Chiefs and QB Patrick Mahomes have reached agreement on a 10-year -- 10-year! -- contract extension that ties him to Kansas City through the 2031 season, league sources tell ESPN.
but he couldn’t have asked for a better landing spot. Stable historic franchise, HOF coach, great talent around him, great homefield advantage, weak division. As bright a future as maybe anyone’s ever had.

His future is bright. But let's learn from Andrew Luck and know that nothing is certain.
Damn, a $300M+ Contract. Never thought I would see the day where a football contract could rival some of these baseball deals.
I was thinking closer to $400MM
Could very well be, a 10 year extension for him now means he will only be 35 when the contract is up. Seeing how the league is protecting QB's these days, you can very well see him still playing at a very high level well into his 30's.
Who knows what the numbers will be, but at the same time, you have to think Mahomes is OK with the security of a long term deal. He wants to win Super Bowls, so unsure he would want to put the Chiefs into a cap crippling type deal.
He had two years left on his current deal, so the 10 is added to the existing deal, meaning 12 years total. He will be 37 in the final season of the contract.
I bet it beats what the NYY just gave Gerritt Cole
the top QBs get 75/80% of the total value guaranteed but I can’t see it being that high on a 10 year deal, there has to be a discount somewhere for the Chiefs.
you can sign a 30 year deal in the NFL guaranteed money is what counts

Exactly.
RE: you can sign a 30 year deal in the NFL guaranteed money is what counts
interested to see sign bonus and guaranteed money.
Of course but for the top QBs it’s a given the guarantees are high. That disclaimer is for the JAGs. But the 10 year deal is pretty unprecedented and he’s giving up his right to get another contract so he’s still going to be paid handsomely.
and I’ll say it again ... but Patrick and Russell are the 2 best QBs in the business and deserve the most money ... 2 young, classy guys that are easy to root for. Maybe DJ gets there 1 day too.
My bad! Apologies. Yeah with inflation should be closer to $40M a year. But as always it’s the structure and guarantees that matter more than the annual value.
If you are allocating 1/5 of that to one player, you will start to lose the talent around him and your team won't be as successful. They probably have a 2-3 year window
with incentives could be close to 500 mil. The guaranteed money might be the better question.150 guaranteed who knows. Something this large can be structured many ways. The language will be the key
I am just running through shit in my head but on the surface this doesn't make much sense for either side. I'm sure there will come a point in time when Mahomes will not be happy with this contract. It seems to happen often and over 10 years it seems like a guarantee. On the flip side if he suffers a career ending injury the KC is FUCKED.
So, what makes sense for both? Has a player option ever been done in the NFL? Maybe this is a 5 year deal with a 5 year player option on top of it? It would have to protect KC against injury somehow if it were a player option. Does KC have room to front load the contract with roster bonuses as guaranteed money? Base salary guarantees make sense too. Signing bonus? It can't be crazy because that'll handcuff KC with that contract. It'll be interesting to see how it is structured.
Actually may be the only contract on an Elite player

Patrick Mahones 10 year extension, first reported by ESPN, will be guided by a mechanism that ensures the QBs annual salary never drops below certain cap thresholds, I'm told. Will always be above a certain % of the cap

There are no official numbers on Patrick Mahomes' 10-year extension just yet, but multiple sources believe it ultimately will be tied to a percentage of the salary cap for each season. The higher the cap goes, the more Mahomes will make.

The interesting part is, the Chiefs have been adamant that they would not tie a new Patrick Mahomes' deal to percentage of the cap. So this is going to be interesting to see the deal's final structure.
With the future uncertain, AND with Mahomes still having two remaining years on his current deal... Why now?
Because he earned it, and he’s the best at the position. I think a lot of fans get hung up on team makeup and don’t put enough stock in off the field value of which Mahomes value is also apparent but harder to quantify.
If we are just talking football it’s probably a deal that bites them eventually but they are going to get a ton of value out of it on and off the field.

It's not the parameters of the deal that I'm taking the issue with, it's the timing of it. I mean, there's a good chance there isn't an NFL season this year.
Why not shelve this deal, since Mahomes isn't a Free Agent or anything after this season (whether there is one or not) until next offseason when you know if there will be a consistent season or not?
Yep I can’t wait to see this...
I don't have an opinion one way or the other, would like to see these numbers.
Probably. I wonder how many MVPs and championships he wins?

You mean, wait out his Rookie deal, trade him for a couple of firsts and reload?

Would be highly entertaining.

If I recall correctly, it was just let him walk into Free Agency, but yeah, trading him for assets might have been an option too.
Damn

Yeah. 30 per year for Mahomes? No effin way.
Exactly.

He's a Safety. Jobber position compared to a QB.

You’re insane. There are multiples QBs worse than him making over $30M a year

Looking at the top 10 that year multiple teams are kicking themselves.

Much rather watch a fun team like them be a dynasty than the Pats who are like the Spurs of the NFL.

Patrick Mahomes' 10-year extension is worth $400M+, per

Four Hundred Million Exploding head

As others said he is in a great place. Andy will protect him and give him weapons. The defense......we'll see.

Great player, but I'll bet the under on this. We won't see a "next Patriots" again in our lifetimes.
