NFT: Favorite Beer

DaddyM89 : 7/8/2020 12:49 am
I know this is a tough question. Just got back from a trip to Vermont last week and I think Focal Banger by the Alchemist might take the cake (Heady Topper the more popular beer by them is unreal as well.). Close second would be the Black Tie Porter from Lake Placid Pub which hasn't been around in a few years unfortunately (mix of vanilla and chocolate malts in a porter was delicious.) What say you BBI?

Favorite is very difficult to pick as it's one...

Anchor Steam's Christmas Ale, which changes every new iteration, is a perennial favorite and has been for decades.

Tonight I had a Long Trail Green Blaze IPA for the first time, with a fried flounder dinner, and found it excellent.

The original Schaefer beer. It was very mild and almost sweet tasting. Today it’s just one of many labels slapped on a bottle or can by some brewery.

Living in Wisconsin I favor Miller Genuine Draft. But even that label is suspect now. Just one of many brands made by Molson Coors. Molson Coors has already decided to give up the naming rights to Miller Park where the Milwaukee Brewers play. Can you imagine in a town that made Miller, Pabst, Schlitz, Blatz, Old Milwaukee, Gettleman, and other names can’t keep a name on a ballpark.

Too heavy though for summer drinking so I prefer an IPA. Citradelic by New Belgium is my go-to but Cape May Brewery makes a damn good IPA.

Just had Cape May the other day, perfect beach beers. Flying Fish also makes a good set of beers for the beach.

Overall it depends on the season, but I had Pliny the Elder on tap a few years ago, and it's tough to beat.
like montanagiant, I'm not a big beer drinker as a rule. too filling
Victor in CT : 7/8/2020 7:34 am : link
but on these dog days of summer, after doing some yard work an ice cold Pabst Blue Ribbon is very nice.

I also like Peroni, . And Sam Adams Lager. As a rule though, I cant enjoy my meals as much with beer.

Where do I begin?

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Sierra Nevada Torpedo. Sweetwater IPA. Elysian Space Dust IPA. Freak of Nature IPA. Citraquench'l (IPA). Blurred Up (IPA). Stone IPA. Sculpin IPA. Smuttynose Finest Kind (IPA). Harpoon IPA. Stoneface IPA. Lunch IPA. Pliny the Elder/Pliny the Younger. Yards IPA. Kane Head High/Kane Over Head. Wrench IPA.

One I've had once, but I need to have again, is Heady Topper from Alchemist in Vermont. That is a delicious beer. Also, Henry Hops at Citi Field. I forget the name of the brewery, but when I went to a Mets game last year we went to some brewery right by McFadden's that had Henry Hops on draft & it was damn good.

I'd agree with a lot on this list. I've been drinking Sweetwater 420 Strain lately and Bells Two-Hearted Ale. There's a brewery in the area called Green Man and I like their IPA's as well.
With all respect to Beerfest, my favorite overall is a Munich Helles,

from either Paulaner or Augustiner... After that it’s Kronenbourg 1664. If we’re talking domestic, then it’s Dortmunder Gold from Great Lakes. It must be the Cleveland area water. Prost !!!
Long Trail Green Blaze IPA is very good
JonC : 7/8/2020 8:33 am : link
I've mostly been drinking IPAs for a handful of years now, guess I'm addicted to potent hops. The Other Half Green City IPA is my recent favorite among others by this brewery. Wish they were easier to find. The Sam Adams New England IPA and the Rebel line got me started on this journey in the first place.
IPA nut...
PA Aggie : 7/8/2020 8:37 am : link
Sip O Sunshine from Lawson's. Two Juicy from Two Roads. Heady Topper. No Filter from Hooker. Alien Church from Tired Hands. Pretty much anything from Treehouse. And The Veil in Richmond turns out some excellent IPA's and DIPA's. Toppling Goliath in Iowa, and New Trail in Williamsport doing good stuff too.

Great, it's 8:30 in the morning and I'm thinking about beer...

Lawson's Sip of Sunshine is close, as well. I also get a bottle of Goose's Bourbon county stout every year.

For local beers Magnify Maine Event & anything from Czig Meister's Abyss series are phenomenal.

My girlfriend is from Milwaukee. It's such a bummer that the baseball stadium in "Brew City" won't be Miller Park anymore. You literally smell the wheat/hops/barley when you drive around town. Now the Brewers will be playing at American Family Insurance Park. It's was cringe-worthy just typing that.

Also, have you ever had Spotted Cow by New Glarus? It's like all they drink over there lol I like it a lot but to me it's just a Yuengling.
There is no favorite
Johnny5 : 7/8/2020 9:27 am : link
So many great brews out now, and really good ones listed already. I could maybe go favorite by style... but that wouldn't work either... lol.
My faves lately are ones you can't even get on tap anywhere, or even by canned/bottled EXCEPT from their own brewery (not distributed):
1) Other Half Brewery in Brooklyn - They have become famous for their "oat cream" brewed in their beers. Their Double and Imperial IPAs actually allowed me to drink IPAs again (after being completely played out). Absolutely fantastic.
2) The TreeHouse Brewery in Charlton MA - Especially a bunch of their Stouts... so good.

Other than those when I get something from a place that is not deep in craft brews generally anything from Dogfish head, also La Fin Du Monde seems to be everywhere now...

And I have to say, being a beer snob I never thought I could say this, but if I'm drinking more than a couple with friends and I HAVE to do something benign from one of the big guys? Miller High Life. No lie. LOL. That said I would rather drink Goat Urine than a Budweiser.

lots of good local beers exist in name only now. sad
I'm a home brewer
VTChuck : 7/8/2020 9:37 am : link
And I like my American Pale and ESB, on tap.

