NFT: new siding on a house

BillKo : 7/9/2020 4:42 pm
We have decided to get new vinyl siding on our house. Currently we have asbestos shingles - built with the house which is about 60 years old.

Does anyone have experience with removing asbestos or simply going over it (which builder says he can do)?

Also - I've heard it's best to do a house in the spring or fall to reduce expansion/shrinking of the siding.

Any other tidbits of experience you might have on siding a house would be greatly appreciated!!!

removal charge

What is he charging if you decide to remove the shingles? Check with your town if there is a specific procedure. They might have to be sent somewhere that disposes of asbestos, if so, you are better off doing the vinyl on top
My house is a two story colonial with a brick front....

....they charge an extra $4K to remove the asbestos. And yes you simply can't throw it in the garbage...needs to be disposed of properly.
Some contractors won’t touch asbestos siding.

My guess, a cost issue. Many municipalities may present much higher hurdles, likely in the form of specific permits. Asbestos removal has become a nightmare, generally. I’d guess you’re in a much better place to have your guy just wrap the house over the top of the asbestos.
time of year for install shouldn't matter

a good installer will make sure there's enough room for expansion and contraction and if there isn't, you'll know it and should be covered.
i've done siding over asbestos shingle...

it is the much more expedient way to go... otherwise the asbestos removal is a nightmare, assuming you can get someone to do it.
Standard practice throw some 1/2

Foam board over it both to insulate and to cover up the couple of shingles that will break off and drop when nailing in the siding. No reason to remove them except near roof lines where you'll want to update the flashing.
As others have said

look into siding over it. We did with consent of town. As long as it is sealed over properly should not be a problem. Can save you thousands.
