How will this Marlins outbreak impact NFL plans

GGGGmen : 7/27/2020 9:59 am
Is it too late for the NFL to consider a bubble of their own? NFL Island?

After 1 weekend the MLB is in crisis mode. You have to believe this same exact thing can and will happen in NFL locker rooms. As we know all it takes is 1 guy to infect the larger group.

With locker rooms of 100+ people including players, staff and coaches. How does the NFL realistically plan and execute a season without a bubble or island/isolate concept?

Status quo seems unrealistic at this point.
wayyy too late to consider...
Italianju : 7/27/2020 10:02 am : link
a bubble. The logistics on that would be insane. Plus i dont think there was ever a chance that the players association in the NFL or MLB would ever have accepted a 4-5 month bubble.
Due to the sheer size of each NFL team and staff

I'm not sure a bubble is financially plausible at this point.

for teams to contract this virus. That has to be looked into.

Eric on Li : 7/27/2020 10:15 am : link
they should have done that. Probably could have even found a way to make it a fan event with big $ trips each week for people who pass tests.

Put each conference on their own island bubbles, adjust the regular season schedule or just run charters back and forth each week, best team on each island plays in the super bowl. Probably only need 2 decent venues per island so you can run 4 total games concurrently if nec at 1p or 4p and holding games for SNF/MNF.

They may even be able to take the NBA's bubble when they are done and use Disney for one of the venues (albeit not an island).
Of course it’s going to happen.

Use all the protocols you want, sports seasons are not happening and if they do, shutdowns are inevitable, imo. This is not rocket science and never has been.

Football Mars!! From NASA's Space and Football Facts

Quote:

---It would take just over 195 billion footballs, end-to-end, to reach from Earth to Mars at their closest distances. When Mars is farther away from Earth it would take 1.4 trillion footballs.

---On Mars, a football would weigh less than half a pound (only .38 pounds) while a 200-pound football player would weigh just about 75 pounds.

---The longest field goal kick in NFL history is 64 yards. On Mars, at ⅓ the gravity of Earth, that same field goal, ignoring air resistance, could have been made from almost two football fields away (192 yards).

---Aerodynamic drag doesn’t happen on Mars. With a very thin atmosphere and low gravity to drag the ball down, a quarterback could throw the football three times as far as he could on Earth. A receiver would have to be much further down the field to catch the quarterback’s throw.

We just need to get Space X's Starship's Service to Earth Orbit, Moon Mars and Beyond going. You can do this, Elton!!!

NFL has unique challenges
giants#1 : 7/27/2020 10:48 am : link
NBA/NHL can spread games out over several days. NFL has 30 of the 32 teams play every Sunday (28/32 once TNF picks up). Take out SNF and you still have 26 teams (13 games) occurring in two time slots so you would either need to drastically change the scheduling or have a place capable of holding 7 games simultaneously (while still providing enough distance between the fields for some distancing).

I guess they could try and take over Saturday's too (doubt CFB will happen) and have back-to-back MNF games, but even doing that you essentially only have 9 time slots (TNF, 3 Sat, 3 Sun, 2 MNF) so 7 of them would require at least 2 simultaneous games.
NFL will give it a shot
Oscar : 7/27/2020 10:58 am : link
I think it’s always been the least likely to work out because of the sheer number of players, it’s a contact sport and it’s played in the fall when (I assume) COVID is going to really spread again.

I hope it works because I love football. But if you’re not mentally preparing for no season I think you’re setting up for disappointment.
no shot of "bubbling" 3,000-5,000 people
UConn4523 : 7/27/2020 11:06 am : link
for upwards of 5 months. It isn't even realistic to try and plan, IMO. Players, coaches and staff just vanish from their at home lives for half the year?

Riiiight.
Here’s a perfect example of what to expect, imo:
Big Blue '56 : 7/27/2020 11:11 am : link
Yanks/Phils now cancelled. Marlins are still in isolation in Phil, so now Baltimore's schedule is screwed (they were supposed to play Marlins). Therefore 1 team's covid issue has now affected 4. Pull the plug, b/c it's going to happen to more than 1 team.

If the Phils are cleared this doesn't affect the schedule too bad for them and the Yanks aside from cancelling tonight's game.

They're scheduled to play in NYC on Wednesday and Thursday so these two games from Philly could be moved to Yankee Stadium and play a double header on one of the days.

I agree it's likely going to happen to more teams as the season goes on but I'm not going to jump to pulling the plug this quickly.
Does MLB have a suspension policy for breaking social distancing
BH28 : 7/27/2020 11:25 am : link
Like NFL? If not, there is no incentive for 'invincible' ball players to stay the hell out of non compliant situations.

If these guys want to get paid, maybe this will be a lesson learned to the NFL players. Break protocol, and you jeopardize the season and your pay check.

Its not up to the NFL - the NFLPA would have to agree to it. That NFLPA represents thousands of workers, many won't want to be isolated away from their families for half the year - I'd wager many of the coaches and staff wouldn't either.

This isn't simple, there's no easy fix for a league of this size.
A bubble just isn't practical for NFL or MLB.
Section331 : 7/27/2020 11:44 am : link
How many complexes have multiple football fields? I guess they could try to do regional bubbles, and employ the MLB schedule model, so that NFCE teams only play their division, and the AFCE. Then you spread the schedule out to play Thurs-Mon. That's still only a 10-game schedule, unless you play the opposite division 2x each.
.
GiantEgo : 7/27/2020 11:52 am : link
Trying to plow ahead with a traditional schedule is looking more absurd everyday.

Maybe some type of round-robin type tournament played at a limited number of sites like World Cup Soccer could have been workable.
Very plain and simple
Biteymax22 : 7/27/2020 12:00 pm : link
The league(s) need to accept that prevention isn't 100% possible and there will be outbreaks to certain magnitudes. If they want to have a season the focus needs to be on what to do when these happen rather than believing you can prevent them.
I didn’t hear anyone volunteer to stay away from their family for 4
Ivan15 : 7/27/2020 12:19 pm : link
Months or longer. Two weeks of camp is about all you can expect.

This may work for the NBA but there is no way it will work for MLB or NFL.
Football Island
SCGiantsFan : 7/27/2020 12:30 pm : link
Didn't New Zealand, extend an offer to have the NFL play there? There is your NFL Island.
the only league with a chance to play a full season
Captplanet : 7/27/2020 12:33 pm : link
is the NHL... They are moving all teams to Canada... a country that had Zero Covid deaths yesterday. If any league wants to play, they will have to, at a minimum, move teams out of Florida, texas, arizona and other hot spots.

Unless/until the turnaround on test results is same-day (preferably within a few hours), a major problem is always on the horizon when there is no bubble.

It doesn't really matter how frequently they test if they don't know until Wednesday which players test positive today.
I still think it's up in the air

It s a very contagious virus. Catching it doesn’t have to mean someone was negligent

NFL s best bet is for the continuation of treatment for disease. Heard a doctor on news today state that treatments have begun to make a dent.

Death rates are Now similar to the flu However, he also believes we don’t take the flu seriously enough.

As long as you have idiots saying, “no one’s going to tell me what to do,” it will continue to worsen. I’m not saying anything deep here.

I have had a very hard time processing the behavior of so many. From the anti maskers to the ones who insist that they know more than the professionals and insist on interpreting the data in a manner that allows them to poke holes in said data, even when they really have no idea WTF they are even looking at, they just HAVE to prove to everyone that it's all a lie. That behavior is dangerous. What the fuck is wrong with erring on the side of caution and just wear the damn mask?

I am disgusted with so many people. This country truly needs an enema.
Put a piece of cloth over your mouth & nose.
