Chiefs and QB Patrick Mahomes have reached agreement on a 10-year -- 10-year! -- contract extension that ties him to Kansas City through the 2031 season, league sources tell ESPN.
if the APY and guaranteed money is greater than or equal to what you'd expect from two 5 year contracts.
Details should be very interesting.
Not sure any QB in the NFL could be worth a ten year extension.
Why? He's only 24 and the best QB in football. The 49ers gave Jimmy Garoppolo a 5 year 137.5 million dollar contract after just 7 career starts. I don't recall you criticizing that deal.
& Super Bowls. They're the next Patriots. People will hate them in a year or two.
Much rather watch a fun team like them be a dynasty than the Pats who are like the Spurs of the NFL.
KC is a very good team because of how they're constructed, more so than Mahomes is the greatest QB to ever play the game.
They've done a good job building a roster to have as many fast guys as possible to challenge defenses with a very unique talent in Tyreek Hill to boot.
Now with the cap space getting eaten up it will be interesting to see how the Chiefs adapt.
They trailed significantly in 3 postseason games, all wins perhaps, but still.
& Super Bowls. They're the next Patriots. People will hate them in a year or two.
He’ll be lucky to get back to another SB. I like Reid, but he’s no Belichick. Everyone thought Marino would get back to several SBs. Never did. You need MORE than talent to get back there

Well look at what he did with a 1-10 football team on top of a good resume in limited action with KC.
You either bet on him being a franchise guy or not, and with the cap space the team had it was easy to front load the squad.
The contract was up, so either a big extension had to be made or you go franchise tag. There wasn't luxury of another season, and I'm 99.99% sure they wouldn't have extended him any earlier than they had to if they had an extra season.
As far as what he's done so far, I think it speaks for itself. Winning percentage best of all starters since 2017. He's won with scrubs and won with elite players, with no knowledge of playbook, with very good knowledge.
Now his APY is barely top 10 going forward and the cap will increase in coming years. His next contract will correlate to how good he is at that point.
So yeah, tons to criticize. Far far riskier than paying Kirk Cousins, Dak Prescott, or a bunch of other guys who will be lucky to play in a SB.

Weird, I made no mention of either Cousins or Prescott I was talking about Mahomes. I laughed at the contract the Vikings gave Cousins and I hope the Cowboys give Prescott 35+ million per season.
You’ve proven your bias by applauding Garoppolo’s contract while laughing at Mahomes who is only 24 and has just won his first Super Bowl. He has been the best QB in the NFL over the past two years.
not really sure I follow, why not get a deal done now? If they don’t play they don’t play, and if anything the Chiefs would pay more if they wait. For Mahomes he gets his security locked in and if he gets a huge signing bonus he can roll that all into investments and make a fortune off interest instead of waiting.
I need to see the parameters but this is probably a good deal for both sides.
$450 million, $470 million including the last 2 years of his current deal. Dude got paid and once the cap starts rising this will end up being ok for KC

Fortunate, if not lucky. There are many teams through the years that were thisclose to getting back to a SB. Brees never got back. Rodgers never got back. Bad calls, miscues are part of the game, that’s why it’s so difficult to return..No guarantee great QBs ever return.
He might get back. He certainly has the talent to do a lot of carrying on his back. STILL, so much can go wrong, even if he’s not at fault.
The Statement was made that he’ll have several SBs and MVPs in the coming years. I simply opined that there’s no certainty of that. Lots can happen to derail.

The #Chiefs and QB Patrick Mahomes have agreed to terms on a 10-year extension worth $503 million, sources tell me and
@TomPelissero
. He gets $477M in guarantee mechanisms and gives the ability for Mahomes to have outs if the guarantee mechanisms aren’t exercised. No trade clause
only if you want to cut the player. Who thinks Mahones gets cut> STFU about guaranteed money. Can anyone tell me how much guaranteed money Eli got under his deals with the Giants? No one because it never mattered. Nahomes is on an entirely different level, absent injury (which if I understand the articles gets him $140 Million) he's going to get every penny of that money. More likely he renegotiates a better contract after 5 years, than he gets cut.

