Art Stapleton The Record: Just for comparison:

Aldrick Rosas

Chandler Catanzaro
83.8 FG%, 92.9 PAT%

Let's see what the contract for Catanzaro looks like, but can't imagine it's anywhere close to the $3.2M Rosas was going to get + without the off-field uncertainty that lingers

“Finally, I’d heard that Giants owner John Mara was a voice for the football people in these negotiations—which is interesting in that coaches and GMs often feel like they don’t have a voice in these rooms. It makes sense, too, since Mara serves with coaches and GMs on the league’s competition committee. And while we’re there, Reid, as O’Brien alluded to, was a pretty key voice for the coaches, as a sounding board for owners, in the process, too.”

DALLAS
Owning Dallas Morning News: Film room: When ranking the NFC East’s passing offenses, the Cowboys are clearly at the top. Here’s why.

3. New York Giants

“New York’s Daniel Jones and Washington’s Dwayne Haskins are still early in their development as quarterbacks and nowhere near sure things despite the draft capital used to select them.
Both players have been extremely up-and-down during their NFL tenures, and it’s anybody’s guess as to which one will end up being the superior player.
But Jones has the better supporting cast.

While the Giants’ receiving corps isn’t in Dallas’ league, New York does possess a noteworthy wide-out trio: Golden Tate, Sterling Shepard and Darius Slayton. Tate is the wily veteran and a route tree master who can still be effective. Shepard has been one of the better slot receivers since entering the league, and Slayton became the team’s preeminent deep threat, leading the team in yards per reception (15.4) last season.

At tight end, Evan Engram is potent, when healthy. The problem is that he hasn’t been able to stay healthy since entering the league, missing 13 of a potential 32 games over the past two seasons. When healthy, Engram is a true mismatch weapon for the Giants as he’s simply too big for defensive backs in coverage but too fast for linebackers, which is why teams often have to bracket Engram to have success.

The primary playmaker for New York is obviously running back Saquon Barkley, who is one of the freakiest mixes of size (5-11, 207) and athleticism in the NFL. Barkley is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. He’s an excellent option as a receiver out of the backfield and very effective on screens, which are likely to be used more frequently with Jason Garrett as the team’s offensive coordinator. Barkley can even line up outside to run routes from a traditional receiver alignment.
New York has improved its O-line in recent years. The Nate Solder signing was a huge overpay but he’s a definite upgrade over Ereck Flowers. Additionally, right guard Kevin Zeitler proved to be a meaningful addition last year, as he’s been an upper-echelon guard for much of his career. Rookie first-rounder Andrew Thomas should provide a stark improvement at right tackle.”

History

Stuart Football Perspective: Super Bowl Champions and Elite Safeties
http://www.footballperspective.com/super-bowl-champions-and-elite-safeties/

Dan Daly: Still think this is one of the more amazing feats in NFL history: the Bears leading the league in penalties 8 times in 9 seasons from 1941-49. They won 3 titles in that time 1941-43-46), lost another title game ('42) and had *by far* the best record (77-24-3, .755).

Note the Bears had a modest 49 more penalties than 2nd-place Washington but *1,986* more penalty yards. That means they had a ton more 15-yarders -- in keeping with their surly reputation. Also: *3,435* more penalty yards than their opponents.

Dan Daly: Jan Stenerud made 2 of every 3 FG attempts in his NFL career (558-373-66.8%), which ended in 1985, & is deservedly in the HOF. Blows my mind to think that 35 years later, Justin Tucker's career % from *50+* is better than that (55-39-70.9)

Dan Daly: NFL Trivia: I'm the only QB in history to set the record for passing yards in a season and then improve it 2 more times before somebody finally broke it.

Answer: Chargers HOFer Dan Fouts broke the single-season record for passing yardage in 1979, then upped it each of the next 2 seasons. Dan Marino topped him by breaking 5,000 barrier in his great '84 season, and that mark stood for 27 years!

Dan Daly: NFL Trivia Questions: HOFer Sonny Jurgensen was the 1st QB to throw for 3,000 yards in a season with 2 different teams (Eagles twice, Washington 3 times). Who was the 2nd to do it? And who was the 1st to do it with *3* teams?