My son is a brewer for a craft brewery, so until I get my brewery set up in my new location, I've been drinking what he gives me (free). I have hop fatigue, so I stick to more balanced and lower alcohol ~ 5-6%

As a rule draft beer and freshness are the important factors. So much bottled beer on the shelves is not fresh.
Couple of faves in PA
LehighValleyFan : 7/8/2020 9:37 am : link
Local Weyerbacher brewery has many choices - warning they are quite potent. I'm good with New Belgium brews. All time fave is Maine's Atlantic Brewing blueberry ale. Unfortunately, don't think they ship it too far.
I’ll second Fat Tire
Mike from Ohio : 7/8/2020 9:40 am : link
It’s been my gold standard for years. New Belgium can’t seem to make a bad beer. Another local brewery that can do no wrong is NoDa. While the handle says Ohio, I live outside Charlotte and NoDa is one of the best local breweries I have found.

Really liking many of the hazy IPAs lately. Best one is Radio Haze by NoDa. New Belgium makes a Juicy Haze IPA which is also excellent. But while I love IPAs, it seems the market is becoming saturated with them.
Finback IPA
sshin05 : 7/8/2020 9:44 am : link
probably the best beer i've ever had. Local brewery from Queens, NY. I'm sick of pilsners but their's probably the best i ever tried.

Captain Lawrence Orbital Tilt IPA

Sierra Nevada Hazy Little Thing IPA

Newburgh Megaboss IPA, good easy beer for the non-IPA drinkers.

Not sure if I can quite pick a favorite
bigblue5611_2 : 7/8/2020 10:01 am : link
But I like almost anything from Southern Tier. A buddy of mine works for them and has gotten me a few things before they were officially released to the public. Their "Science is the Art" collection a year or two ago was very good.

One that has stuck with me since my bachelor party in MD was "Sweet Baby Jesus" by DuClaw. It's a chocolate peanut butter porter, declicious. I've found it a few times in a large beer mart in Rochester, but it's not carried in CNY from what I've seen unfortunately...
I love..
FatMan in Charlotte : 7/8/2020 10:04 am : link
Sweet Baby Jesus and have it everytime I'm in the Baltimore area.

Porters are tough though. I can have one as a "dessert" and that's it.

They can definitely be on the heavier side so I certainly can't fault you there though. I could easily have about 3-4 though lol
My top 5 right now
UConn4523 : 7/8/2020 10:17 am : link
Maine Beer Company - Lunch
Lawson's - Super Session
Alchemist - Focal Banger (agree here with the OP and its better than Heady Topper IMO)
Other Half - Broccoli
Cigar City - Jai Alai
I've down on Treehouse
UConn4523 : 7/8/2020 10:18 am : link
their beer just tastes like fruit juice now. I just sampled a bunch over the holiday weekend from a mixed case my brother-in-law brought back from them and I was very underwhelmed. 2 years ago they tasted different, not sure what it is.
Jai Alai is a good add.
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 7/8/2020 10:20 am : link
Had that down in Key West a ton back in February, which feels like 50 years ago.
UConn great list

love all of those beers on that list except for Broccoli which I have not had.
Kane Head High
10thAve : 7/8/2020 10:37 am : link
I love lots of others but Head High is always my go to.

Carton 077XX would be my second.
Lawsons Brewing
DaddyM89 : 7/8/2020 10:38 am : link
I know a few of you have mentioned them particularly Sunshine IPA which is a great beer. I went to their brewery last week as well which serves food also. It's huge and has a great outdoor area. Would really recommend it.
For easy drinking in the summer...
PSIMMS 22-25-268 : 7/8/2020 10:39 am : link
I tend to go real light, especially when it's hot and humid. Land Shark and Rolling Rock.

My go-to's are Fat Tire and Blue Point Toasted Lager. BP Mosaic is also real tasty.

I typically do not care for fruity or wheat beers, but one notable exception is Lost Cause Tangerine Wheat. Just a fantastic beer (tough to find).

I also like Lunch (Maine Beer Co.) and Jai Alai (Cigar City) as others have posted. Another I am partial to is Sweetwater 420 Extra Pale Ale.

Damn, now I'm thirsty at it's not even 11 AM.

The Southern Tier Overpack'd is the mixed pack I buy the most. Their stuff is solid across the board, including 2XMAS.

The Maine bottles are always well done, Lunch, Dinner, Peeper, etc.

Other Half is fantastic, wish it was a bit easier to get since there's no shot i'm going to NY right now, haha.

So Sip of Sunshine is one of my all time favorites but I'm getting tired of the DIPA's (although Sip is super light compared to most) and i'm getting into Sessions big time. Super Session is a stellar beer. Packs the taste of a great IPA into a 4.8% light beer - perfect for summer (or anytime, haha).

I just tried their new beer "The Space In Between" and didn't care for it. Almost tasted like a Sour which isn't for me. Next up is trying their Little Sip.
Sip of Sunshine is a good IPA.

Just for Jersey usually try to drink anything by Kane, Icarus, Conclave, Magnify, Carton, Cape May, Tonewood, and Troon which is probably the best right now.
If I had to name but one
Gene : 7/8/2020 11:54 am : link
I'd go with Sam Adams Boston lager. However, this summer the wifey and I have been on a Sierra Nevada binge.

I highly recommend the sampler case with the Pale Ale, Hoppy Anniversary, Torpedo Extra and the Hop Bullet DIPA.
Top 3 ... in no particular order.
