The twin bill was ZZ Top and Gregg Allman. I took my mid-twenties kids to the show. There was a last second cancellation by Gregg Allman. The replacement band was Charlie Daniels. My kids were disappointed in the change and comments were made about seeing some old guy play the fiddle. I had this feeling and told them all that my guess was that with opening for ZZ Top, old Charlie wasn't going to play much fiddle. He put on one HELL of a show, totally electric guitar, doing most of the Saddle Tramp album. My kids were speechless. 3 new fans were born that night. RIP Charlie.
I just heard "In America" a couple days ago on Sirius XM
...I remember when it came out in 1980 and again after 9/11, and I remember thinking how right those lyrics were for both times.. I wish our country could come together like that again. Maybe? We'll see. Rest easy, Charlie...
"Well, the eagle's been flyin' slow and the flag's been flyin' low
And a lotta people sayin' that America's fixin' to fall
Well, speakin' just for me and some people from Tennessee
We've got a thing or two to tell you all
This lady may have stumbled but she ain't never failed
And if the Russians don't believe that, they can all go straight to hell
We're gonna put her feet back on the path of righteousness
And then God bless America again
And you never did think that it ever would happen again
In America, did you?
You never did think that we'd ever get together again
We damn sure could
Yeah, we're walking real proud and we're talkin' real loud again
In America, you never did think that it ever would happen again
From the Sound up in Long Island out to San Francisco Bay
And everything that's in between them is our own
And we may have done a little bit of fightin' amongst ourselves
But you outside people best leave us alone
'Cause we'll all stick together and you can take that to the bank
That's the cowboys and the hippies and the Rebels and and the Yanks
You just go and lay your hand on a Pittsburgh Steelers fan
And I think you're gonna finally understand
And you never did think that it ever would happen again
In America, did you?
You never did think that we'd ever get together again
We damn sure could
Yeah, we're walking real proud and we're talkin' real loud again
In America, you never did think that it ever would happen again

RE: One of my best memories, CD chugging Schaefer between songs at a
Central Park concert circa 1974 (?) ... A true, patriotic American, he probably died of a broken heart of the division we have today.
Since you've made this political without the actual courage to make direct statements, let's check up on the country's division that broken his heart.

If you ever saw Charlie Daniels in concert, you know how much he loved America, and he wasn’t afraid to voice his views on the greatness this country holds ... His talent was great, his music was great and he will be missed by many. Nothing else intended or implied.

also one hellaaciously great guitarist. Because of their tour's and the Basement Tapes, folks have repsprted or believed that The Band backed Boby Dylan up on Blonde on Blonde. But really on Robbie Robertson and, possibly Rick Danko, played on it at all. Instead, Dylan had gone to Nashville, because they had the best ploayers and the guitars on Blonde on Blonde belong to Charlie Daneils and Joe "Games People Play" South.
Rock historians (better writers than rock critics) have said the Led Zeppelin filled a space that no American band was occupying, but that's because the big American rock bands were either breaking up, like Creedence, or haviing members die like the Allman Brothers and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Led Zep was more or less done what Bonham died. The Allman's and Skynyrd kept coming back.

Joe South...now there's a name I haven't heard in a while. Going to have to dig up and listen to Games People Play. Man that guy made hits for a long list of people.
country music icon. A great violinist, and an even better guitarist. RIP. God bless. Prayers to his family and friends.
Wait.. WHAT? Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Charlies silly brand of country rock, but that fiddle was like a practical joke.
Devil went down to Georgia features just about the most God awful fiddle playing I've ever heard - I always presumed intentionally. Like southern rock 'Spinal Tap'. The song is pure comedy.
He was one of those acts I wanted to hate, but just couldn't. The songs were rollicking fun, the hooks addictive. Wooley Swamp is juvenile, insulting... but damn - that is one fantastic chorus. Love it.
Rest in Peace to a one-of-a-kind rocker, politics be damned, Charlie was entertaining as hell.
Legend of Wooley Swamp is maybe the best story ever told in song, as a little boy I'd sometimes get a little scared when I heard it. LOL.
RIP.
He wasn’t that old, was he sick?
That's what I was thinking too. RIP.

LOL what a fucking moron

What was so political about it that bothered you?

the whole Southern Rock movement ... but they had their day ('76, '77 ..? ). I remember playing the crap out of the "Fire on the Mountain" Album.

I think he was one of the earliest bands in the Southern Rock Movment. Definitely not the tail end.