Answer: The QB Sonny was traded for, Norm Snead, was the 2nd in the NFL to throw for 3,000 yards in a season with 2 different teams -- Washington and the Eagles. The 1st to do it with *3* different teams? Steve DeBerg (49ers, Bucs, Chiefs)

Dan Daly: Late Night NFL Trivia: Whizzer White -- with the 1940 Lions -- was the 1st RB to lead the NFL in rushing for a team other than the one he broke into the league with (1938 Pirates). Who was the 2nd? Hint: Unlike Whizzer, the 2nd one didn't become a Supreme Court justice.

Answer: HOFer Eric Dickerson was the next to do it. After winning 3 #NFL rushing titles with the Rams, he won a 4th with the Colts. He and Whizzer are the only RBs in league history to win a rushing crown with 2 different teams.

3 other RBs have won a rushing title for a team other than the one they broke into the NFL with: Priest Holmes (Ravens, Chiefs), Ricky Williams (Saints, Dolphins) & Curtis Martin (Patriots, Jets). These were the seasons:

Giants Birthdays 7-27

Antoine Bethea FS FA-AZ 2019 NYG 2019 7-27-1984

Emanuel McDaniel LCB/RCB W-MIA 1999 NYG 1999-2001 7-27-1972

NYT: Giants Are N.F.C. East Champions (12-17-2000)

“Although they didn't always look the part, the New York Giants are NFC East champions, with a chance for home-field advantage throughout the conference playoffs.

New York played an inept first half and started the third quarter even worse before getting in gear, scoring the last 17 points in the final 18 minutes.

Kerry Collins threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Amani Toomer, and an interception by Emmanuel McDaniel set up an 8-yard TD run by Tiki Barber as the Giants beat the Dallas Cowboys 17-13 Sunday night.

The Giants (11-4) won for the fourth straight time since coach Jim Fassel guaranteed they were going to the playoffs. This victory sealed their first berth since 1997 and their first division title since then...”

Al Simpson LG D2-Colorado State 1975 NYG 1975-1976 7-27-1951

NYT: Simpson of Giants Learning the Ropes (10-03-1975)

“PLEASANTVILLE, N. Y. Oct. 2—Usually there is not as much pressure on a second‐round draft pick to be exceptional unless he's on a football team that had no first‐round pick. Just ask Al Simpson, the New York Giants rookie offensive tackle out of Colorado State.
“Yeah, I've read some of those things saying I'm a disappointment but I try‐not to pay too much attention to what's put in the papers,” says, Simpson, who turned out to be the Giants top‐draft choice only because the team's first‐round pick was sent to Dallas in mid‐seasdn before the draft in exchange for Craig Morton, a quarterback.
Coach Bill Arnsparger has also heard the rumors that he and his Giants staff are disappointed with Simpson and he says he doesn't know how they got started.
“I'm sure I never said that,” said Arnsparger. “He's just like everyone else. He just has some learning to do. Maybe some people are saying he's a disappointment because they're comparing him with our two top draft choices of the year before, who both turned out well, but at a different position. But I asked Jim [Trimble, the Giants director of pro personnel] to look around the league and see how many first, second or third‐round linemen are starting on other clubs. There aren't many.”

Only six, rookie first‐round selections are starting for anybody in the National Football League this season, none of them offensive linemen. Two second‐round linemen, Burton Lawless, Dallas guard, and Bill Bain, Green Bay tackle, are starting. There are no third‐round picks starting on the lines either. Six first‐round offensive linemen are not starting.
To compare Simpson with the Giants' two top picks of last season, John Hicks and Tom Mullen, is also unfair. Both were all‐league rookie selections at guard, and Hicks was the first offensive lineman to be named United Press International's National Football Conference offensive rookie of the year in 20 years.
Simpson, who attracted a lot of attention from the pro scouts in the East ‐ West Shrine game, came highly recommended. He had switched from defensive tackle to offensive tackle as a sophomore and played there three years. Teaming with Mark Mullaney, the Minnesota Vikings No. 1 choice, on pass blocking he helped Colorado State earn its No. 1 national ranking in pass offense. But it is pass blocking he finds the toughest part of playing in the
“It's a lot different up here than it is in college,” says Simpson. “The defensive linemen are bigger and quicker than in college for one thing and they do a lot more things—like stunting [cross ‐ overs and switches]. The tackle being on the outside doesn't get much help on the wide rushes.”

