Knicks have a surplus of draft picks to move up, most teams ahead of them are set at point guard, the Ball family wants to make this happen, and he's not a Zion-level prospect who teams covet. Hope it happens.

I think you are way underestimating the circus around the Ball family. I think the talent gap is going to be close enough that teams absolutely would not want to risk drafting him if the Knicks would be his preference.

Having a Ball on your team is an enormous distraction if they land where they want. I would say generally that a player wanting to be somewhere is a fairly worthless sentiment. With the exception being what looks like the biggest familial distraction I've witnessed in sports.

and seems like a mature young man. I suspect LaMelo will do the same. To my knowledge, neither has a rep of being a jerk. If you don't want to draft LaMelo because of his warts, I get it - but I think LaVar's 15 minutes of fame are up.

I'm more concerned about the shooting issues, with RJ and Mitch already poor in that area, but no one on the roster has established himself as a certain part of the foundation. I suspect there are a lot of trades in our future.

FatMan in Charlotte : 7/10/2020 4:15 pm : link
way overhyped and comes with the significant baggage of his Dad.

The people who are calling him the best PG in the draft really should look at the competition he's been playing against and his shooting has been abysmal. He shot 28% in the Lithuanian League!!
Everyone thinks this draft is terrible
bceagle05 : 7/10/2020 5:07 pm : link
so I’m not sure anyone is overhyped. Like a lot of other prospects in this year’s class, LaMelo only played a few games (12), so it’s hard to go crazy over the stats, though his shooting needs to improve. Lonzo didn’t shoot or defend coming into the NBA, but has improved in both areas. You’d be banking on the same thing with Melo.

I may be in the minority here, but I couldn’t care less about LaVar. No one takes him seriously anymore. Let him yap.

17.2 - 4.5 - 3.1 - 1 45%, 33%, 62%

Feel like this isn't being talked about enough

Shooting percentages still need work, but as a 20 year old there's so much there to work with.
Also of note
bceagle05 : 7/11/2020 6:37 pm : link
is RJ’s two best stretches came in the first half when Marcus Morris missed a few games due to injury, and post-All Star Break after Morris had been traded. Knicks didn’t do RJ any favors by making him stand and watch Morris and Randle and deal with garbage point guards.
I'm hopeful about Barrett.
Strahan91 : 7/11/2020 7:38 pm : link
He has his warts but flashed plenty even as a rookie. His game is also particularly harmed by the lack of floor spacing and a viable PG. He seems like a kid with a good head on his shoulders and given how competitive he is and his reputation as a hard worker, I think he'll be a really good pro in due time. How good will depend on his outside shooting.

All the top prospects in this draft have warts or question marks but Ball does some things at an elite level already. It's personal preference but I would rather that than someone who doesn't but might be more well-rounded right now especially given his age. He's by no means a good shooter but he had a knack for taking longggg 3's (why I have no idea) which obviously harmed his shooting %'s.
This is obviously pending randle being traded
nygiants16 : 7/11/2020 7:48 pm : link

RJ needs to improve his FTs first and foremost.

Strahan91 : 7/11/2020 8:38 pm : link

He desperately needs to improve his shooting, period, from everywhere. He has the potential to be a Melo-type scorer but only if he can develop a shot like Melo. It's possible, but I can't say I'm certain that he will be able to. He simply isn't a good enough athlete to be a true top player without being at least a pretty good shooter.

I think Mitch is a better defender than KP but he has a long way to go on the other end of the floor.

It's not a coincidence that a guy as good as him played for nine different teams, never staying in one place longer than five years. They wanted guys who could ease the scoring burden which was all Ewing at the time and thought Smith and Blackman would provide that and push them over the top. Knicks had also drafted Greg Anthony or year or two first in the first round and felt like he could fill Jackson’s shoes.

I guess the positive spin is it adds another good player to next year's stacked draft class. We have two firsts and potentially two high seconds, IF we don't make a significant trade before then.

Riley wanted more of a defender at PG. And the front office became enamored with Charles Smith who was a good stats on a bad team kinda guy. So they ended up with great defenses year after year but below average offenses. They botched quite a few moves after they drafted Ewing. Contrast that with the Bulls who immediately surrounded MJ with Grant and Pippen.

Cheeks trade was more about Bianchi trying to save his job with a win-now move. Mark Jackson barely played in the playoffs that year after they got Cheeks. As for Strickland, you're overstating his travels around the league. He spent his prime with basically two team, and the Blazers only moved on him because they were committing highway robbery by getting Sheed for him.

I agree overall but had Smith been able to put the ball in the hoop in '93 the Knicks very possibly (if not likely) win it all and we might be talking about that trade very differently today.

even if he had made that shot, he was still a bad fit on a team that was already loaded with bigs.

Yeah, I agree. I'm just saying a Knicks championship would've made people forget that and the value they got in return for Jackson. IE, a lesser version of the Cubs trading Gleyber Torres for a half season of Chapman but a WS win.

then not as well with the Knicks. Wonder if it was Ewing.

he was fed the ball a lot on a bad team and put up some numbers. Happens all the time.

shouldn't have played a 6'10" power forward at small forward so much if they wanted him to reach his Clippers scoring figures especially since they were using anti-fastbreak offense as well. Anyway, his four year per 36 average as a Knick was 15.5. So he was a good player on a good team for his first three years as a Knick at least

Seemed like a good pair with Ewing and seemed like they were building something

Riley wanted more of a defender at PG. And the front office became enamored with Charles Smith who was a good stats on a bad team kinda guy. So they ended up with great defenses year after year but below average offenses. They botched quite a few moves after they drafted Ewing. Contrast that with the Bulls who immediately surrounded MJ with Grant and Pippen.

Yup. In my view The GM that really shit the bed was bianchi. He inherited ewing and bad team with numerous draft and FA and trade chances to truly stock the shelves around Ewing. He blew it. When checketts and Riley came along the damage or lack of roster progress, other than ewing and Oakley was too much to overcome, in the end. Checketts and the front office had really one big chAnce to make the right move when the dealt Jackson and more away for smith. Most of the other moves, even the Xman signing one year prior were sort of lower cost under the radar types. Mason and starks were found off the scrap heap. Traded late first rounders for guys like Blackmon. But the big trade, the one where they traded legit deep assets and money, was the one for Smith. It shouldn’t have been THAT difficult to give ewing a great supporting cast. Very little margin for error. Bianchi did nothing.
