NYC objected to the Giants leaving the five boroughs for New Jersey and still calling themselves the "New York" Giants. That was still a sore point when the Giants won their first Super Bowl; there was no ticker-tape parade down the Canyon of Heroes. They later went back to the NY logo and by then nobody seemed to mind. By the time 2007 came around, everybody had made peace with the whole thing and they got their parade.
It was a very "70s" spat.
There was a lot of outcry and a lot of people cared.
The whole NY-to-NJ thing was pretty big and it still carried over to Mayor Kotch not allowing the Giants to have a ticker tape parade after winning SB XXI in 1986. The logo change was part of that, as if the Giants were turning their backs on NY.
Personally, I think the GIANTS logo was an improvement over the version of the NY that they wore in 1975. The classic logo that they wore from 1961-1974 was their best (the current one they wear is very close to that but not exactly the same).

Exactly. I was a kid, but hated that jazzed up "NY" and hated the "GIANTS" logo even more. Happy they went back to what was their more traditional logo, though as mentioned it's not exact.
My feelings are the same as rnargi's. Didn't like the 1975 NY logo, disliked the GIANTS logo even more. At the time, I thought it was the blandest and most unimaginative logo in sports - a big disappointment. And while many associate it with the glory days of the '80s, it still makes me think of the awful years of the late '70s. Hope they never change back to it, beyond the occasional throwback.
The earlier thread on the Giants of the 70s got me thinking about the season plus at the Yale Bowl ... the team was terrible and we suffered the indignity of a gimpy Joe Namath bootlegging a TD on 1 leg to beat us in OT. I was 17 and our seats went from the behind a pole in the lower deck at old Yankee Stadium to dead nuts on the 50, mid way up in the bowl. But the best memories were from the drunken rides to and from New Haven on the railroad, and watching the fools that would fall into the wall urinals at halftime. Ah, the good old days. And I never understood the NY/NJ argument because then NFL teams were largely named for the city not the state. The Giants were the NY Giants because they represented NYC and just like the Detroit Lions used to play in Pontiac and the DallyCowboys played in Irving TX, the Giants played in a suburbs of the city they represented. The Bills aren’t the NY Bills because they represent the city of Buffalo.
Being a Giants fan in the late 60's and early 70's meant only watching road games on TV and listening to home games on the radio because of blackout rules.
The Giants were so bad during this period that it was often painful listening on my little transistor radio....but being an eternal optimist, I held out hope that things would get better.
I loved Tarkenton, Tucker, and Ron Johnson, but Pete Athas was my favorite! SS out of Tennessee.
There were some highs...like the 62-10 victory over the Eagles or the first playoff win vs. Philly!
But there were some lows too like the fumble.
But I stayed loyal and treated every new day like it was the day we were going to turn it all around.
as figured some teams just change it from time to time. And they do.
The NY vs NJ thing was just kind of silly as the team clearly is identified across a wide metro region. I was more interested in what happened on field versus the political bickering.
Thought it was blah. They couldn't come up with any better logo than that? Was part of the price of getting Jersey politicos on board with the Meadowlands I guess.

the posts were considered "political" and banned ;)
I can imagine other helmet designs but the "Giants" on the side was unimaginative, to say the least.

The best thing you can say about that 1975 logo is that it was one-and-done!

The reward was 1986!
It will happen again!!!!

Was very happy to see the NY come back. Classic.
I was calling for a return to the traditional 'ny' right away. Never a fan of the GIANTS logo.
Should've kept the 80's uni's, current helmets.