Simpson says his colleagues along the line are giving him helpful hints now and then, and he's learning a lot. He got a real education on the difficulty of playing the offensive line from the bench on Sunday watching the seasoned defensive linemen of the Washington Redskins conduct a seminar on stunting by sacking the Giants' quarterbacks eight times.
“Yeah,” says Simpson in apparent awe at the Redskins performance against his teammates. “I only got in for a little while in the fourth quarter on the left side, but it was hard to tell by then if I did well or not, although their first defensive unit was still in there.”
The reason it was hard to tell is that by that time the Redskins were on their way to a 49‐13 victory. Simpson won't start Sunday in St. Louts because Arnsparger is trying to rebuild and maintain the confidence in his starting unit by starting everybody who started last week. This does not include Mullen who has a dislocated shoulder.”

In Memoriam

Frank Damiani T UDFA-Manhattan 1944 NYG 1944 Born 7-27-1922 Died 4-28-1998

(11-29-1944)

“The New York Giants have asked waivers on Frank Damiani, rookie tackle from Manhattan, to make room for Al Blozis, former weight throwing champion who has returned from the armed service .. , Blozis, a first string tackle on the United Press' all league team last year, would be eligible for the championship playoff if the Giants should w the Eastern Division title.”

NAMED GRID MENTOR Salem, W. Va. (8-30-1947) “Frank Damiani, 28, former New Tork Giants professional football tackle, has been appointed head football coach of Salem College. Damiani played three years at Manhattan College, and entered the Army Air Force.”

Dick Yelvington RT D23-Georgia 1951 NYG 1952-1957 Born 7-27-1928 Died 2-24-2013

Yelvington was selected by the Giants 23rd round of the 1951 draft. He went to the University of Georgia on a football scholarship but left for a 18 month stint in the US Army and was captain of the 24th corps football team in Korea. He then returned and convinced the Georgia head coach to restore his scholarship to play football at the University of Georgia. At Georgia he lettered as a freshman and was the starting RT from 1949 until 1951.

He had his first opportunity to start as a professional when Tex Coulter an All Pro tackle had to move to center to replace the injured John Rapacz before the Giants first game in 1952 versus the LA Rams. Yelvington a rookie took Coulter's spot at RT. He remained a starter into the 1957 season.

He became part of a strong OL in the mid 1950's with RG Jack Stroud D5 1951 Tennessee, C Ray Wietecha D12 1950 Michigan/Northwestern ; LG Bill Austin D13 1949 Oregon State and LT Rosevelt Brown D27 1953 Morgan State.

In 1956 his downfield blocking helped spring Alex Webster for his third TD of the game from 34 yards as the Giants defeated the Browns 21-9 in Cleveland. When LDT Dick Modzelewski injured his back against the Chicago Cards, Yelvington moved to DT and lined with Andy Robustelli, Rosey Grier, and Walt Yowarsky to hold the great Ollie Matson to 43 yards rushing in a 23-10 win that gave the Giants a undisputed hold on first place in the east.

In 1957 he and Bobby Epps were ejected for fighting in a game against the Chicago Cards. After one of the Cards had put his knee in Frank Gifford's back, the Giants ordered a special "bootsie" or educational play against the offender where no effort is made to advance the ball, but all 11 players pile on the offender. In the midst of all of this one of the Cards made as if he were going to slug Yelvington, the referee grabbed the Cards player as Yelvington landed what was supposed to be his retaliatory punch and the Giant tackle was ejected.

In 1958 Yelvington was traded to the Baltimore Colts and saw his career end there without playing a regular season game.

After retiring from football he became a agent for the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, forerunner of the DEA.