Is there a difference between injury guar and just plain guar?
But for a QB who is only 23 or 24 has won a SB and an MVP award this early in their career and is healthy; it's well deserved. As long as this deal isn't tied to the cap, which it isn't, it's fine. And as someone above said, the next time a franchise QB's contract comes up, Mahomes will no longer be the highest paid QB, which is crazy to think considering the money in this deal, but this is where it's headed.

No. It's relevant to the risk the team is taking on a ten year contract/bet. If he blows out both his knees 140 guarantee is a lot better than 275. Most teams don't like to lose 100 mill on a losing bet.
So how does Mahomes contract effect Dak’s negotiations
Only 9 days to go before he plays on the tag. It has been really quiet down here in Dallas with regards to his contract negotiations. Does he get his 4 year deal at $34M annually.
Good for Mahomes who if he stays healthy will probably win multiple MVP’s and SB’s
it has never happened where a player taking up more than like 12% of the cap ever won a super bowl. I'm sure it'll happen at some point but look at Aaron Rodgers. He should have more than 1 SB. The odds are just stacked against them in general without the salary cap. But when you add that in it is near impossible.
I had that convo with my cousin a few months back: between Favre & Rodgers, doesn't it feel like the Packers should have more than 2 titles since '91? I get winning titles is obviously hard & it's a team sport, but those guys are all time great QBs.
& Super Bowls. They're the next Patriots. People will hate them in a year or two.

Maybe he wont get back to another, but it's certainly not going to take luck for him to get to another one.
He was also a missed defensive hold from being in an unlikely position to mount a comeback.
And with this humongous contract? My god, nobody could have predicted $500MM with a serious face.
But I'd put $ on Mahomes getting back to another Super Bowl before it's all said & done. Maybe my 'They're the next Pats' comment was a little hyperbole because NE's run of excellence will be nearly impossible to repeat, but KC isn't going anywhere anytime soon. If there's a season, they're the clear favorites in the AFC, with Baltimore being a notch below.

It's a great system with great talent, fast receivers who can get open.
Just like Seattle, it's a team built on the continuous home run threat that will keep attacking until something cracks.
Both offenses are less effective as standard move the ball types. 2011 Saints type offense was ridiculous because every inch of the field was under constant duress.
But now you've seen the Seahawks without Lynch, and soon we'll see Mahomes without the best offensive supporting cast in the league.
Meanwhile we've seen Garoppolo in the Super Bowl making far more than either of them did in their respective Super Bowl appearances. Wilson since getting paid has been an exciting regular season QB, and a nail biter for the wildcard/divisional rounds since 2015. Hasn't even had a 13 win season either.
I guess Kyle Shanahan must be the GOAT for taking a 2-14 team to the Bowl in 3 years with a shit QB.

Compensation update: Patrick Mahomes’ 10-year extension is worth $450 million, sources tell ESPN.
The injury guarantee is $140 million, per source.
The contract does not contain language that ties its value to a percentage of the salary cap.

Probably. I wonder how many MVPs and championships he wins?
more than 1 more is a long shot.
However, when is the last time a team with the highest paid QB in the NFL won the the Super Bowl?
Brady was never that. A lot of QBs got paid after winning the SB and never got back.
I love Mahomes, so if anyone can get it done with limited team resources, he can. But, I wouldn't bet any money on it.
1. In 2020: $10.825 million.
2. In 2021: $22.8 million (base salary of $990,000, roster bonus of $21.7 million, and workout bonus of $100,000 in 2021).
3. In 2022: $29.45 million (base salary of $1.5 million, roster bonus of $27.4 million, and workout bonus of $550,000 in 2022).
4. In 2023: $40.45 million (base salary of $5.5 million, roster bonus of $34.4 million, and workout bonus of $550,000 in 2023).
5. In 2024: $37.95 million (base salary of $2.5 million, roster bonus of $34.9 million, and workout bonus of $550,000 in 2024).
