.
I was there that day, I had bought an air horn the day before

just for the occasion. My friends and I went in early for warmups and there was already a large number of fans inside waiting and we gave them a roar as they came out of the tunnel and jogged down to the far end for stretching and calisthenics. In the parlance of our times, that place "was juiced!"

It's still one of my top memories for games I've seen in person. The defense was awesome. That was one of the very few times the Walsh-Montana 49ers were held without a touchdown.
The loudest I have ever heard Giants stadium was

the Ron Dixon touchdown return on opening kickoff vs Eagles in 2000 playoffs.
It would have been the first playoff game at the Meadowlands

except for the damn Jets playing the Patriots the day before.

but there was a time from 1985-1990 when the Giants had a great home field advantage. Every big game was this loud if not louder from before the kickoff until the game ended if they won, which they did most of the time. It lasted until the 1991 season started. It's never been the same since and completely ceased to exist when the new PSL palace was shoved up the fan bases collective asses. As painful as watching the Giants has become since 2011 it's the Karma the Mara's deserve. They killed the golden goose.

It was the first NFL postseason game there. And a typical Jets shoot themselves in the foot disaster. Believe me I was there
improvements

One thing they need to do is eliminate some of those ultra nosebleed seats way up top. Knock the capacity down from 82,500 to 77k or so and build overhangs as they have in Seattle. Cover the fans but keep the field in the elements. That will help the noise level and atmosphere. As it is the stadium is a drab gray air conditioner. I don't like it as a venue for anything. Football, concerts...very subdued and boring.

This is very true. Giants Stadium was a place most teams didn't want to play. I remember good home crowds up through the mid 1990s, but it definitely began to change before PSLs hit.
