Browns Restructure Olivier Vernon's Contract

The Cleveland Browns and veteran EDGE Olivier Vernon have agreed to a restructured contract.

Per ESPN’s Field Yates, Vernon will receive $11 million in guaranteed compensation for 2020, including a $4 million signing bonus and a new salary of $6.75 million. Previously, Vernon was on the books for $15.2 million, but none of that figure was guaranteed.

The team also included a no-tag clause in the new deal that guarantees Vernon, 29, will become an unrestricted free agent following the season.

Vernon notched 29 tackles and 3.5 sacks in his first season with the Browns after being acquired in a trade from the New York Giants. He missed six games with injury, a recurring theme for Vernon over the last few seasons.

The move, coupled with the off-season addition of Adrian Clayborn, effectively closes the door on the Browns’ well-documented pursuit of free agent Jadeveon Clowney.

Not much of a surprise.

that's more of a paycut

basically gave him a gtd signing bonus in exchange for $4M paycut.
What if NFL only plays 8 games?

Does he keep all 4 million? If so, that's a good move by him.

If the browns cut him... a hunch says he would not have gotten 11 mil on the current market. Not a bad move for him or for Cleveland.

I have a feeling the NYG have one splash move in them before week 1.

God I wish we could trade/cut Solder and sign Clowney or dare I even say AB... highly doubt the latter but wow wouldn't that be something if he really got back on the field
doesn't seem like a paycut

sounds like he was a potential cut that wouldn't have made it back on the open market.

At this point...maybe you're right. I'm not sure how much teams have left in cap space, plus its unlikely we see a big jump in the 2021 cap due to Covid so some teams may want/need to carry extra cap space over (e.g. Eagles). But edge rusher's always get paid on the open market. Quinn has a long injury history and up-and-down production and still got a 5 yr/$70M deal. Ansah just signed for $9M despite only playing in 18 games the last 2 seasons (6.5 total sacks vs Vernon's 10.5 over that time). JPP got 2 yrs/$25M.

Definitely wouldn't have surprised me if Vernon received 2 yrs/$20-25M on the open market, even at this juncture of the offseason.

The rare times you see a straight paycut, that's usually the case. The team had leverage (outright cutting him) and used that to get him to agree to a reduced salary figure. The "carrot" was the signing bonus which CLE was amenable to since Vernon's still a very good player when healthy and they'd have a huge hole if they cut him.

Agreed 100%.
DG has some serious whiffs on his resume, but dumping OV was a GREAT move.

I just love these thoughts...cut solder for a 16 million dollar cap hit (that the giants can't afford) and oh yeah replace him with who?

And then the cherry on top is to sign an over priced DE in clownwy who has only played 1 full season in 6 seasons and has never reached double digit sacks.

Brilliant!!

The AB comment just leaves me totally speechless. He is more than likely going to be suspended for his off the field issues and he has shown to be a problem in the locker room. Yeah, let's sign that guy!

The Giants can't cut Solder now, his replacement would be worse and cost more than the cap savings of cutting him. I have seen 3-4 2019 Seahawk games on NFL network the last month and Clowney plays much better than his stats. He is very disruptive and works hard, even at the end of the year when he was hurt. I would much rather spend the $16 million plus on him rather than Leonard Williams. If the Giants wanted rid of OBJ, they do not want AB.

If the Giants cut Solder today, they save 10M against the 2020 cap, and incur dead money of 6.5M in each of 2020 and 2021.

When they inevitably cut him next year, they will incur that 6.5M in dead money regardless.

So the real question is do you think the Giants can find a better offensive tackle than Nate Solder for 10M in 2020? I do, because he’s a horrible left tackle. I’d sign Kelvin Beachum in a heart beat over Nate Solder.

The Browns aren’t any guiding light on how to run a circus, but this move is a good option when you have leverage, and something the Giants should do.
I'd be surprised
